Tract Toric 4-25x50 review

Some on this board have called the Tract Toric, a Zeiss S3 clone. While physically, I do not think they look all that similar, their performance specs are. So perhaps calling it a "clone" is not a derogatory statement. Both share an impressive 160 MOA of elevation adjustment, unusually tall turrets, and excellent fit and finish in their construction.

Tract sent me a Toric 4-25x50 MOA ELR to test and evaluate. My first impression was positive. The Toric sports a striking graphite grey color, oversized turrets, and butter smooth knobs and rings. In my range testing, I found the glass to provide a bright, detailed, clear image with little or no chromatic aberration at maximum magnification. I'm limited to 100yrd ranges locally so my tests utilized the same 8.5"x11" USAF-51 chart at 100yrds. In comparison, this Toric and a Leupold Mk5 yielded similar resolution ability.

Ask 10 different people what they think about a reticle and you'll get 20 different opinions. I like Christmas Tree reticles even though I have no business using them, since I mostly shoot 100yrd rimfire. I prefer less busy, finer reticles for shooting bullseye targets, so the Toric fits my style. The Toric MRAD ELR reticle has a a cleaner layout than a Leupold Mk5 PR2, while providing more subtensions in a tall column below the Christmas tree. And unlike the Zeiss S3 MOAi reticle, the entire column is illuminated and not just the center mini-cross.

An odd feature I noticed was what I thought to be a throw lever socket on the magnification ring. After contacting Jon LaCorte at Tract and asking him how to remove this and what levers fit it, he told me that cap was the Argon gas fill port. They recommend using clamp on polymer throw levers which can break away if knocked into barricade during a match and not transfer vibration into the scope internals. I hope they include said polymer lever (and better lens caps) in future packaging of this scope.

Rye how hard is the forming of the brass, do you run it thru the expander die. This might be my next project when I shoot my 260 out.

For the reamer you used, was it the 6.5 SLR, or the 6.5 SLR/S? Looking at your COAL and length to ogive, I think the 6.5 SLR, but want to verify.

I am in the process of building one now, and will start load development early next year.

Specs will be:

Rem 700 SA trued

PT&G bolt

26-27" Bartlein 1 in 8" 5R Match w. Rem Varmint/Sendero contour

Manners T2A stock

Timney Calvin Elite @ 1.5# (+/-)

Seekins 20MOA Picatinny base, 34mm high rings

Steiner T5Xi 5-25x56 SCR

Remington brand .243Win brass

Federal GM Match LR primers

140gr. Berger VLD Hunting

Powder TBD

Redding 6.5 SLR dies w. competition seating die from Robert Whitley

Re: 6.5 Super LR and 260 Improved variants

Mine is closer to the regular (long) SLR print. I used .298" neck for clearance, loaded cartridges using unturned Winchester brass measure .2945" neck diameter.

My freebore is .140". I just measured the throat with a Hornady comparator set and at 534 rounds down the barrel it still shows no change from new. Also measured COAL when on the lands with the 3 bullets I have on hand:

136 Scenar-L 2.910"
140 Amax 2.934"
140 H-VLD 2.978"

All the above loads have the bullet above the neck-shoulder junction.

RyeDaddy,

What does one of your empty 6.5 SLR Winchester brand brass weigh? My Remington brass weighs in at 163.2gr. +/- 1 grain.

I don't see 6.5 SLR listed at Redding. I'm considering the 6.5 SLR for my next build but I"m looking for dies, reamers, and headspace gauges. thanks, Jerry

Redding dies are only available through 6mmar.com as far as I know. Just go to the site, get the phone number and call. I ordered my reamer and gauges through Pacific Tool and Gauge.

Personally I prefer the Whidden dies, having used both. If you go with the Whiddens, be aware they do not come with a tapered expander so you'd need to buy an expander (I like the Sinclair Gen 2) if you want to neck up from 243.

I have not tried Varget. But I have a bunch for my .223.

I called Redding myself, and they only make the dies for Robert Whitley to sell from his site, 6mmAR.com , as it is a proprietary round. 6mmar.com/65_SuperLR.php

I have pretty much refined my load.

43.8gr. H4350 @ 2910fps average over 20 shots +/-8fps.

Berger 140 HVLD seated .0300" off the lands.

Shoots in the mid .2s so far.

Accessories Printed Cleaning Rod Storage Racks

I have had a few requests for some custom cleaning rod racks lately so I am going to put up a few different options for sale amongst the other items. Prices are TYD. Custom requests welcome, just takes a little extra time and $$ depending. Colors are going to be primarily red or black, if you don't specify I will just ship what I have. You can see dimensions in the images also if you have any questions regarding so. The cleaning rod holes are tapered to "self center".

$30 Basic Cleaning Rod Rack: The basic cleaning rack will hold 6 cleaning rods and can be mounted to the wall via 2 #8 screws.
$38 Basic Rack With Magnet: This model will hold the 6 cleaning rods but can be mounted to the wall via 2 #8 screws or can be attached to a steel object via the two magnets on the back. The magnets are 70LB pull a piece so be careful and don't set it right on your phone or any sensitive electronics. The rubber O-rings that are in the back are to keep the cleaning rod rack from sliding around . The magnets have a lot of pull force but the friction generated between the plastic rack and a smooth metal surface isn't sufficient to keep it in place, so that is where the O-rings come in.
$40 Upgraded Rack: The upgraded cleaning rack will hold 6 cleaning rods and can be mounted to the wall via 2 #8 screws. This also has a small tray on the one end for miscellaneous storage (jags, brush or something you are using right now) and the other end has two hooks for hanging common cleaning materials from. The wire diameter on the hooks is .110" (just under 1/8" diameter).
$48 Upgraded Rack With Magnet: This option includes the upgraded cleaning rod rack with magnets and O-rings. Again please use caution around the strong magnets as described in the above basic rack with magnets option.

Reloading Equipment Expanding Mandrel Organizer

I have had a few requests for an organizer for the expanding mandrels. Incase anybody else could use one here it is. Price is TYD.

$22 Expanding Mandrel Organizer: This will hold the die along with places for 9 different mandrels. This is currently setup to work with mandrels that use a 3/8” shaft diameter. If your mandrels have a different size just let me know and I can change the size of the holes to work with your type of mandrel. This can sit on the bench or be wall mounted via 2 #8 screws.

$28 Expanding Mandrel Organizer Flat: This will hold the die along with places for 13 different mandrels. This is currently setup to work with mandrels that use a 3/8” shaft diameter. If your mandrels have a different size just let me know and I can change the size of the holes to work with your type of mandrel. This can sit on the bench or be wall mounted via 2 #8 screws.

If there is enough interest in a model that has a cover I will look into this.

Reloading Equipment Bullet Puller Organizers

Please let me know if you have the RCBS cam (die type) bullet puller. The collets are a little smaller than others and I use a smaller hole diameter for those.

I printed these bullet puller organizers for a few people and they worked well. If anybody could use one PM me.
Red or black. If not specified I will ship what I have on hand. Can do custom colors on request but it might be a few dollars extra.
$20 TYD Inertia Style puller: Holds 6 of the collets and the handle. This works with all the most common inertia driven bullet pullers. Lyman, Frankford arsenal, RCBS and the knock offs of this type. This can just sit on top of the bench or be mounted to a wall via two #8 screws. To use the handle holder it needs to be mounted to a wall or side of bench as shown in the images.
$28 TYD Cam lock Style bullet puller: This will work with the most common die type bullet pullers such as Hornady, RCBS and Forester. This will hold 10 collets along with the dies and their respective components and allen key. I can add the custom labeling to the collet holder like in the image for $5 extra. You would have to include what you need them to say and in what order. Given the depth of the collet holder hole, most collets can still be identified with the factory stampings. This can just sit on top of the bench or be mounted to a wall via two #8 screws
$38 TYD Cam lock Style bullet puller with lid: This option will include a lid to cover the cam lock style pullers only. See image for how it sits on top. This can still be wall mounted or sit on the bench.

If you have any questions or other custom requests please let me know and we can figure it out. Thanks.
