Scope question

I’ve been shooting MK5’s with no issue. Thought of trying a MK4HD, for Brenda ‘s 22. However, my Brenda is a world class comparison / bargain hunter. She is not your typical female bargain hunter / shopper. She gets results. Like saving thousands on new vehicles. Plus she keeps me solvent. Hangs on to pennies like they are gold bars. She makes mr. Tightwad, Scrouge McDuck look like a binge spender.

So, she was wanting to know what other scopes are equivalent to the MK4 in terms of glass quality, field of view and of course, PRICE. I apologize for being dumb on this matter. I can tell you exactly what high end scopes have/don’t have cost etc, but I have never really explored mid range scopes because the MK5 has met my needs.

Calculate drop for 6.5cm seems off...

I am working up a ballistics table for my brother in laws deer gun and have two seperate results. One from my Kestrel (which matches AB Mobile) and another from the Hornady 4DOF calculator. I suspected less drop with the 6.5cm but cannot figure out where the isue is. Being a deer gun and his location it is likely never going to be shot over 500yds, but I built the table out to a 1000 in case he gets the chance to try it at longer ranges. I know this all needs to be trued as well but the drop data is throwing me off.

Rifle: Winchester XPR 6.5cm
Twist: 1:8
Site height: 1.75
Ammo: Winchester Ballistic Silvertip
Grain: 140gr
BC: G1/.509
Zero distance: 200yds

KAK 1n5 twist 11.5" v. 1n7 twist 11.5" , both suppressor ready, .076 GP.

KAK has both these available, and for some reason I am interested in them.

I typically prefer precision oriented complete uppers, when I buy a complete upper. ( most spare uppers I own I have assembled with precision oriented barrels. )

FWIW... I don't expect a KAK 11.5" upper to be a MOA "everyday" shooter. I accept it for what it is.

Both are MLGS.

1n5 twist, Fluted SS 11.5" barrel

1n7 Twist, phosphated 11.5" barrel

I will buy or the other... any valid reason NOT to get the 1n5 twist rate ?

Is the 1n5 twist rate just to fast for current match grade bullet jackets ?

I like the heavier , fluted profile of the 1n5 version... but again is that twist just to fast for any thinner jacketed 77gr match bullets ? ( first time with that fast of a twist )

Given the lack of meaningful dwell time of the gas system and GP size... could a LtWt BCG, low mass buffer setup "possibly" help allow it to function without a suppressor ? Any thoughts would be helpful in my choices.

And thoughts on a muzzle device ? ( until the suppressor arrives )

Recoil mitigation , and staying on target, flash suppression, would be the goals here. Surefire Warcomp ?

Best 5.56 bullet for Coyotes

So I look for this topic in Hunting and Fishing and did not see anything. I have four 223 candidates for this to load. 64gr soft point, 62gr TBBC, 55 and 60gr orange tip. Longest possible shot is 200 yds and likely closer to 100-125 yds. An AR-15 is what I will be using. I have to admit that even though I read about those plastic tip wonders I am concerned about tips breaking off and causing problems.

Defiance Deviant Tactical action issues

Bought a lightly used custom rifle - around 150 rounds out of it. Has a defiance deviant tactical and bartlein. Bolt binds up a bit when it's fully at the back and you try to rack it forward to pick up a round. If you don't have it held loosely and push perfectly straight, the bolt front end will just get "stuck" on the action somehow and not move. Happens pushing too far inside, outside, up, or down.

Gun was cerakoted by the custom builder when they originally made it about 10 years ago. Thoughts?

1962 MAS 49/56 Sniper rifle

Picked Mas 49/56 Sniper rifle ( along with a 2nd 49/56) not to long ago and once I get some 7.5 French ammo for it I will be taking it out to the range. Can't tell you a lot about it other than it appears to be a well built rifle though I would call this more of a DMR than a Sniper rifle though I have read that they are very accurate out to 800m

Night Vision Athlon Cronus CL35 640 - first impressions, first hunt + 2nd hunt update

TLDR - Good clarity, range finder works as advertised, seems like this unit might be a "If I could only have one" level unit, if on a $3000-ish budget

Full and fair disclosure, I got this unit for T&E from Athlon. I'm not being paid by them, nor are they advertising in exchange. I'm just writing an article on thermal for a publication and it was available as a result.

With that said, I wanted to get my paws on it because it appears to be the new hotness for those without a generous Uncle Sam, trust fund, or five figure thermal in the budget.

I got the unit in hand at 7 PM and we had a 7AM departure, so time for reading and learning was very limited. We were happy to find the optic was minute of pig close to POA/POI without having to even go into a zero menu, so it did make it into the field and did put a pig on the ground.

The Athlon was being used side by side with a Steiner C35 Gen 2. The photos below shouldn't be taken as a comparison per se - we have a year on the Steiner, and barely adjusted the Athlon. The Athlon was on a 12.5" Grendel with a Leupold VX6HD 1-6x, and the Steiner on a 14.5" 556 with an old school first gen Vortex Razor 1-4X. The pigs were at 180 yards per the laser. The pigs decided to charge, which didn't prove to be the move. In both cases, through the scope, species ID was easy and absolute. The shots below are all taken from video.

I've come to really appreciate scanning with the handheld. Even a first gen Burris with a 400x300 sensor makes life much easier, and minimizes the amount of swinging guns around while scanning.

The view that shows the 196 yard laser shot is taken through a cell phone cam, so again doesn't begin to capture the clarity you're actually getting to the eye.

On the gong, the two shots above the center dot was with the scope, and the two to the right were just clipping on without touching zero. I let well enough alone and it was indeed minute of pig.

Craddock Pangris barrels range trip + The Redemption of Battle Arms

I had a plan. It was to spend *all day* at the range. That turned into having to work a little, but got there for 10:45. Plenty of time. Getting all this stuff out, targets set up, etc was 45 minutes. Then I got a call from work that we got in a rush order that I had to deal with at 3PM. Cue beating head against concrete.

I was able to get the bare minimum I wanted to accomplished, which was to check out the 13.9" skinny and 14.5" .750 fluted guns, verify function, and swap my NOX over from a 12.5" to the Battle Arms build.

I don't think I was shooting my best today. I got some 1" groups, but I had more called flyers than typical. I plan to get back out there sooner than later with my sons and some more time, and hopefully we can identify the practical accuracy potential for the Craddock barrels when sampling some different ammo. For today's abbreviated trip, I was satisfied.

All guns were 6.5 Grendels barreled by Craddock - two .750 18's, two .750 14.5's, and two .625" 13.9's.

My plan was to use my 20X reference scope on all rifles, and then to see what ammo preference they had, and best possible 5 shot groups.

What actually happened was I verified function on the 14.5" - the 18's and 13.9s had both been shot a little prior too.

A long long long long time ago, before the wind, before the snow - Battle Arms Development gave me a store credit due to a couple things having some QC issues. I documented them, and the CEO of the company ultimately got involved and gave me the credit. I used it for a BAD matched ultralight receiver set and their proprietary charging handle, the RACK if I recall.

As seen, the dry Battle Arms build is 5 lb 6 oz. I think I could hit 5 lbs even but I used a JP Silent captured spring (2 oz heavier) , the 14.5" .750 fluted bbl vs .625 13.9" (~3.5 oz heavier}, USGI charging handle would be lighter, and a full mass BCG. I wanted the gun to be light but not at the cost of strength/functionally. I don't feel like there are any short cuts that compromise utility. With an optic, can, heavy but effective mirage cover and loaded she is 8.5 lbs. If I recall, the weight savings using the BAD receiver set is 6-7 oz and the Smoke Composites across the three components is another 6-7 oz.

The gun ran 100% and I think all accuracy was indian, not arrow. Will get back out there to figure that out asap.

SIdebar, the Geisssele magazines solve all feeding issues. 100% reliable across all 6 guns.
