New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

brass001-1.jpg

Still shooting this box of 50.....

Was out shooting steel a few days back with my brother. We shot an AR500 plate at 640 meters in high winds. He shoots a GAP .308 and 155gr scenars at 2950fps. He was holding 2.6 mils for wind, I was holding off 1.2 with the 6.5 to make the same hits. Time of flight between the two bullets was like night and day.....probably the only rifle I'll ever hunt with again.

Pat,

I noticed that you are using magnum primers. Any particular reason why? Just curious, as Im finishing up my personal 6.5 4s this week, and I've never used magnum primers in the WSMs I've had.

Thanks

That's pretty cool Pat. How are those 139's flying for you? Do you like them over a 140gr AMAX?

They shoot a little better than the AMAX's....at least in my rifle. As you know, everything drills in these rifles.

You should try to make my shoot next spring....hop in with George and Josh. We always have a blast!

My testing shows the Tula Large Rifle Magnum primers are equal to F210M's as far as ignition. They don't seem to any "hotter' than 210M's. I use them for everything except my .338LM. I tried them in that round and had hangfires....not fun with a LM....

Tula primers also fit the primer pockets better according to what Josh is telling me. I trust his word over many due to him loading so much of this.
Try and get Tula magnum primers.

As long as I don't freeze to death.... I'm in! I saw the video from the last time and you know its snowing when you have to shoot from a tent as cover! :D

KYS,

Indy is right on your way there if you need a relief driver!

Question on my GAP 6.5 4S I have 5 round mags. I ordered one extra. But I only can get four rounds in them. I can't attach the mag with the bolt closed with 4 rds in it. I can attach it with 3 in the mag and one in the chamber or just 3 in the mag. I sent a email to them and know they are busy so hoping one of you can help me out. Not sure if these are correct or not. I should have checked them sooner but I have been just single feeding at the range until today.

George I know previously you briefly mentioned when designing this round doing it on the 300 RCM, I'm curious why you went with the SAUM over the RCM.

Seems to me (granted I have no where near your experience) that for a hunting round the non rebated rim of the RCM would be better suited for hunting.

see his post from earlier in the thread.....

Yavapai Kid, Initial loading's were based on Quick Load predictions which are not 100% accurate but are ballpark. Bryan Yeung (posted above) tested these loads with a strain gauge type pressure meter and the predictions were very close to the QL predictions 53 to 56k . Nobody has made a Pizo or CC test Barrel and got actual's yet. But I'm not that worried about it at this point as its doing what we theorized it would do so its a mood point. 3k+ with the recommended loads. 61gr H1000 on 140 , 63gr H1000 on 130. You want to add horsepower there is plenty of room but your mileage will suffer.

Like I said if I could truly reinvent the wheel I would gave the 6.5 RCM a longer neck a slightly shorter body. I like the none rebated rim of the RCM and the case capacity. But the SAUM was the easier of the cases we were looking at to get, and to make. And if there is a chance someday to get cases made and properly head stamped this one will be the easiest.

wow, I read that and completely forgot most of it.

I've read most of this thread, a lot of neat information.

I am thinking about ordering one of these pretty soon. I have some questions...
Has anyone shot it without the brake?
If so, how was the recoil, I am thinking it would not be too bad with 130 gr bullets.
Has anyone tried retumbo? I have 9 lbs of retumbo in my cabinet that needs to be used.

Finally got my 6.5 SAUM finished, I cannot wait to get some rounds down range!

No neck turn 0.298" neck 0.081" FB

Alternate powder options

I know H-1000 is the powder for this round. Do to powder shortage everywhere is there other close options like 7828ssc, retumbo,N-560,N-165,H-4831. Has anyone tried any of these while still keeping the pressures down? Thanks

I too am wondering this question about recoil w/o a break? Can hits still be spotted at closer ranges w/o the micro vias?

Is that barrel 30" it looks looooooooooooong?

It turned out longer than I intended. The barrel is 27" from the front of the recoil lug to the crown, the brake adds over an inch on top of that. I plan to see what kind of speed it gets with 140's and 61 grains of H1000. If it is worth it I will keep it that way, if not I will chuck it back up in the lathe and cut it down to 24".

Hope to introduce these two next week! Mr. Boo Boo meet Mr. 6.5 4S Xtreme Hunter #13!

Yea, i've read through this whole thread. There was a guy earlier asking about re-barreling his tikka t3 in .260 and was told it wouldn't work cause its a .308 bolt head but I'm willing to bet that the tikka t3 in 300 wsm with some tlc and magic pixie dust from gap would be a great affordable shooter in 6.5saum.

Should work fine. Manners makes a great Tika stock in the EH-T fr Tikka

Hi George,

Can you use the original tikka T3 lite stock instead of upgrading to a Manners EH-T fr Tikka?

been watching this seriously, I have a model 7 rem in 300 saum I want to rebarrel, can this rifle be rebarreled for the 6.5 and run thru the model 7 magazine,,,, don't really want a clip fed gun, thoughts,,,

Yes and no.
Yes, in that it would work. But no, in that you wouldn't be able to feed the 130 & 140gr bullets at the recommended length from the shorter Seven action and blind mag. And launching those long bullets is where the appeal lies with this cartridge, so it really doesn't make sense to hamstring it with coal limitations.
I'm a big fan of Sevens for hunting rigs, but using a Rem 700SA/Wyatts box for my 6.5 4s build...

BTW, NICE buck!!!

I did a fair bit of research on which action had the most room so that i could use an internal mag as i didn't want a DBM on a hunting rifle either. I wound up with a Mod 70 originally chambered in 7mm WSM, i can fit 3, 6.5 SAUM in the internal box with 130gr Berger hunting VLD's seated as long as i want.

Done did it, works great ;-)

*Tikka T3 SS .300 WSM
*McM R700 A-hole stock filled and re-inletted for T3
*Benchmark SS #5 contour barrel, 26" long
*Mini muscle brake
*Atlasworxs Tikka T3 DBM
*Alpha mag type 2, feed lips tweaked for SAUM
*March 5-40 FFP glass

Likely going to change out the McM for a W3C chassis once it clears customs ;-)

Rifle is boringly accurate, 5.9 mils to 1000 with 130 Bergers over 63 gr. H100 just as foretold by the mystical one called George.

A long action, magnum bolt face T3 would work as good as a WSM, the only difference between the two if you're
not re-using the factory stock and mags is the bolt stop has shorter throw.

I'm trying to go the more inexpensive method too and buying a tikka t3 lite 300 wsm.

Can you use the original tikka t3 lite 300 wsm stock?

Thanks!
