Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, but I didn't see a section that seemed a better fit.

I'm moving to North County San Diego this friday. I have a .223 Rem 700 Tactical with 20" threaded barrel and SAS muzzle brake. I Just want to make sure I am within the law having the brake, which is threaded to accept a suppressor. I don't have a suppressor, but I don't want to run into any trouble out there. Anyone have any info about whether I'm within the law or not?

Sorry to hear this. Anyways, i would hope that bolt actions are exempt from their communist gun laws.
 
No legal issues since it's a bolt rifle.

If it's a centerfire semi auto there is a an entirely different set of regulations to contend with.

Nope, it's a bolt gun. Screw whatever you want on the muzzle so long as it's not a suppressor.

No SBRs here but that isn't a problem for your 20" barrel.

The flowchart on Calguns is great but it applies to semi auto centerfire rifles with detachable mags so you don't run afoul of SB23 & the assault weapons name & characteristics laws here.

You can do just about anything you want with a bolt gun in CA.

i think when you cut it down to 5" you have to add a bullet button and a single round sled mag. then cut the butt stock off and register it as a pistol

Yeah figured, as I just had to put a bullet button on my blunderbuss. Comes with a pilgrim hat at least.

Actually what your describing sounds like the pistol from Blade Runner, SSG69 LOL!

Yeah welcome to the "fun" state. Your bolt gun is fine, just don't screw on a suppressor. Got to be real careful down here, not just Federal, but State , County and City regs. Get to know Calguns well and a local gunshop / range for advice.

Ditto. Incredible photography.

I have some old (and somewhat fond) memories of the Kurds, the mountains of Iraq and Syria and some very strong (and sweet) tea...along with some roasted goat of course. :)

Nish, drop a PM when you get settled. I (and a friend) have a place to shoot a few hours away in the desert. Can at least get you out to 700 without any issues, and if you're feeling really brave (with the fish tailing, through-the-canyon winds out there) we can even stretch out to a grand. We're limited to not shooting in the summer, but when it cools off, it's a nice area with little traffic.

And yes, the Kurds are very hospitable. I'll be visiting them again very soon....

Ditto this, there are several nice ranges within an hours drive, and the Santa Margarita 600 and 1k matches are on MCB Pendleton. Drop me a pm as well, I've lived in Del Mar my whole life and frequent all of N county. I'd be more than happy to show you the best the area has to offer.

It's a drive, but worth it to get access to BLM land that you can shoot as far as you want to on. When I lived in Venice, I'd make the haul out there at least once a month, often camping over night. Invest in a some good steel targets and ideally a 4x4 and you're set. Having access to so much open BLM land in SoCal is one of the many things that makes me miss CA.
 
Ocotillo, theres a pretty popular section near the ocotillo airport, south a couple miles across the old train tracks in front of the ridge. Google earth it and you can find it. There are other better spots for lr but those are a little more guarded.
 
I flushed that toilet six months ago. Best thing I ever did. I got to the point where I stopped shooting. Get caught shooting with a gun you bought legally in the past in CA and become an instant felon. CA can kiss my ass!
 
Hey, I'm here and settled in. Anyone up for a day of shooting next week? I was thinking of South Bay Rod and Gun Club, gotta re-zero my rifle. Open to other ideas for places to go. I'm in Encinitas.
 
Crap! I wish I had of known! LOL! We just went out yesterday. I'll let you know when we go out next (in a few weeks probably, now that its cooling off a bit).

South Bay is a pretty decent range...great Irish Pub at the shopping center (next to the Movie Cinema) before you head out to the middle of nowhere on the border. Great for an after shoot brew...

BTW, I'm in Rancho Bernardo ("RB").
 
If you are just looking to sight in at 100, P2K range may be a better option coming from Encinitas. When I lived down in east lake, Delzura was the best option. The down side with P2K is that you are required to "qualify" on the 25 yard pistol range before they let you take the rifle over to the 100 yard indoor side. You need to do this with every rifle you shoot there and bring back your form so you dont have to requal each time. You also don't hang your own targets on the rifle range, you clip them in this carrier and the staff take them down.

Thanks for the info, maybe i'll do that tomorrow or something, then head to south bay later in the week.
 
SBR&G is 25 dollars for the day
P2K is 14 dollars for the first hour and 10 for each additional hour

If it takes more than two hours to check the zero then I guess so.

Except for the range only going out to 100 yards, P2K is a much better range on every level
 
South Bay Rod and Gun Club costs $100 for a yearly membership. It is an extremely well-run range. It's clean, has a good target setup, and the people are friendly. There are also lots of competitive shooting opportunities there. Average two trips a month and the price comes to less than $5 a visit. If you can't afford that, you probably won't be shooting anywhere because ammo isn't free either. FWIW, there is also BLM land about a mile short of the Border patrol station on the way to SBRGC.

Another possibility to consider is the NCSA Pala range. This range has steel targets to shoot literally everywhere, and the long range goes out to 890 yds. There is also a 200 yd range and pistol range. Wind is generally more of a consideration at Pala, and the hours for recreational shooting are fairly limited. The annual fee is $65.00; however, you also pay $15.00 per visit as a member. NCSA Pala also hosts a variety of shooting competitions.

If you live anywhere within an hour or two of San Diego, these will be your best bets as far as ranges go. Although fun on occasion, I personally don't fancy driving 2-4 hours each way just to shoot 1K yds out in the desert every time I want to shoot. As far as paying money to shoot indoors in San Diego, well I just don't get that. Here are a couple other reasonably convenient options to consider if you want to shoot in the area.

I live about an hour from Palm Spings so I can always find a spot relatively close. The OP wants a quick place to verify the zero on his rifle after the move and P2K is a good place to do that from where he lives. Going all the way down to SBR&G will add another 2-3 hours roundtrip in the commute. If the discussion turns to annual memberships, that's a different story.

Thanks guys. I went to P2K to zero yesterday, not a bad indoor range. I'm looking to go do South Bay next week to check it out. Maybe tuesday or wednesday? If anyone would like to go, PM me. I'll check out Pala the following week or something.
