Most people will tell you that if the barrel says .308, you're safe to shoot 7.62 NATO and commercial .308. On DPMS' forum, one of DPMS' "technicial specialist" said the exact opposite. The forum is down right now, it's in one of the FAQ threads on their forum.

Thank you
It is strange that there is so much conflicting info???
Mine is an LR .308
So stay with .308??

Re: What do you shoot .308 or 7.62 in dpms??

You'll have better luck with 308 ammo anyway, the DPMS 1-10 twist prefer 168-180gr pills so if you want accuracy stick with those. For plinking I've used 7.62 NATO without issues though but accuracy really isn't there

Jesus dude, it doesn't fucking matter. Just go out and shoot the damn gun!

Re: What do you shoot .308 or 7.62 in dpms??

When I had my LR308, the barrel was marked .308. I shot both .308 and 7.62 NATO rounds with no problems whatsoever. Some will argue that they're the same, some will say otherwise. If it'll make you feel better, shoot whatever it says on the bottom of your barrel.

I had better luck with 175gr FGMM and Black Hills.

Re: What do you shoot .308 or 7.62 in dpms??

.308 are specd to run at a slightly higher pressure than 7.62x51, something like 62,000psi vs 51,000psi. If the barrel is marked .308, you should be just fine to shoot either is the general consensus.

My Noveske N6 is marked 7.62x51, and I shoot the shit out of .308. As a matter of fact that is all I shoot (that's a lie, I have a few battle packs of 7.62x51 in the safe). Any reputable manufacturer's barrel should be able to handle either.
You won't find "NATO" .308 ammo as far as I know (I am far from an expert) you will find NATO 7.62x51, or reloads of .308 that use old NATO brass.

I think if your just plinking at steel or paper, or stocking up for the zombie apocalypse then the cheaper bulk 7.62x51 is fine just be prepared to clean it a little more often (I have found it to be dirtier regardless of manufacturer). If your looking for accuracy, and consistency look at FGMM (federal gold medal match in 168gr or 175gr, or something similar from someone like Southwest Ammo who is competitive in pricing, and quality from what I have heard around here. I am far from an expert on these subjects, but I hope I have helped.

Re: What do you shoot .308 or 7.62 in dpms??

Just to reiterate the previous posters: It's considered safe to fire 7.62 NATO from .308 WIN chambered firearms, but discouraged when firing .308 WIN from 7.62 NATO chambers. In addition to the pressure ratings, the 7.62 NATO chamber is spec'd a hair larger to ensure proper weapon function when operating in dirty environments or at full-auto. Every chamber and cartridge has small variances that still fall within the required tolerances, so the idea is that if you were to put a smaller variance .308 cartridge into a larger variance 7.62 chamber you could possibly have excessive headspace issues which would lead to excessive pressure, i.e your gun blows up. In real life however, the odds of that happening are slim and I'm sure many a .308 cartridge has been fired from a 7.62 chamber without any ill effect, although the practice is discouraged.

.308 in my SASS.
Federal Gold Medal Match 175gr to be exact.

Used to shoot 168gr until I tried the 175s. At distance (+500) there is a noticeable difference.

However, you can't got wrong with either weight.
