Worthless cops once again

“”Have we discussed the part where the suspect in this murder is the suspect in an incident a few weeks earlier where he raped and tortured a woman in front of her boyfriend before cutting her throat and trying to burn them both alive? They managed to survive the fire and escape. The suspect took the victim's phone and was using it, giving police an easy opportunity to track him. Instead, he ended up murdering another woman.””

"Building False Hope", business is booming

There have been 3 - 4 recessions during my lifetime. As each recession took hold and reality set in, there have always been more and more articles that build false home in those those struggling. I am seeing more and more of these "come on's". They paint a picture of an easy way out of debt or how to make more money now that a person has been laid off. They are simply selling snake oil to American's who can't afford to spend their last dime on a scam.

Here is one of those "articles of hope".. There will be many more as things worsen.

Is my scope broken?

IMG_20230929_112941899.jpg

So I dusted this scope off and put it on a db10 (large frame AR)

I've been trying to find ammunition that it likes, and shrinking my group sizes by improving my fundamentals.

I haven't gotten better than about two moa and this rifle should be able to do much better.

I did all that range work on 15x, I was just playing around with the rifle doing some dry firing on the lowest power 3x and noticed this black semicircle in the bottom of my scope.

I tried looking through the eyepiece at different angles thinking maybe my alignment was off or something but with my eye and my cell phone I can't seem to find a solution.

I did the best I could with my pictures so you can sort of see it, and then there is another picture on 15x where you can see that the scope is clear as it should be.

Should I send this scope into vortex or am I such a dumbass that I'm doing something wrong?

I don't have a rifle that shoots well enough to really test this scope, because I can't get the ammo that my other rifle really likes anymore...

Thank you in advance.

Shooting .22 PRS etc..in the rain

I am debating going in a PRS event this weekend. However, it is showing rain all weekend long. Wondering who has shot in the rain and did the weather result in any damage to your gear or equipment?

I know in a centrefire water in the barrel wouldn't be as much of a concern as my thoughts would tha tthe gas would blow out of vaporize any water that ended up it barrel. However, not sure that would be the case with a .22, being there is such a small powder charge and a minimal gas cloud ahead of the bullet.

Pls advise.

Mildot in use

Ok coming from ar15 with T1 red dot only this is my first time with a mildot scope(christmas tree). I have been searching around for how to use the mildot system and in my search I just end up with a bunch of scattered informations.

So in an attempt to gather my info and put it down for practical use I divided up my search results in a chronological way. But I could need some help from guys in here to verify if I truly understand this miliradian system or if Im way off.

Pretending Im in the field here it goes..

Step 1, The back ground understanding

(Mil dot coverage @ a given distance)
Formula
Mil x Distance in m = mm Coverage @ Distance in m

Example
0.37 Mil x 351 m = 130 mm Coverage @ Distance in m

STEP 2, estimating range to target
Formula
Target in mm / Mil = Distance in m away

Example
4000mm / 7.3 mil = 548 m away

STEP 3 , mil hold for bullet frop @ distance
Formula
Bullet drop in mm / Distance in m = Mil hold

Example
2280 mm drop / 548 m = 4.16 Mil hold

The 2280 mm bullet drop @ 548 m is something I got from the back of a 308 ammo package.

Feinstein DEAD.....

Read it and weep??? Hope this isn' the beginning of the worst yet to come.

New McMillan smear stock review!

As we all know, last weekend McMillan officially sold the first M40A1 HTG smear stocks in almost 40 years! This is pretty remarkable, since Kelly McMillan had refused to make any replicas of the old smear stocks and that the very early dyes used from 1974 to 1976 was no longer available. Original USMC M40A1 smear stocks have become a "grail" items for collectors and clone builders, but this demand has caused prices to surpass $5,000 per stock on occasion! Due to the rarity and exorbitant cost of original USMC smear stocks, most enthusiasts never had a chance to acquire one...... until now!

McMillan just released 4 USMC pattern M40A1 HTG stocks for sale, and they plan on releasing more of them over the coming weeks/months. Even though these aren't USMC used stocks, they're still factory original smear stocks that capture the beauty and essence of the originals! For just under $1k collectors will receive a fully configured HTG stock, complete with:
  • Inletting for Remington 700 short action receivers
  • Inletting for the modified Winchester M70 bottom metal and trigger guard
  • Aluminum pillars in the inletting
  • Heavy sniper fill fiberglass
  • Front and rear Wichita sling swivels
  • Embedded steel inserts for the sling swivels
  • Brown basket weave Pachmayr recoil pad
  • Unique smear camouflage pattern
These features alone are phenomenal, but there's much more to be factored in, such as the time, effort, R&D and everything else that went into producing these stocks. New dyes had to be mixed, experimenting had to be done, original stocks and camo patterns had to be researched and analyzed, production time had to be assigned, etc., etc., etc. And they're a limited edition run that may not ever be made again! And there was free shipping included! So, in my personal opinion, the $932 price is beyond justified (and easily far less than what they could potentially sell for on the secondary market), and these new smear stocks are worth every penny! Seriously, a MASSIVE ampunt of work has gone into this project and it is a complete success!

You're probably wondering how these new smear stocks stack up against the originals from decades ago, so here's some photos! The new stocks are the 3rd and 4th ones down (1 new stock is mine, the other belongs to a friend).

20230928_184507.jpg

20230928_184706.jpg

As you can see, these new smear stocks look absolutely phenomenal and they fit right in with this small selection of original USMC used stocks. There are many, many smear patterns, and I'm sure that the new stocks are based on an existing pattern. It will be interesting to see the other new stocks that are released, and what patterns those will be!

The new stocks are almost identical to the old ones, but there are a few differences. The new stocks are slightly more matte in appearance, vs some of the old stocks with a more shiny gel coat. I also think that the new stocks are better made, and the seams between the two sides of the stock are almost nonexistent. The new stocks are just flat out better built, great care went into making them (even though it's possible to have some extremely slight flaws or scratches, like the originals).

Here's the new smear stocks alongside a NOS smear stock from the late 1970's/early 1980's:

20230928_185036.jpg

20230928_185107.jpg

It's pretty awesome to see original McMillan smear stocks from different decades side-by-side! Just by looking at these stocks you can see how the manufacturing process has changed and evolved over the years. The middle stock was made prior to 1983, because that's when McMillan got their first CNC machines to do factory inletting. The very first smear stocks had to be completely inletted by the USMC 2112 armorers at the RTE shop, but we now have the luxury of having it done for us at the factory. The middle stock also has a layer of gray material (atomized aluminum particles and glass fibers mixed into an epoxy matrix) that seals the barrel channel and receiver area of the stock. McMillan stopped doing this long ago, so the new smear stocks have their current style of exposed fiberglass.

I also tried to fit some original USMC modified Winchester M70 bottom metal and trigger guards to the new smear stocks and this is what it looks like:

20230928_202039.jpg

20230928_202112.jpg

A perfect fit! Everything lines up, but they're a little loose, which is due to the meral pieces not being bedded into place. So, the inletting is exactly what's needed for these stocks, and you'll have absolutely no issues with fitting them for new bottom metal and trigger guards.

These new stocks are pretty much perfect, McMillan even drilled a small area out of the center support material so that an escutcheon can be fit in the proper location! Look at these 2 photos and you'll see the semicircular cut in the center of the left stock. The right stock has this cut and it can clearly be seen from the top of the stock, but it doesn't go all the way through at the bottom (it's easy to remove a millimeter of material!). Notice how the original USMC modified Winchester M70 trigger guard's front screw hole is right over this drilled area (again, the right stock just needs a tiny bit more material removed, but they did drill it). Any gunsmith should be able to git an escutcheon to the stock and McMillan provided them with a nice cutout to show them the proper location for the escutcheon. I never expected McMillan to actually add an escutcheon themselves, since they never did that modification on the original USMC stocks, that work was done by the 2112 armorers.

20230928_202246.jpg

20230928_202205.jpg

That's pretty much everything that I can think to include in this review of McMillan's new M40A1 HTG smear stocks. I think that they absolutely knocked it out of the park with these stocks and I can't thank them enough for tackling this massive (and long awaited) project! These stocks are phenomenal, the smear pattern is exceptional, and they are true to the original USMC used smear stocks from decades ago.

I honestly can't think of a better way for McMillan to celebrate their 50th anniversary, than with a limited edition reproduction of their most famous and revered stock! Their HTG stock was a key feature in upgrading the Marine's M40 "hunting rifles" to a truly rugged and damn near indestructible M40A1 sniper rifle! The Marines loved these stocks so much that they spent the next 4 decades buying stocks from McMillan! From the 1970's M40A1 to the 2010's M40A5 and all the M14's in between, McMillan has had an enormous impact on Marine Scout Snipers and shooting team members. It's one of the most successful partnerships the Corps has had with a company, and it all started with some weird looking smear stocks!

I can't thank McMillan enough for making these stocks and giving us the chance to buy an M40A1 HTG smear stock directory from the factory. This is truly a unique opportunity for veterans, collectors and clone builders alike, and I can't wait to see the rifle builds and enjoyment that these smear stocks will bring to this community!

Happy 50th, McMillan, and Semper Fi!

Interesting read on the effects of the internet and social media on the mind and emotions.

I've been pondering this for a bit now. It's programing and not for your benefit.

Somebody ought to pass a law..............

Philosophy professor Zachary Irving says allowing our minds to wander could help make social media less toxic.

Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on LinkedIn Share via Email
We know from experience that digital technologies such as social media make us more distracted. But University of Virginia researcher Zachary Irving says they’ve also changed how we’re distracted.
“Our minds used to wander during idle times, like riding a bus or walking,” said Irving, an assistant professor of philosophy. “Digital distractions are instead designed to leave us ‘stuck’ on a salient topic.”
What might have resulted in creative thought is instead replaced by things like moral outrage or “doomscrolling.”
Irving on Tuesday received a $75,000 fellowship grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Dangers and Opportunities of Technology section to research a book that, he hopes, will offer a path toward mitigating the toxicity.
He’s also teaching a graduate seminar this fall on the topic.
He spoke to UVA Today about the problem of digital distraction. He said he thinks the solution lies in tapping human spontaneity, a state of mind that’s integral to creativity and the brain’s on-off switch.

Why We Get Stuck in a Loop

Irving’s project is titled “The Spontaneity Deficit: Good Minds in the Age of Distraction.” He views tech as useful, but often antithetical to a meandering mental state, which he says the brain needs for healthy balance.
“Notifications, emails, Twitter posts, YouTube recommendations, Google Ads, texts, Slack messages, Venmo requests – such technologies are designed to place historically unprecedented demands on attention,” Irving said.
Social media environments in particular – and the algorithms that drive them – are designed to maximize user engagement. Irving argues that the algorithms accomplish this by fostering a kind of “sticky” attention that his previous work links to anxiety and other mental health disorders.
“Right now companies have ‘your brain on drugs’ versions of social media,” Irving said. “And nobody wants that when the drug just gives you an anxiety disorder. Like, that’s a bad drug.”
Irving said he dates the strong “eyes on app” mentality back to 2016 with YouTube’s and then Facebook’s algorithmic tweaks, both of which sought to increase screen time based on individual online activity.
The new customized recommendations doubled the amount of time adults spent on YouTube, compared to 2015, for example. They also resulted in headlines such this one from The New York Times: “Facebook Has 50 Minutes of Your Time Each Day. It Wants More.”
The apps were doing a better job of getting inside our heads, but that came with a cost.
“There are studies that show rates of moral outrage are much higher and that digital distractions can induce smartphone-related anxiety,” Irving said.

Why More Spontaneity May Help

Irving is the author of a theory on creativity called “the shower effect.” It states that we sometimes get our most creative thoughts while performing tasks that require fewer mental demands, such as showering or going for a walk.
Spontaneity in particular reflects both state of mind and its byproducts. Think jazz music or improvisational comedy. When a task doesn’t require a linear solution, or when there’s no task at all, the mind likes to riff, he said.

Hey, look at this! A UVA researcher says he may have discovered a secret to counteract how digital distractions sometimes seize control of our brains. (Illustration by Alexandra Angelich, University Communications)

UVA philosopher Zachary Irving has been named a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow and will write a book that’s meant to be prescriptive for solving the digital distraction problem. (Photo by Erin Edgerton, University Communications)
“There’s evidence in the literature that our wandering thoughts are often about sort of standing goals that we have,” he said. “But mind-wandering also makes you more likely to think about something that seems irrelevant to your problem, like some weird idea that you otherwise would ignore, that just pops into your head. That’s one of the processes that supports creativity.”
His latest theory is that being engrossed in social media creates a “spontaneity deficit.” That’s because sticky thought is incompatible with spontaneity: when your mind wanders from one topic to another, you can’t be stuck on a single thing.
“Spontaneity is associated with positive affect,” he said. “On the whole, people tend to be slightly less happy when they’re distracted, rather than when they’re on task. But the opposite happens when you look at spontaneity. When you’re distracted and your thoughts are freely moving and they’re spontaneous, you have positive mood and you’re energized. And being happy is something that people want.”
Irving’s book will review the current body of related research, including his own, then make suggestions for a revised business model for social media companies and other digital providers.
The project dovetails with a UVA Grand Challenge to match digital technology with improved youth mental health. The Grand Challenges Research Investments support UVA’s 2030 Plan, which aims to match areas of academic expertise with real-world problems in the commonwealth and beyond.
The stakes are high, Irving said. Without spontaneity, you might not be able to pivot when a major life problem comes your way.
“There are reasons that your brain evolved to have time to spend in spontaneous thought, and it’s because it counteracts this problem of getting stuck in a loop,” he said. “If you reduce spontaneity, you risk having an overly calcified perspective.”
He thinks that knowledge can even be marketable.
“If a company could make you feel more like, ‘Hey, this is my normal brain; this is what I feel like after I go for a walk,’ then that social media company might do very well,” he said. “People want to be happy and spontaneous and exploratory. If you give them a way to do that, while they’re still getting the enjoyment of using social media, they will thank you.”

Good Red Dot for Lever Gun?

I saw the other recent thread about red dots on pistols, but I'm thinking of getting one for a novelty lever action I'm putting together. Purpose is literally just for a fun toy. I won't be hunting or carrying it for any real purpose. It's one of those silly modern lever gun builds on a Marlin 1895 Trapper in 45-70. Max range will be 300 yards, if that. So I don't need a scope. Maybe I'll a magnifier on at some point, but not any time soon.

I've looked at a ton of options online and my initial short list is Aimpoint Acro P2, T2 Micro (I used to have one on an AR years ago), Holosun 510 or 512, or maybe Trijicon RMR 2, HD, or SRO. But I think those Trijicons are mostly intended for pistols. I'm also a bit concerned with putting something like this on a 45-70. So it needs to be a robust piece of gear.

Any suggestions on best dot size? I don't want a huge unit sitting on top of the rifle. But I also want a generously sized sighting window. The Acro seems like it has a small window with a lot of the surrounding housing visiable. T2 is tried and tested but it is more of a "tube" than something like the RMR 2 that has a frame that might "disappear" better? Holosuns seem pretty good, actually.

What are the chances?

I've been thinking a lot about what's going to happen over the next 1.5 years. This, while trying to ensure my Tin Foil Hat isn't on too tight. :D But I wanted to try and consider what I think might be the "worst case scenario" for the country, in order to prepare for it.

That "worst case" scenario (in general) being that Biden (or equivalent demo-rat) is "elected" in 2024. I say elected in quotes, because I have a feeling that the only way they can be elected again is if the "fraud machine" is still as strong as it was in 2020, if not stronger. And, I think it may very well be. I don't think we've done enough to police up the state election commissions, the vote counting systems, and to ensure fair and legal elections. And, TBH, I blame the Republicans (well the "establishment RINO swamp rats) primarily. They could be pushing for much more election reform, but they aren't. They could be fighting to install voter ID requirements, but aren't. Frustrating! Furthermore, in the case of Donald Trump, the weaponized justice system prevails in keeping him off the ballot.

I also think that we as Republican voters need to do a whole lot more, but we aren't,, We meed to do a much better job at fighting "fire with fire." We need to take advantage of everything the dems do. Job One: Get all registered republicans out to vote, by any means necessary. It infuriates me to hear about precincts where registered republicans totally outnumber the dems in that precinct, but a dem won because the Republican voters just didn't turn out to vote, thinking things like, "My vote won't count," or "My guy won't win..." BS! All votes count! We need to get our fellow voters out to the polls. And, where legal, we also need to do things like "ballot harvesting" the same way the dems do "Legal" ballot harvesting of legal ballots, but harvesting, nonetheless.

Also, we need to change the mindset of republican voters. I know that it's a matter of pride for most of us to vote on election day itself. I did it for many years and took that same pride. But I do think it makes sense, now, for those who can "vote early" to do so, before Election Day. The logic being, if everybody floods the polls on Election day, bad things can happen. Voting machines can beak down. Snow storms can cause power interruptions. So can floods in the polling places. All of those different things dems use to stop voting (and/or vote counting) at a given polling place and block republicans from voting. If we can get those votes in early, we can avoid those "last day" problems and we should know what we need to finish up on Election day. Trust me, it's what the dems do. Like I say, fight "fire with fire..." but legally.

All that said, assuming we do all of those things, and assuming by some magical happenstance, the Republican nominee (whoever that may be) is elected and certified by the Electoral College, what's to stop Biden from simply ignoring those results and keep himself 'in office" after 01/20/2025? This by declaring "martial law" and engaging the Military to keep him there and keep the GOP president elect out! Far fetched? It would seem that way, but look at all the lengths they are going to in the judiciary and LE to keep Pres. Trump off the ballot by criminal indictments. If they can weaponize the justice system and Federal/State LE, they can surely weaponize the Military to keep Biden in power. But, should Trump (or whichever GOP nominee) actually be elected, will Biden honor that and leave the office, or will he try to stay there by hook or by crook?

Thoughts? What are the chances?
