I got a shotgun from a buddy, Mossberg 590A1, the metal (aluminum?) trigger gard has deep gouges/nicks on it, to the point where it is a sharp edge in places. How would you suggest I go about fixing it? Can I sand it with progressively fine sandpaper and then tough up with some kind of liquid paint?

Thanks for any advice here.

If you can, remove the trigger group from the gun, if only to make it easier to handle. Then, use fine grit wet/dry sandpaper to gently smooth out the sharp spots and the gouges. Wrap the paper around the eraser end of a pencil to get in the tight spots. Touch up with Krylon then shoot the thing and enjoy.
