Not including the time you spent making your own tools and jigs, how about giving us an idea of how much time it took you to do the actual work.
While I realize the guys that do this everyday for a living have the procedures down, I think it would be good to know how much time and effort actually goes into the building of a custom tactical rifle. It would give people an appreciation of why it costs what it does when they consider taking a rifle to Joe Gunsmith on the corner to have a rifle made. </div></div>
not including screw ups, i probably have 7+ hours just in dialing in the receiver and both barrel ends in the lathe. i would guess over an hour was spent on truing the receiver with most of that time spent chasing the threads. probably around three to four hours were spent threading the shank, cutting the recessed bolt counterbore and reaming the chamber. the muzzle end was about an hour to thread and crown. there is also a bunch of time taking measurements, recoil lug mods, disassembly/assembly and other miscellaneous items. i used a drop in bolt that was good to go so there would be more time if the bolt was trued up. this is also just the metal work. inletting and bedding a glass stock would add time as well as any other custom items.
i am still learning machining and this is my first attempt at a rifle build. like you said, someone that does this for a living would have their procedures down. even if they did it twice as fast as i did, there is still a boat load of time involved. i've never really priced a custom rifle for myself. the cost of a custom rifle from a top builder that i have seen posted here sound like a hell of a bargain to me.
