So someone at the office knowing I'm into guns asked me to take a look at this rust bucket. Apparently it has some sentimental value to someone. It's worth about $8 as it sits and $100 in pristine condition, but love knows no limits.....

I've assembled it and checked it out, it appears that it would be functional if someone gave it some extreme TLC. It needs to be torn apart, blasted the (bleep) out of, coated heavily with Cerakote or similar and reassembled.

What can I tell this person this will cost them? I'm done with it, so the gun would be shipped to someone as shown, the sender has no gun knowledge so they don't want to take it apart or reassmeble it. All work to be done by someone else....including running a brush or ten down the bore to knock the rust out of there too.

$250? $500?

Thanks,
J

And for your viewing pleasure....the rusty rocket.

Feel free to PM, I'm sure I can help you out if need be.
I'd park it then coat over the park. Guns in that condition benefit greatly from that treatment.

I just did one like that for a friend that had a tractor battery tip over on it. Actually the one I did looked quite a bit worse. It turned out great after blasting and cerakoting.

I'd give you a price but then I would have to take a vacation (LL Style)

It shouldn't cost you much more than it would to cerakote it though.

$250....... Its gonna take some work to get that thing in decent shape.

You may actually have to do some sanding before even blasting to try to get the surface even. be a tough call as it looks like some of its pretty close to the stampings.

If the bore is as rusty as the outside- I wonder if it is still safe to shoot?

Would be a good candidate to soak in an electro-tank, see what's left when it get's out.

I bet a guy could swap the old barrel out with a decent one cheaper than it would cost to try to salvage it.

Jason -

I'd like to have my grandpa's 30-06 remington game master redone too, and this thread has really piqued my interest. Let me know what you end up with, eh?

Best,
JP

I gunkote pumps and semis for $150. That includes blasting bare, k-phos and one color on all metal parts except springs, fire control parts and small internals. I'd charge an extra $100/minimum for this one. I'm betting some of the small screws and internals need replacement.

I have done guns nearly that bad. I hit with sandpaper then blasted them with a-oxide. Did the finish with Brownells teflon-moly. Economical and the black finish does a good job of hiding pits.
