My brother has one. We use it out at his range in KC.
The optics were really nice. I don't think his came with a tripod. We used it out to 500 yards with no issues.

Not a complete answer, but consider this....
Why would a variable power scope be a bad decission? It would satisfy your needs for hunting (in that you can set it at lower acceptable magnification - like say 9x or 10x) and then crank it...

I'm partial to the Lee case trimmer. Easy... accurate... use in your corded/cordless power drill and its also fast.

I use both, but - for me - I find the sand bags a better choice. You can't "load" on them like a bipod (and there is no reason to), but the sand bags provide sligthly better stability for me.
