Savage 10 Ashbury 308 simple review and range feedback

Got this rifle(308) last Nov, during discount to $1,000, Savage $150 rebate and used all my 80% Cabela`s gift cards bought at Ebay, end up cost me around $650, definitely a budget rifle on a tacticool chassis stock. Would prefer more on 6.5 CM but local store out of stock and don`t want to wait for 3 weeks shipping.

Here`s a first look, since winter weather in Alaska...barely shoot it at pleasant environment during winter time and some small issues need adjustment, I finally zeroed it and tested shooting at 100 yard for accuracy. Much cheaper compared to RPR, and that`s the main reason I got this rifle.

Couple of things I want to mention before the range results, since this is my first "precision rifle" I guess.
1. Folding joint extended stock for 2 inches, and my Barra 4-16 scope got a rather close eye relief, even I mount the scope to the very rear end of rail, my mouth still too close to the damn folding joint, recoil my kick my teeth out....I bought off-set rings to put the scope around 1.5 inch closer to rear, problem solved.
PS: The scope itself is good for the price, I spend $200 for a 4-16 illuminated scope and a 4-12 entry level scope. Both have very clear glasses, similar to my Nikon Prostaff , I`m happy with the price. Shooting on 308 and 30-06, both hold zero well over 100 rounds.

2. The original CTR stock came with a medium cheek riser, I do prefer Magpul PRS stock, or those adjustable stocks like Luther AR or the one on RPR, CTR is able to lock tight, however rubber pad doesn`t help with recoil at all and it was not comfortable to shoot all day. Again I can`t find a Limbsaver for Magpul at local stores, and Amazon refuse to ship to Alaska, I ended up bought a cheap muzzle brake with shim washers on Ebay, reduced recoil, annoyed people at adjacent lanes, and luckily didn`t affect accuracy. I do feel sorry when I saw an old man have his grandson shooting a 223 with $900 suppressor in the lane next to me, and I`m banging my extra loud 308.

3. The hand guard is at same height of rail, so if your scope got rather large object lens(mine is 56mm), you may need extra-high rings to raise it up.

4. Accrutrigger feels good, no need to lower it. AICS pattern magazine only, not like RPR, which can take both. Putting on magazine is not so smooth but works fine.

5. Bolt movement is not smooth either, compared to my Tikka T3 stainless, but with CLP it won`t bother me.

On the range
Happy about barrel temperature. Somehow my Tikka T3 stainless 30-06 gets hot fast even in Alaska winter outdoor(10 F), only takes like 10 rounds fired at 30s-45s/round frequency, and the POI will move 1.5 inch toward bottom left, grouping expands to 1.5 MOA. Savage APO`s barrel gets warm but not hot after 20 continues fires, grouping and POI stays same(as much as I can notice at 100 yard).

I also tested out different factory ammo and here`s the results.
Shooting position is bench rest, bipod on front and sandbag under left arm to hold rifle.

2.jpg
I thought FGMM 185 gr bullets will be more stable on this 24 inch 1:10 twist rate barrel, but seems 168 gr works better, could because shooter error. I was testing 185 gr at end, maybe eyes got tired. The Sig Sauer Elite Performance works really well on this rifle. probably 0.6 MOA, but I`m out of this ammo on range, I did my 5 groups X 5 shots/group test using FGMM 168 gr.

5X5 Grouping results at 100 yard, about 15 mph side direction wind. Wind should not be a factor at 100 yard for 308.
The free phone app called "SubMoa" on app store, not so easy to use allows me to save all shooting results with detailed condition, convenient for reloading.

IMG_3368.JPG

The average grouping is 0.72 MOA at 100 yards, based on 5X5, 25 rounds test, with factory ammo and factory rifle. I`m totally satisfied with this results, especially knowing that if I`m shooting Sig Sauer Elite Performance 168 gr, the results could be maybe 0.1 MOA better. Now I`m thinking of getting reloading gear and improve better performance, and reach to further distance!

That`s all about my Savage 10 Ashbury.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can give me suggestion on reloading data for this barrel (.308 24 in, 1:10 twist). Also if I want to improve accuracy performance, is there any upgrades I can make to this rifle?

10/22 barrel question - free float or what the best option?

I have an old 10/22 that has an aftermarket bull barrel and stock.

The paint on the stock is trashed and it's time to repaint the stock.

I know with a Centerfire, you want the barrel freefloated.

I'm wondering with the much smaller 10/22 alloy receiver, is it best to free float the barrel or is that too much stress on the receiver?

What's the best option?

Thanks

Springer air rifle scope suggestions

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a target rifle scope in MRAD that is "springer rated".

My criteria would be:
Parallax down to 10m min
First focal plane or fixed magnification
Target reticle in MRAD
Springer rated (Going on an HW77 .177)
Budget would be around 400$ (I have other money pit guns already)

How I intend to use this:
Target shooting out to 100m max mostly out to 50m
Some pest control

I reached out to arken to see if thier LH-4 can handle a springer with bidirectional recoil impulse.

Newsom plans to steal the House

So California has Gerymandered all Republican districts out of existance... and has called a special election for November to fill seats in the new districts. Which will tip the House into Democrat hands in as little as three months.

Methinks it's time to find about 10 corrupt democrats in Red States and jail them... and have their seats filled by gubernatorial appointment. Also have Ethics Committee remove about 10 more for violations of stock trading and leaking documents and other crimes.

They want to go Banana Republic... let's go Banana Republic!

Consistency, or lack thereof

Been reloading .308 for a year, upgrading rifle and reloading components one piece at a time, pursuing consistent 1 MOA accuracy. Have achieved good to great results on occasion, but the only thing consistent is that my loads consistently turn to shit the next day.

IMG_5973.jpeg

Shot these two groups recently, thinking I had it. Ive thought that before. There were 20 shots total, the other two groups a little larger but still under 1”. SD 8. ES 12. 20 shots. Avg velocity velocity 2640.

That was the last of the Varget jug. New lot runs about 40fps faster. Tried that, then went down from 42.8 to 42.2gn. Velocity was all over the place. Avg was close to targeted 2740fps. Groups were shit.

Well, I have 100 Lapua cases and maybe 400 Federal cases. Federal isn’t all the same lot and hasn’t been sorted by volume or weight. Maybe the universe won’t let me get away with that and wants me to get more Lapua.

Today, it was Lapua brass, 42.2gn Varget, SMK 168, CCI 210, and a pile of shit. ES 50. SD 18. WTF?

Compared that to what I thought was a good load from a few months ago with Berger 168’s, left over from a match. It wasn’t good. Big groups and big numbers.

Rifle is Remington 700 action, Criterion 24” light varmint, MDT Oryx, Nightforce NX8 4-32.

Reloading equipment is old RCBS rockchucker, charge master light, Redding full length sizing die set to bump shoulder .002”, Forster ultra micrometer seating die, and a 21st century expander mandrel. I trim every time with a Lee deluxe trimmer, if for nothing else, to chamfer the inner neck. On Federal brass it leaves a weird flange around the mouth of the case, which was suspect, and couldn’t be cleaned up with a hand deburring tool. On Lapua brass, no noticeable flange or weirdness around the mouth.

Recently started trying to anneal by hand, rotating case necks under flame until too hot for my fingers. It’s probably inconsistent and may be doing more harm than good. Neck tension and seating force feel much more consistent since using mandrel, Forster seater and annealing.

I suspect the Rockchucker is inadequate, but can’t imagine it’s the main problem. Haven’t checked concentricity. Why buy a gauge only to tell me my process is fucked? I dunno. Had faith the new Chargemaster was accurate, but will need to check that, too. My other scale is a super old Rcbs digital, so not sure how much that will tell me, if anything.

Gonna get a few hundred more Lapua brass to eliminate that variable. Haven’t tried all the bullets or all the powders. Haven’t tried all the expander mandrels. .3065 worked better than .306”.

If there’s anything obvious I could be doing better, feel free to point it out. I’m thinking a few imperfections are adding up to a big imperfection. Then there’s the human factor. I’m not a perfect shot but want my rifle to shoot better than me, and it doesn’t.

510 Whisper Build Advice (Stock/Bottom Metal/Magazines/Twist/Barrel Length)

Hi all,

After my first and mostly successful foray into custom bolt actions with my 338 Lapua Improved build, it's time to start the next one. I have decided to build a 510 Whisper bolt action. I was wondering if anybody could help with some questions regarding parts selection for this build. So far, I have purchased the action, which is a Remington 700 footprint Long Action that supports 4.050" magazines.
  • Will 510 Whisper cartridges fit in a 338 Lapua Magnum AICS magazine? For my 338 Lapua Improved build, Fritz at Black Canyon Customs machined out the shoulder guides of my MDT 3.850" AICS magazines and I am curious if I would have to have something similar done for these to fit, if at all.
    • Is there any point to using 4.050" magazines that have a max COAL of 3.970"? I see that the 750 AMAX load on SSK's load data has a COAL of 3.620" and a standard CIP AICS magazine allows 3.740". It's always nice to have some extra room to work with, but if it is going to make everything else a pain, I won't bother.
  • Are there any chassis-style stocks (like the MDT ACC Elite or MPA BA etc) that accept 4.050" AICS magazines? I have not been able to find any.
    • If no chassis style stocks would work, what stock would you recommend? I would prefer to keep it at or less than $700 if at all possible.
  • What length barrel would you recommend? I am happy to SBR the action and go with a short barrel. I was looking at the SSK load data and they are using an 18" barrel. I think this is a bit long for my needs, as I was planning on developing my loads with Vihtavuori N110 and it is a very fast burning powder.
  • What twist rate would you recommend for a 510 Whisper? I see that Maker Bullets offers a 1000gr 50 BMG Subsonic REX and a 900gr 510 Whisper Subsonic REX that both have a recommended twist rate of 1 in 10.
Thank you in advance!
