What am i doing wrong ?

Rifle is a DPMS upper
Bushmaster lower
BA barrel- 16.25 inch
Aero parts kit
Rise trigger.
Brand new strike Eagle 1-6.

Yes a franken rifle . Getting this mishmash of parts running was what brought me here and she runs well.
So not a precision rifle - more of a DMR (don’t t really like the term, or maybe not exactly sure what it encompasses)
Accuracy load is Hornady brass
CCI primers . And the best node seems to be right around 43-43.5 Varget.
Projectile is currently 168 match monsters or whatever such MidSouth called their bull pack- made by Nosler i believe

This rifle has surprised me with its accuracy for a franken gas gun.

So I’ve shot this rifle a lot this winter and maybe I’m expecting to much

22B552C6-6BA1-4B08-9D6E-9AD529421828.jpeg
The first target - and these are not necessarily cherry picked but fairly representative of what I get with this load
First target is 43.3 Varget - yes only 3 shot group for this one as the first 2 with this ladder were my spotters . But 3 into .625 and the first shot is the low flyer .

Second target is a 5 shot group for all you purists . 43.5 Varget. First round is again the flyer and about the same amount high this time .

100 yard range - bench with bipod and rear bag. Trying to use all the skills I e learned here and through regular trigger time .
Is what I’m seeing on target just what I can expect from this gasser of none premium top shelf parts ?

Is the 1-6 or maybe because it’s a dreaded and derided Vortex ?

Or is there a know formula/ problem that causes first round flyers ? A possible mechanical problem with the rifle ?

A structural problem with my technique.
I’ve not noticed this phenomenon with my other gas guns or with bolt guns . But I have made this rifle my do everything sorta deer bear boar target rifle and been working on shooting it well all winter .

This is a new optic- a direct replacement for the same that stopped working correctly.it was the older gen 1 and they replaced it with a gen 3 . Before the vortex glass this rifle at first wore an older Nikon monarch of higher magnification and I often noticed this first round flyer but didn’t have the knowledge to really see anything wrong with it 3-4 years ago.

The Unofficially Official Sub-Caliber/“Micro Bore” thread!

Thought this might be a fun topic I don’t often see discussed here, but how about a thread dedicated to sub-caliber (anything below .22) rifles?

I recently got bit by the .17 bug, and would honestly love a .20 as well though that may be awhile yet. I have a .17 Fireball and will be picking up a .17 Ackley Bee next week, but anything sub-cal would belong here no matter how obscure. Calhoon stuff, Ackley stuff, .10s, .12s, .14s, .17s, 19s, .20s bring it all!

To start, since I’m pretty new to this stuff, I’m powder shopping for my two. I realize the .17AB and .17FB are both relatively close-ish in performance, but the prices were right so I pounced. I was initially hoping for a .17 Hornet and a Fireball, but holy hell the going prices for anything Hornet are crazy these days! About the only rifles in mass production for it would be the Savage 25, which gets mixed reviews and sells for way too much for what it is IMO. Ruger and CZ are both put of the Hornet game, and both of them sell for STOOPID money most of the time. I still want one, but it may be awhile…

So anyway, the Ackley Bee will have to do in it’s stead. If anyone else is shooting these, I’m open to powder suggestions. Benchmark and 8208 both come recommended, but are both hard to find and expensive when you can find them. I’d prefer something relatively temp sensitive and less expensive, but that combo may be a unicorn right now. TAC, CFE-BLK, H335, and VV N120/130 are less expensive options that seem to get good reviews as well, so I may order a pound of each in a bit and start load development to see what I can get.

So, what’s everyone else shooting, if anything? :)

Sidearms & Scatterguns Best Custom Open and Limited guns

I am going to start shooting steel challenge and production class and am already looking ahead and think about shooting limited and posible open at some point...I think open may be a bit much for me right now but you never know. I would like to hear from guys that are or have shot in these divisions and advise on who are some of the best builders for open and limited.

And lets just pretend money is not an issue....I've been looking for a few months now and seems from about $3500 and up is the price point for a nice limited and or race gun.

Remember those affordable window air conditioners? Joe says no.

Theyre joining gas stoves in being 'regulated' (read: priced out of your budget). Wouldnt want the serfs being too comfortable.

Y’all send some prayers up for these folks. Looks like it was a doozy. Anyone on here from around there?

Who is liable for insurance when shipping?

I keep seeing disclaimers on gunbroker auctions stating that insurance is not included and/or costs extra. Not just from private individuals but also businesses.

One in particular was concerning to see because it looked like they wouldn't accept credit card payments if you wanted to fully insure the rifle. I'm not going to buy that particular rifle, mostly because it has hit crack smoking prices, but I generally prefer credit card for these types of transactions just so I have some protection from fraud. But suppose I did buy it and it never showwd up, or showed up damaged. Would the seller be able to stop a chargeback with those terms listed?

Reloading Equipment Free stuff

Have multiple bags of 6MM Creedmoor Brass. Most is LRP. 75 Hornady, 43 Starline, plus assorted other brands with a few quality brands that are Small Rifle Primer. All brass is cleaned.

Note, All Brass is Range Pickup.

Pay shipping and its yours. If you want a part, that’s also fine. I think the picture clearly shows the brands and quantity. I have it and if anyone can use it, I like them to have it.

Also, if one chooses local pickup, then obviously there are no shipping costs, it’s Free.

Now for the bait and switch. I have a partial box of Hornady A-Tips. There are 85 bullets in the box, all but one remains untouched in the original packaging. One bullet was seated in a dummy round to check chambering. Cost for the 85 bullets that also includes the polishing cloth is $50.00 plus shipping.

Also, I have some assorted 6BR, 6.5x47 and 6.5 PRC cases in small quantities. If anyone wants em, let me know. I’ll get them to you as cheaply as possible.

Firearms Lone Peak, Krieger, Foundation, TS Customs

After kicking around the idea for the last six months or so I’ve decided to list the best rifle I’ve ever owned. I simply don’t have the time to shoot anymore.

Lone Peak Fuzion SA Mag bolt face
Foundation Centurion in black
Krieger 4 groove heavy palma 1/8 @ 28”
Hawkins bottom metal

Barrel was chambered by Travis @ TS
.115 freebore using the 6.5 prc2 reamer

The “2” designation on the reamer is +.002” @ the case web which solves the sticking issue inherent with the SAAMI chamber specs.

Also outfitted with-

Triggertech diamond trigger
Accurate AICS 7 round mag
Hawkins brake (blended & timed @ TS)
AccuTac WB-4 bipod
Foundation bipod mount

The rifle shoots lasers with no pressure issues whatsoever. I run Berger 144gr hybrids on cruise control at 3060fps

$3,500 firm

Gravely vs. XMark

I’m gonna need a new mower soon. I have a 23 year old John Deere riding lawn mower. It’s been a damn good mower, I mean a DAMN good mower. But the deck is worn out, the front end is worn out, the hrdrostatic drive is on its last leg, my son tore the cowling, over the motor, up a long time ago, the tires won’t hold air for long, and it needs a new battery…it’s just a mess. The bad thing is, the motor is an excellent motor, and still runs great.
So…I’m gonna break it to the wife that it’s time to get a new mower.

When I retire in a couple years, I’ll be moving, and where I’m moving to has at least 2 acres. So, I’m going to be looking for a ZTR mower.

My limited knowledge about them leads me to either a XMark or a Gravely.
The XMark is obviously the most popular with the lawn care services, and that means a lot to me. It has more electronics on it. Not sure if that’s a good thing or bad. It’s probably more comfortable than the Gravely. I’m sure the XMark is a great machine.

The Gravely has good reviews, seems to be a more simple machine, less electronics, which means easier to work on, and it looks like it’s built like a frikkin tank.

One thing I don’t want is a tin foil machine. A heavy duty deck is a must. A reliable motor and drive are necessary. I don’t want the mower to spend most of its life in the shop.

Anybody have any pros or cons about either machine that they’d care to share? I’d sure love to hear which machine you’d prefer, and your whys and why nots.

It’s going to be $6000-$8000 dollars I’m sure, when it’s all said and done, so I want to make the best decision. I’m going to continue to read reviews before I buy. I just thought I’d get your $0.02 worth as well.
Thanks.

Had an interesting encounter at Lowes.

I was wearing one of my Sniper's Hide sweat shirts, standing in the checkout line at Lowes. As I turned to leave and old guy said, "Hey I like your shirt" I told him I shoot long range and he brightened up and mentioned he was headed up to Raton NM to the NRA Whittington center, had I heard of it? I told him I got certified as a Barrett Armorer there and shot my M82 out to 1000 yrds. He told me he had hit the White Buffalo at 1350 yards and that he was going out to meet up with members of his old team from Viet Nam, headed up by Col. Robert Brown. We chatted for a moment more then I wished him well and God Bless.

I'm kicking my ass for not inviting him to go shooting, probably could learn a lot.
