..before you make an educated guess...here are some specs and photos.....

BTW.....Dave Kiff at PT&G is making the reamer.....I ran the neck through a different bushing die [that was obviously SHORT].

Here are the preliminary ballistics:

6.5mm 140 gr. Berger VLD

ACCURACY LOAD OBT = 1.345ms

Barrel Time = 1.344ms
COL = 3.265"
Powder = 57.1 gr. Reloader 17
Velocity = 3,183 fps
Pressure = 53,268 psi

MAXIMUM LOAD shows:

6.5mm 140 gr. Berger VLD

Barrel Time = 1.293ms
COL = 3.265"
Powder = 58.9 gr. Reloader 17
Velocity = 3,262 fps
Pressure = 58,325 psi

....hardly....with a sedate pressure of 53,268 psi...

For a 30.5" barrel:

the "venerable" 6.5-284 needs 59,157 psi to achieve 3,060 fps.

the "revered" 260 REM needs 59,874 psi to achieve 2,935 fps.

Want to know something else truly AMAZING....this cartridge will achieve

3,062 fps with 48,400 psi.....hmmnnn.....

....keep guessing.....it's amazing that this cartridge has been OVERLOOKED for so long....

This would be my guess as well.

If that didn't eat throats I don't know what would!

Pressure is not the sole contributor to barrel life.

I'm interested to say the least, the belted case has me intrigued...

"..yes it is....so, any guesses on the cartridge. ????"

my gunsmith is coining it The 6.5 x 61 Super.....Since the 7mm Remington mag killed it around 1962 or so....Norma decided to relieve the interior walls of some brass...Norma gained about 5 more grains of powder capacity, therefore matching the 7mm Mag ballistics. Norma renamed the cartridge to the 7 x 61 Super.

But..as in a lot of marketing campaigns....the 7mm mag proved to be too popular.

One thing my gunsmith pointed out very clearly...the 44 degree shoulder on the 7 or 6.5 x 61 is/was the only factory produced "Ackley-improved" so to speak...

John...PM me your shipping address...I am true to my word...I'll send you a box of bullets!!

Re: My next build....can you GUESS?.....

Uh... a 140 gr VLD @ 3200 fps is hardly duplicating 7mm RM. Have you run the ballistics?

7mm 180 VLD @ 2800 fps 2.6 mil 500 yd 7.6 mil 1000 yd
6.5mm 140 VLD @ 3200 fps 1.9 mil 500 yd 5.8 mil 1000 yd

If those numbers are real, this round TRASHES my 300WM shooting 208's and is SS to 2000 yds.

John

ETA: I won't even address the 270 WSM because nobody has seen fit to make a decent bullet for it. It doesn't stand a chance.

....the 7x61 S&H was developed a DECADE BEFORE the 7mm Mag and over 40 years before the 270WSM.

..I am not trying to duplicate the aforementioned ballistics....just taking it to the NEXT LEVEL......stuff a 6.5mm bullet into the 7x61...now we're talking!!

Quote:

Philip Sharpe and Richard Hart developed the 7x61mm in the early 1950's. In 1953 Schultz & Larson of Denmark started chambering their bolt action hunting rifle for a commercial version of the 7x61 S&H based on a shortened, blown out version of the .300 H&H Magnum case. Factory loaded ammunition was supplied by Norma of Sweden. The belted version of the 7x61 is also sometimes referred to as the 7mm S&H Super.

The 7x61's commercial popularity was limited by competition from the 7mm Weatherby Magnum, a more powerful standard length 7mm Magnum that was already on the ground. The introduction of the 7mm Remington Magnum in 1962 was the beginning of the end for the 7x61 in the U.S. market.

what is the ATTRACTION?

let's see.......AI shoulder, relatively low chamber pressures, highly efficient cartridge.

Re: My next build....can you GUESS?.....

I don't doubt those numbers are real, my 6.5-06 with a 28" barrel runs 3150-3175 with a 140 Berger. Ply1951Guy used his 27.5" barreled version to rock the mile target at TVP in 52 MOA over his 100yd zero. His rifle is a little slower, the node is only 3036fps

You will be burning barrels though, pressure isn't the only thing that does it. The simple act of putting that much powder through a small hole doesn't help throat life.

I'm not getting complete powder burn with Retumbo in the 28" barrel. I think RL17 is too fast for this case. If I'm reading QL snapshots right you're only a little over 84% filled? Put H1000, IMR7828 or Retumbo in it and rerun the data. I think you'll get some better numbers.

This reminds me of a belted mag version of the 6.5-06 AI with a little more steam.

I was thinking 7STW's little brother
wink.gif
. I'm thinking my shooting partner got a little over 1000 rds. out of his barrel and then rechambered to 300WM. But it was fun to watch the trace. That thing would hit 1300yds. on a rope.

That's about what you get from a 6.5-06 as well. Flounderv2 and wgsp watched it at TVP last weekend. After the first shot fired the comment was "Holy shit that's flat... c'mere and watch this, look how straight it goes"
