Maggie’s Interwebs Help

I’m looking to help a friend that can’t connect to several gun forums but can everything else on his WiFi. This is happening on his phone and tablet. Both android. I Googled it but didn’t really get what seems like useful help.

Anyone have a solution or explanation at least. Thanks

USMC M40A1 Return Stock Case Study (The Progression of McMillian Stocks)

Hey guys if you know me I'm always researching in the National Archives for Marine Weapon info. I've been hitting the National Archives lately on the M40 series of rifles and I've been able to find a lot of new info on them.

One thing I have found at the National Archives (that I'm really excited about) is how to date M40A1's. So if you have a Return stock, if you give me the last four on the stock I can date it. Before anyone says anything, it is possible stocks were swapped, but this does not seem very likely by the docs. In seems rare a stock was swapped. But this case study will see if I am correct.

After seeing the post on the new run of smears and seeing all 50 stocks in one post, I thought this would be a lot of fun to do the same kind of post on the Return Stocks.

If you guys post your return stock (with a similar angle side shot as those below) I will take the photo, edit it, and then put it into this post in order. I just think it would be a lot of fun to put the stocks in order and see the change of McMillian over time. :) Like for instance they say the earliest were more green. We can now see if that is correct by charting it.

So to get this started, a few of the ones I've seen lately. If you have one, please add it to this post with the last four of the serial. If you want to be private, just message me the info and I can add it publically, or I will keep it private for my own research. Whichever you prefer.

Kitchen knife handle replacement/repair

Got a 20+ year old JA Henkels santuko knife that the handle has finally cracked and broken off. They wont/cant repair. Still waiting to hear about a replacement knife under warranty. If they wont warranty it it wont hurt my feelings as 20+ years, the knife owe's me nothing.

Anybody on here that builds knives think they could make me something to replace this? Would need to drill rivets out, make new handle, and some way to attach it...maybe a machine screw and recessed nut type setup. I dont know how their original rivets are done. Maybe a material like G10 for the handle.

I did some google searching with no real source of somebody who readily does this, even though it seems to be a "common" problem with knives like this(not just Henkels knives).

Do I need match ammo at 100 yards? Or is it a waste of money?

Probably a rookie question, but I’m trying to learn whatever I can.

Let’s say I’m primarily focused on practicing my fundamentals and I’m not yet trying to match my rifle and which load is optimal. And I only have access to factory ammo.

I’m shooting a 20” ar chambered in 556, 1:8 twist, stainless bull barrel. I’m using 1” pasters as poa.

If I start at 50 yards, I don’t see any reason to be choosy about the ammo I bring. I mostly shot IMI 55gr fmj and 62gr m855.

I’m going to the range on Friday to continue practicing, but at 100 yards. Again, I’m primarily looking to practice fundamentals and get familiar with the new rifle, but hitting where I’m aiming is one of the primary ways to determine if I’m doing it right.

At a short range like 100 yards, do I need to start bringing higher quality ammo? Or should I expect close to the same results as at 50 yards with the basic stuff?

By “close to the same”, I mean consistency in being able to troubleshoot MY shooting, not extreme accuracy.

Thank you for any advice!!
