I made some target analysis software...

First, these are Python scripts, not programs. Second, they are worth what you're paying for them. I'm not a programmer, so they are currently pretty easy to break. You need a newer version of Python, as well as a few libraries like openCV and tkinter. That stuff is mentioned in the scripts, but if you use an IDE like IDLE it'll throw errors that tell you what you're missing.

Why did I do this? Because I wanted some specific data that you usually only get from something like a ShotMarker system. Specifically, I can fairly quickly get lots of precise X,Y positional information into Excel with these. Also, because most of the free programs that do this only have phone apps, and I wanted something on a desktop.

But that said, I built two different versions. One is a manual program with features similar to what you'd find with Range Buddy on Android. The only thing I think I have left that I'm planning on adding is some features to remove previously marked shots or groups. You can have multiple groups, but right now editing after you assign stuff isn't built. Maybe someday. It's currently just simple basic functionality.

The second version is an automatic analysis script that uses a specific target I designed. It identifies all the target points and shot holes for you, with the ability to remap things at the end. It's real purpose is to gather up to 30 shots for statistical analysis, and the target was made with a very precise rifle in mind. It's got a very fine grid, so you could actually do a fair job of calculating X,Y coordinates by hand.

Both scripts then output all their data into CSV files which you can do further analysis on. This includes XY coordinates and deltas from intended aim point, so you can go ham with CEP or DRMS or whatever.

Anyway, they are free, and you can edit them if you want to change colors or add functionality or whatever. I did enhance some of the visibility after I recorded this video, since I realized some stuff was hard to see on smaller monitors. LMK if you have any questions.

Nosler 175 RDF.

For those of you shooting 175 RDF’s in your .308’s what are you seating them at? I’ve heard a lot of guys say in the past that this is a very forgiving bullet but I haven’t been having too good of luck with them yet. I’ve only ever shot 175smk for years but recently bought a box of these because they’re a lot cheaper and have a better BC. I started out doing load development and seated them just inside mag length but still had problems feeding them so have kept pushing them back until they would feed but now it seems they’re all over the place and I’m wondering if my loads are getting compressed with how long they are. Using Lapua brass and 43.3 IMR 4064.

Hornady bullet comparator issue.

20241110_224911.jpg

Ok starting sorting bullets with the hornady bullet comparator. After watching tv I noticed my measurements were changing. I would got back to pile and they were all different. I had the anvil/bushing on lower caliper jaw then close they jaw till the base of the bullet touched the upper jaw. The spin the bullet till it sat flat on the jaw. So i guess its wearing it out being aluminum and be making rookie mistakes. Is this a common issue and keep going till it makes a nice seating spot. Its frustrating because all my piles are off. F@$K IT load them up to the max and send it lol.

Question on setting up sizing die for once-fired brass

I have a few thousand pieces of 223 brass from Speer Gold Dot factory loads that were fired once. I intend to load them for this one rifle, but I do not expect to fire them many times. I want to know where I should set the shoulder.

Background
I deprimed them with a universal decapping die.
I'm setting up a Redding Full Length Type-S Bushing die. I've got the correct SAC bushing in the die so it squeezes the neck down such that the Redding carbide button pulls it out 1 thou. I'm not going to do a mandrel die for this volume.

Base to Shoulder Datum
I put the appropriate case comparator in my calipers, a once-fired Speer case, and zeroed it.
I took at least a dozen cases and fired them several times each to fully expand them to my rifle's chamber.
The fully expanded cases are +2 thou BTS.

What should my goal for the BTS dimension be?
Bear in mind this is a semi-automatic rifle so I cannot use the bolt-close method.
+1 thou should be 1 thou under the chamber dimension.
0 should be 2 thou under the chamber dimension.
General rule-of-thumb is 2 thou under chamber dimension for semi-auto actions.

I think I should resize the cases while keeping the BTS dimension the same as a once fired case.
I believe when I resize the cases, it will raise the shoulder 1 or 2 thou.
With careful adjustment, I think I can have the die push the shoulder back down to +0 compared to a once fired case.

Does this plan make sense? Is there something I fail to understand? Ordinarily, I would fire brass several times and use the bolt-close method to set my die and BTS dimension. In this case, I do not want to fire the brass any more, but want to set up as intelligently as possible before I size thousands.

Best lightweight steel long action?

Looking at the defiance anTi, impact hunting action and the kelby nanook. Integral rail and lug preferred.

Wasn’t considering the Ti actions or the BAT. Unless anyone has some strong feedback. Most threads seem to turn into a poll of “I have this action and I like it.”

Anyone have any type of accuracy issues or performance issues with any of these actions since it seems like they are pretty skimpy on material?

Burris Warranty - my experience

so i just had to reach out to use my warranty on an xtr 2, havnt had a problem with it but one of the turret locking screws stripped, not the internal thread the hex portion, now i called berretta australia and they dont stock that and their option was to send it in, currently on the match gun and shooting under .5 MoA with factory ammo so dont really want to take it out of the rings and off the rifle since the other works fine but i reached out to burris in the USA and with the details i provided they turned around straight away and said yep were sending you some ASAP.

i heard good things and i chose burris for the warranty and it was great for my budget at the time aswell and im impressed and pleased that what i had heard and read was indeed correct, thanks burris!

Jo.

tl;dr just wanted to share im quite impressed with burris, their customer service and support and fast turn around, frick yeah.

25 Creedmoor

“I suppose you could say I’ve come full circle, I started this game with a .25 caliber rifle, and after many many years I have a new one. I learned much with that first rifle, a Ruger M77 in 25-06, I still have it, and I dont think I’ll ever get rid of it.

My love for the 1/4 bore was cut short, by the lack of high Ballistic Coefficient bullets. There is a good assortment of 115-120 grain bullets, but many of them peeter out long before my then goal of one thousand yards. So despite claiming many of my first’s, the 25-06 went to the back of the safe.
In the defiance of time, I always had a 1/4” hole in my soul. Turns out that I wasn’t alone, and some folks with impressive math skills finally saddled the long range quarter-horse. Black Jack Bullets is a new manufacturer with a specialty in high BC 25’s.
As soon as I had spoken with Miles and Logan, I was convinced that my old love of the 25 needed to be rekindled. I almost immediately started Operation Quarter Lord, my goal; a .257 rifle that I could build light, and haul all over these Rocky Mountains to take antelope, deer, and even elk.”
