Sled for Squirrel Zero?

I am testing ammo with a couple of .22 rifles at short range. I want to have confidence in squirrel head shots under 50 yards. I have been using front and rear bags because I used them in a PRS course.

Somebody suggested using a sled. I hadn't even thought about it. Is there any point in using a sled for this particular goal, or is it overkill for the purpose?

Vortex Fury and Kestrel Workflow Recommendations

Hi all. I have been lurking and reading for a long time, but I’m relatively new to the Hide and am just getting into some medium range bolt action.

I’m hoping some members can share some of the pros and cons of the different ways one might use a Vortex Fury with a Kestrel. I’m trying to identify the most efficient workflow for generating reliable ballistic solutions in the field without paying for redundancy that isn’t needed. My initial use cases are hunting to about 400 yds and paper punching to 600 yds. Both will primarily be on open western prairie, where wind is definitely in play.

I just purchased a Kestrel Elite, with the idea that it will serve as my primary ballistic solver. I’m contemplating also picking up a pair of Fury ABs. I can’t help but feel like I’m throwing money away by paying for the AB Elite engine twice, however.

It seems to me there are several potential workflows here. For those pairing similar devices, what’s your preferred workflow? Are any of these options objectively the “best?”

1. Fury AB and Kestrel Elite. Fury pushes range to Kestrel. Use Kestrel for firing solution. Pay for AB Elite engine twice.

2. Fury AB and Kestrel Elite. Kestrel pushes wind to Fury. Use Fury for firing solution. Pay for AB Elite twice.

3. Fury AB and Kestrel non-Elite. Use Fury for firing solution. Pay for AB Elite once.

4. Fury non-AB and Kestrel Elite. Use Kestrel for firing solution. Pay for AB Elite once.

Im generally a buy once cry once type, but I’m also open to the possibility that I’m overthinking my needs here and just geeking out on gear. I want to future proof my setup a bit and give myself room to grow, but I also have to wonder if a basic Kestrel, a standalone LRF, and a DOPE card would suit my current needs just fine.

I’m trying to figure out where the sweet spot is for solution accuracy, efficiency, and spend.

Thanks in advance for any insights you might have based on your experiences.

So. Many. New. Calibers.

I started shooting precision back in 2008 and got my first custom 308 from Jared Joplin in '09. Since then, the sport became industry and there's all kinds of new gear and calibers. My god, I know we needed better ballistics than the 30-06 and 308 but have we gone overboard? To each his own but man, it's hard to see the roles all of these calibers play beyond niche shooting matches, and it's hard to believe the industry will sustain those calibers in years to come. I guess this is how its always been, noting all the Winchester rifle rounds that have come and gone. Still, it seems like companies will have to trim their product lines at some point. For what it's worth, I fully recognize that some of the new calibers are vast improvements; I am enjoyer of both the 6.5G and 6.5CM.

Would love to hear your take on whether the industry will sustain all this "innovation."

My Distressed Terminus Zeus Build is a GO !

Getting ready to start the 6 ARC build so I can play with the different bullet weights and speeds, I am gonna pair this build with a gas gun so I can look at the progression from gasser to bolt in the 6 arc space.

My Zeus build is on a Zermatt Matterhorn stock which is just crazy nice.

The barrels are being spun up by Bugholes as we speak for some Terminus PreFit Action

I have a 20" and 24" barrel coming so can I can experiment with the shorter barrels in the 6 arc space as they intended but also a longer barrel to get the speed, in the end it may require a 26" to get it right for comps, but I think with the factory bullets we have a potential to bridge the gap in cost to play, correctly.

With Hornady having a :

105gr at 2750, we know this is probably too slow, it repeats the Valkyrie numbers but with a 6mm so...

Then they have the 103 ELDX which is 2800, might be the right first try, the speed is correct.

Finally for factory loads i am lookin at, the 80gr Varmint load 3000fps, this might be the ticket considering the results we are seeing with the 100gr 65CM. The 100gr 65CM is bad on paper, great on steel, so at 3k, the 80gr load might be the ticket

Anyway, this is my start, more to come

Red Dot 30mm ring caps for Badger or Nightforce 30mm rings - do they exist?

I have been searching to find a replacement ring cap for the Badger Ordnance or Nightforce 30mm rings. Not the one piece mounts, the older rings. I’d like to put 90* dots on my mk12s and I have come up short.

The 32mm objective (circumference larger than 1.3”) of NXS compact prevents use of the Reptilia stand alone mount. At least as advertised. If I put the 24mm back on, this seems like it would work but the NPR2 reticle is faster for me to hold off than the Mildots.

I’d prefer to not go to one piece mounts for these rifles, as it doesn’t fit aesthetically IMO.

I’m wondering , has anyone used the Nightforce pic rail cap on the 30mm lightweight rings? Curious if it works and how high it puts the the dot.

Had anyone found a solution to mount an RMR or ACRO on older rings?

Impossible to Level Scope Ring Caps Accurately?

I'll probably get flamed to death for using the word "lapping," but here goes.

I was putting some rings on an Athlon scope for a squirrel .22 tonight. Like a lot of rings, these have 4 screws each on top. That means it's possible to have all 4 corners of the caps at different heights, and there is no way to measure their heights accurately.

So if you get in there with your lapping tool and get everything true, and then you take the screws out, put the scope on, and put the screws back in, how is it possible that you will get the caps back on exactly as they were before you lapped them? If you can't, isn't it pretty likely you'll throw off all your lapping work?

This looks like a softball for anti-lappers.

Shooting "Lefty" / Fundamentals

TLDR:
I am right handed.
My right eye is crap. (its not a dominance thing, its a R-Eye 20/40, Left Eye 20/20 thing). One of the main reasons I was having trouble in field matches was I could not actually spot targets. As in Left Eye "there it is" Right Eye "What you talkin bout willis!"

So as the Spartans say I was gifted with a perfectly good spare eye. Conundrum:
(1) I can shoot left handed. Yes have to retrain, but I'm not a pro, so its not a horrible option. Obviously still early in the process so its awkward, but its doable.
(2) I shoot right handed/left shoulder. Still using my right hand as primary I am easily able to shoulder the rifle on the left and use it as intended. However, I worried about screwing up my fundamentals as now the right hand is at an angle to the gun and it may throw off my press and of course grip/shoulder pressure.

Any thoughts on which is better or just stfu and get to practicing the new way?
