Gunsmithing my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

great work!

all of these damned DIY threads is making me want to try to build a can on a form 1 again.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

i worked on the muzzle today. i set it up the same way i did to do the chamber starting out with a .001" indicator in two spots along the range rod and then two .0001" indicators.

muzzle1.jpg

muzzle2.jpg

then i cut the profile for the muzzle brake and the threads.

muzzle3.jpg

muzzle6.jpg

i figured the muzzle will either be protected by the brake or by a thread protector that protrudes beyond slightly so i just went with a basic 11* crown. with the muzzle threaded to 5/8", there wasn't enough room to do a recessed crown in my opinion.

muzzle5.jpg

while the barrel was still set up in the lathe, i installed the muzzle brake and bored the exit hole in it.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

since i am using a badger ordnance recoil lug that is .312" thick, i had to open up the aics a bit.

recoilluginlet.jpg

the endmill i had that was small enough diameter to open this up didn't have enough flute length to cut deep enough for the badger lug. i cut as deep as i could and then removed the rest from the recoil lug, about .08".

recoilluginlet2.jpg

recoilluginlet3.jpg

i just threw the scope on to get an idea how i want to make my bolt knob. i will make the bolt knob, install the trigger and assemble the bolt tomorrow. i don't have a pool so some back yard mini-rubicon porn will have to do.

then i am on a mission to find powder and bullets. i hope the range has some this weekend when i am down there for our local match. none of the local shops have any 7mm 175 smks or 4831sc. once i am satisfied it will shoot (crossing my fingers), i plan on finishing it with flat black moly-resin.

thanks. as of now i am planning on flat black moly-resin.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

i made a quick, no measurement bolt knob today. i think it took me about 15 minutes. the only measurement i made was the diameter of the bolt shoulder and mating surface on the knob. things go much faster when you aren't worried about specs.

i just went out back on my rock pile to do something "cool" for the camera. that isn't quite what i had in mind. good thing the rifle project is almost done. now i need to make a new drive shaft.

here are some older pictures though.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

i shot 25 rounds yesterday off a concrete bench just to make sure it wasn't going to explode. it shot ok but i don't shoot good off of a bench so it wasn't a valid display of it's accuracy. i loaded 25 more rounds today and got prone in the dirt (or pine needles) to send them down range. it was sprinkling when i started shooting but i consider this about as good as i realistically shoot. the dots are 3/4". this is with winchester brass with no other prep besides chamfering the mouth and full length sizing. the flash holes and primer pockets have not been touched. this is the load that a couple local guys use and i have not played with it yet. well actually yesterday i started a grain bellow this load and worked up to it to make sure it was safe. i have not done any real testing yet.

it shoots good enough that i am confident i can tear the rifle back apart and finish it in moly-resin.

first 5 rounds today:

284group1jpg.jpg

second 5 rounds:

284group2jpg.jpg

then it started raining pretty good and my scope was getting blurry from my breath so the groups opened up a bit (i know. i know. here come the excuses
smirk.gif
).

284groupsjpg.jpg

i didn't bother zeroing the scope knobs since i am going to be taking it off shortly. i also need to trim the rail since the bell hits it before i can get it far enough back for proper eye relief.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

That must feel great building it yourself and having it be a real shooter. I look forward to seeing it finalized.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

Robert

Not including the time you spent making your own tools and jigs, how about giving us an idea of how much time it took you to do the actual work.

While I realize the guys that do this everyday for a living have the procedures down, I think it would be good to know how much time and effort actually goes into the building of a custom tactical rifle. It would give people an appreciation of why it costs what it does when they consider taking a rifle to Joe Gunsmith on the corner to have a rifle made.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

Now thats a shooter! Must be a great feeling to know you built it yourself.

As an engineer, I like your attention to detail and how you indicated it to the final .0001.

Good job!

not including screw ups, i probably have 7+ hours just in dialing in the receiver and both barrel ends in the lathe. i would guess over an hour was spent on truing the receiver with most of that time spent chasing the threads. probably around three to four hours were spent threading the shank, cutting the recessed bolt counterbore and reaming the chamber. the muzzle end was about an hour to thread and crown. there is also a bunch of time taking measurements, recoil lug mods, disassembly/assembly and other miscellaneous items. i used a drop in bolt that was good to go so there would be more time if the bolt was trued up. this is also just the metal work. inletting and bedding a glass stock would add time as well as any other custom items.

i am still learning machining and this is my first attempt at a rifle build. like you said, someone that does this for a living would have their procedures down. even if they did it twice as fast as i did, there is still a boat load of time involved. i've never really priced a custom rifle for myself. the cost of a custom rifle from a top builder that i have seen posted here sound like a hell of a bargain to me.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

4+ hours to dial in, thread, fit and chamber and crown a barrel. 1-2 hours to BP a receiver, 1 hour to prep a stock for bedding.

Full blown builds doing it all, you can turn out two rifles a week if all goes good and no problems. Bake on finishes, add 3-4 hours to it.

Set up and doing it right is what takes the time.

300,

Very nice rifle with first class workmanship. You should be very proud of the rifle but, like I said before, your machining skills preceded you, your no green horn around the machines

Don't believe this. I was there yesterday and saw his groups. Two of his groups were less than 1/2 MOA. That was from the first 25 rounds down the tube. I think with prepped brass, and a proper bench rest for testing the rifle will easily shoot 1/4 to 1/3 moa.

300sniper is one of our fast rising up and coming shooters at our LR matches. Will be tough to beat next season.

BTW Robert, when I went back to the range today your target was still on the stand unmolested. Still looked impressive.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

i have 75 rounds down range now and am very satisfied with it's performance. since i was satisfied it would shoot, i took it apart and finished it in norrell's flat black moly resin today. it turned out pretty good and i am happy. before i did that, i engraved ".284 WIN" on the left side of the barrel and "R.E.D. 001" (my initials and 001 for my first one) on the right side.

284finished4.jpg

i guess i can call the build done now. now i should work on some loads but the one i have been shooting has been working damn good. i may not even mess with it and just shoot.

i just used a 90* carbide spot drill in my cnc mill. i goofed up a bit on the red 001. i had it .006" deep but didn't realize the barrel taper started so soon and the 1 didn't make it. i set it a bit deeper and redid it. this ended up making the red 00 a bit thicker than the 1. i learned from it and set up the .284 win so it was more even depth. i guess i learn something from every mistake

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

What reamer did you use? What is your freebore? That build looks very sweet, and what a shooter!! Also, what twist and bullets are you using?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

Turned out nice.

Now that you went through all that truing and dialing indicating just for shits and giggles for the next one only true the action face and chamber a good barrel and see what happens. You will be surprised.

Had a 7mmRM like that once, didnt even have the receiver face or recoil lug trued. It shot lights out, makes you wonder does'nt it.

ptg made the reamer. i had them grind it to the same specs george at ga precision used to build a couple local guys .284s. it is set up for winchester brass, 175 smks at 3.1" with .02" jump. i have not physically measured the jump yet, i just started loading at 3.1" oal and they seem to be working good.

it is 1:9 twist and i am using 175 smks.

maybe i'll give that a try. i think with a snug fitting bushing on the reamer and a floating holder it would be fine. now i need to start collecting parts for the next one. i need a .308.

That's a hell of a nice looking rifle you built! Thanks for posting all your work, pictures and progress. I really enjoyed reading this thread!

Actually in the photo it looks good and is an interesting affect. Kinda like 001 will be gone to 002..003...and up! With results like that...your off to a fantastic start.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

This has to be one of the best threads in a while. Great rifle,

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

thanks. it seems to be working pretty good so far.

i had it out to 1340 yards which is well beyond what i was intending for it but was making hits once i sort of doped out the wind. the wind was so inconsistent coming up the side of the mountain i was having difficulty but i still had some hits.

1300yards2.jpg

1300yards1.jpg

then i went back out to the same spot a week later and 44 degrees colder and moved the target to 1460 yards. things weren't so good at that point. my bullets were tumbling before they made it to the target. i still had a couple impacts but i have no idea where the rest of the rounds i sent that direction went
smirk.gif

1460yards5.jpg

1460yards1.jpg

the two impacts at 1460 yards in 24 degree temp (nice tight group
grin.gif
):

1460yards4.jpg

by the time i got on the 300 win mag the storm hit hard and i couldn't see the target anymore.

1460yards3.jpg

i let my buddy shoot it at the 1340 yard target and he made all hits so he is hooked now. i am going to put together a 7wsm for him on a stiller tac 30 action and broughton 7.8 contour barrel.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

That is very impressive! Many here talk about the building of rifles, but your pictorial is top notch. Thank you for the time that you have put into posting this. Enjoy your new tool.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

I have been building rifles on lathes and taking pictures of it for 9 years, and I am impressed with 300Sniper's professionalism and presentation.

This thread is eye candy for me.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

That was on of the best reads on this site yet. Well done and maybe you should try making one of these tactical 22 everyone is talking about? Great work.

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

I love this thread and the pics! I'm looking at the cost of a lathe and mill now!

My wife will probably not thank you.

300Sniper... You are the man... Keep posts like this coming Please. I also enjoyed reading it, It was like a story i could not put the book down.

Thanks

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

300Sniper shoots with us and I can tell you guys first hand that rifle he built freaking shoots. At the last practice at 800, 900 and 1K he was smacking the X and 10 ring over and over again.

thanks vu. i had some issues at 1k but that was me, not the rifle. i probably could have cooked bacon on the barrel by the time i was done at 1k

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

it's the machine that he milled the brake out of. Wrote the program himself too. Very cool. 300sniper, your an industrious guy. I'm a machine tool technology student and apprentice gunsmith, so I am green with envy at your equipment and skill. Kudos to ya'!

Re: my home shop .284 win build (pic heavy)

Awesome job on the build and the thread.
I really wish that I had access to equipment like that, so I could start to learn some serious machining skills.

Great Job.
