Rookie looking for opinion on my first bolt action gun

Hi,

I don't know what to buy as my first bolt action gun...I want my gun (6.5 creedmoor) to shoot reasonably accurately and to reach 1200 meters...that's the longest shooting range in my country. But the problem is, almost nothing is in stock in my country... it's hard to get something good...

So guns in stock are:

- Bergara b14 wilderness terrain (24 inch) for 1300eur
- Sako S20 for around 2200eur
- Sig sauer cross born and raised (stainless steel 24 inch contour barrel...) for around 2200eur
- Savage 110 elite precision 26 inch but it is 3200eur = 3500 USD so I think it is overpriced)
- tikka t3x CTR for about 1800eur

In looks I like the sig sauer the most, but I couldn't find any reviews, videos, or comparisons. So I don't know how it shoots compared to other guns.
Bergara is I think the most bang for the buck but I fear how it shoots on 1500 yards for example.

any suggestions on what to buy?

Thanks!

SOLD Gothic Serpent Colt 723

sold This is a type copy of the Colt 723 as used by SFOD-D in Operation Gothic Serpent, and as portrayed in the movie "Blackhawk Down". This gun uses a Colt Carbine Lower with all Colt fire controls and parts. It is a large pin lower and comes with the spacer. The upper is all Colt A1 with a Colt bolt carrier group. The barrel is pinned and welded at 16" and is aftermarket, as is the front sight. The paint scheme is as portrayed in "Blackhawk Down" and as the "Hero Rifle" in Larry Vickers' book, "Ar-15 Part 1". The gun is equipped with a near mint and fully operational Aimpoint 3000 as discussed in Vickers' book as the sight used by SFOD-D. The Aimpoint has a rare factory detachable polarizing filter that can be adjusted for any light condition. The gun is also equipped with an original SureFire 6p light with red flip-up filter and pressure switch. The light has been modified with a pressure switch in the same way as those used by Delta. The pressure switch was custom fitted by Delta armorers as there was no commercial model available. This light has been similarly modified with a one-off custom fitted pressure switch and sealed with RDX, like the Delta models. Since this is a rare $400 flashlight, I have included the original parts and the light can be returned to its original condition, if so desired. Two original Colt magazines are included and have been taped together in the method used by Delta during the operation. This gun is not just a showpiece, but a gun that is fully combat ready...you can bet your life on it. This gun is guaranteed by myself and can be returned FOR ANY REASON, within one week, for a full refund, less shipping. I have never had a rifle returned. This gun will be going up for auction tonight on GunBroker, but I am offering it early for Hide members for a price of $2500 shipped to your FFL. I expect the gun to go for $3k. Once the gun receives a bid it must be purchased thru Gunbroker. By buying from me thru the hide you don't pay tax and I don't pay commission...win/win. Watch a function test of the gun firing four different brands of ammunition, without a hitch, below. The video was taken in one go...not multiple takes or edits.

Old Member Back

Well been probably a decade or so since I was here. My old user name was Zebra 644. To give you an indication the Viper Skins for the AICS was just coming out and MEGA 10 was hottest in the semi auto .308 platform.

I learned a lot from the guys here and at that time I had a Armalite Super SASS and a Remington 700 in a AICS chassis think I bought the chassis from Mile High?

Had a lot of things happen since then. I am still a LEO but I was hit by a car on a traffic stop so no more SWAT after that can’t run like I used to best run time is a 3 mile run in 36 minutes on the treadmill mill now twice a week. So I sold off all my equipment and well after the times have changed I think I’m about to get back into the 308 game. I’m looking at more recreational style 2-500 yard and just to have a decent bolt gun just incase.

I wanted to see what the general consensus is with the Bergara B-14 HMR specifically the wilderness with the spiraled bolt and muzzle break. I don't like the Sig Cross and I’m iffy with the Ruger Precision. The You Tube gun guys say a lot of positive about the B-14 HMR. I can not justify a 300 win mag as I’ll probably never ever shoot the distance and I don’t reload. The plan is to use decent equipment such as an atlas bipod, a FFP Vortex or the likes a good mount and rings.

A custom rifle starts with a custom barrel

I'm going deep into building a big budget custom .22 LR rifle. I want to compete in .22 LR venues. My philosophy is always to build the rifle around the barrel, then the action, then everything else.

Disclaimer: I own a .22 magnum with a Lilja "match" barrel. It shoot's lights out at 50 yards. That makes me somewhat biased but not so much to stop looking for the best of the best.

So, I started looking at Olympic rifle data in .22 LR. If anyone knows about .22 LR barrels it's the Olympic guys. We're talking about bragging rights, not just for an individual, but for a whole freaking country...

So, I went looking for the most recent data I could find for barrels used in the Olympics. There were only three rifle manufacturers in the last Olympics. Anschutz was kind of a distant 3rd, and one rifle stood out.

Here are the links:

Shooting-Zhang sets rifle 3P world record, Quiquampoix wins rapid gold

China won the 3P in 2021. Zhang broke a record for the 3P (Positions) 50 meter event. But, he did this with a Swiss made rifle made by Bleiker, a $10,000 rifle. Look at the brand name on the rifle's action here:
https://www.reuters.com/world/china...tle-defence-25m-rapid-fire-pistol-2021-08-02/

And the barrel? "All Bleiker rifles use Lilja Precision Rifle Barrels that are made in Montana": - go down the article to the Bleiker Challenger II heading
https://gundigest.com/article/oddball-rimfire-rifles

I'm definitely letting that sink in a bit...

The Bullet Garden

Stephen Hunter's latest. Another chapter in the life of Earl Swagger.

I thought it was well done, and tells a new part of the story. Fits somewhere between the events of G-man and Hot Springs.

His writing appeals to me because he rarely makes a firearms mistake. Also, I really like how he vaguely refers to real people, like he did with the "helpers" in Pale Horse Coming, although he does that in lots of his books.

Can't get good eye relief prone on LPVO

I'm new to LPVOs and decided to get a premium one for my first. I have a Razor Gen III 1-10X LPVO mounted on a Badger C1 1.7". I'm on the shorter side so my AR has a 11.5-12" LOP. I can just barely squeeze two fingers between the stock and my arm if I make a L shape with my arm while holding up my rifle to guess my LOP. Any further out and the rifle gets too unwieldy to hold up.

With that LOP I simply cannot get any sight picture even at 1x while prone. I'm just way too close when prone. I have the scope all the way forward in the rings and the mount itself is as far it can go. It's a little far away when I'm standing upright, but workable.

The obvious solution is to extend the stock while prone. However, Ideally I'd have a rifle that I can shoot standing and prone without adjusting the stock as this is meant to be my self defense rifle. I have a few questions:
  1. Would I be able to get a better sight picture up close with another LPVO?
    1. I was originally weighing in between the Razor and ATACR, but thought I could save $800 on something that seemed up to par.
  2. Did I basically discover LPVOs don't work with my body profile?
  3. Is there something else I could try to make this setup work?
Here is what it looks like mounted, for any interested:

Safe clean outs - what when why?

Been buying guns for 10 years or so but I really turned up the hobby a good bit 4-5 years ago when I bought some land I could shoot on.

Started building ARs, reloading, then got into the less mainstream cartridges like most of us do. 6BR, BRA, 22BR, grendel varieties, etc.

Did a big inventory reduction last year to take me down to 223, 308, 243, 6.5CM, 22CM, 38, 357, 9mm, 45, 22lr, and 17hmr. Reloading for all the centerfires.

Still it just feels like too much.

Part of me things I'd be happy if I could start over with a 10.5, and 18" AR in 223, my 223 and 6.5 bolt guns, a couple Glocks and my rimfires.

Honestly I think the threat of TEOTWAWKI bartering abilities is the only thing holding me back at this point. Oh and dedicated silencers that'd be left homeless.

Curious to hear the hindsight perspective of those who've thinned the heard. Are you happier with less? Anything you miss or regret?

2A to be Eliminated in OR Soon

No 2A OR

As expected, the clearly unconstitutional HB 2005, with the -11 amendment passed out of the Ways and Means Committee today on a party line vote. (Even the lawyer who wrote the bill told the committee that it’s likely much of the bill is unconstitutional.)
The bill will NOT be considered by a senate committee, something that was pointed out by Republicans on Ways and Means. So the Senate will not get to consider the policies in the bill, though they still will be voting on it.
This bill bans young adults from possessing modern firearms and prohibits licensed concealed carry in as-of-yet undefined areas across the state.
The bill will also effectively turn all AR-15 rifles into contraband. There are no exceptions for previously owned rifles or law enforcement.
This is because of the new definition of “receiver” that was crafted by the drafter of the bill. And here it is:
Receiver” means the part of a rifle, shotgun or projectile weapon other than a handgun, or a variant of a rifle, shotgun or projectile weapon other than a handgun, that provides housing or a structure for the primary component designed to block or seal the breech prior to initiation of the firing sequence, even if pins or other attachments are required to connect the component to the housing or structure.
While this is an attempt to copy the more recent federal definition, it does not recognize any exceptions. And obviously, this is NOT a description of an AR-15 lower, which has always been the regulated part.
Under this definition, previously unregulated uppers will be required to have serial numbers. It’s not clear how the many thousands of these rifles currently in the possession of Oregonians can comply.
Given that many distributors have stopped shipping magazines to Oregon because of their fears of Mz 114, it’s hard to imagine that any will continue to ship AR’s or AR uppers to Oregon once this becomes law.
This issue was briefly mentioned in the committee by House Rep Rick Lewis and was promptly ignored.
We do NOT recommend you watch this hearing when the video recording is uploaded. You will lose what little faith you have in humanity. But we can point out some low lights.
Anti-gun activist Sara Gelser noted how happy she was when “they” (meaning her daughter) was unarmed while being robbed at gun point. (Not a misprint.)
She also noted that people under 21 who were involved in mass shootings are not mentally ill, just not properly developed. And therefore they lack the maturity to own modern firearms. Senator Findley pointed out the apparent incongruity for Gelser’s strong support for children’s rights to have sex changes without their parent’s consent. For that decision, apparently, 15 year olds are well equipped.
Senator Lew Fredrick emotionally decried that deaths of so many of the kids in his inner city district and the funerals he had to attend, somehow neglecting to mention that the kids who were being killed in his district were being killed by kids in his district. A peculiar oversight.
More disturbing, but not surprising, was his comments about not wanting to hear about the “constitution,” that pesky document he took an oath to uphold.
The implications of this bill are staggering. It’s unknown how it will be enforced or how gun owners and dealers will deal with the new regulations which clearly the people who wrote the bill do not understand.
What is clear is this. If the Republicans are on the floor when this bill is voted on in either house, they will have effectively voted “yes” simply by being there and all the comments and remonstrances against the bill will be pointless fluff.
Thousands and thousands of Oregonians are going to lose basic rights under this insanity. The Republicans can stop it.
Remind them of that fact.
Senate Republican Leader Tim Knopp
House Republican Leader Vikki Breese Iverson
Also moving forward SB 348 It includes Hi cap mag bans retroactively. Illegal and unconstitutional. Ex Post Facto
What is clear is, is that along with all the other elements of these bills, anyone with any firearm’s magazine will be subject to arrest after it becomes law. And despite the incorrect information given today by the committee counsel, under SB 348, if you are charged with possession of a magazine, you have no right to the presumption of innocence. The “affirmative defense” mentioned in the bill means it will be up to you to prove you’re not guilty. And by the way, that’s impossible. No photograph or receipt means a damn thing for devices that all look alike and have no serial numbers.
