i have a rather odd question as usual . about making a 8 ga adapter for a 37mm launcher
1-it illegal to fire lethal ammunition through a 37mm launcher but what if it permanetly converted ?

barrel lenght for modern shotguns minimal is 18" does that apply to obsolete gauges / ive found a launcher with 20" barrel . i have 5 sources of ammunition . and know of least 2 gunsmith(real gunsmith) who cna doe this but wanted to ask if legal

Re: not s suppersor question but perhaps class 3

Firing any type of lethal or less than lethal projectile from a 37mm launcher is illegal unless the the launcher is registered as a destructive device. 37mm adapters for flares are ok as long as only flares or similar items are used. At a minimum ATF will view a launcher converted to 8ga as modern firearm needing a 18" barrel and 26" overall, they may view this as a NFA destructive device due to no sporting use of 8ga obsolete or not. You can register the 37mm launcher on a form 1 pay the $200.00 and not need to look over your shoulder. $200.00 will look cheep if you get in a scrape with the law over this conversion. Besides all of this, a 10" or 12" barrel will look much better than the 18" one.

well it wouldnt be firing 37mm lethal rounds or capable of it . 8 ga is legal like any other shotgun but doesnt to to be registered as a firearm since not commercial manufactor of "loaded" ammunition . a stand alone model would be neat

You need to send a letter off to the technology branch at the ATF and ask them about your project. Also just because you can't go out and buy 8ga ammo off the shelf does not mean the item will not be regulated by the ATF. I am sure any shot gun larger than 10ga will be classified non sporting and ruled a destructive device. (unless you are going to make a muzzle loader) This would also get around the age restriction.

Send him a PM and ask him then,I was on the SB when he said he turns 18 end of the year and wanted to know if his dad could buy a CL III weapon and he could use it.Nothing fishy about that.BTW,my niece was in college at 17,WWU and not some Community College either.

I think this is wrong. Many 8ga guns are still out there, I believe Ballistic Products still sells wads and hulls. They're just not legal for hunting waterfowl(the only role they ever had-not sure about turkeys, though).

I definitely agree with sending ATF the letter, though.

Actually, that is not correct. You must be 21 to buy an NFA item from a C3 dealer. But you can own NFA items if you are 18 years old.

There was a rather public case made about this a few years ago regarding a young man in Florida. The steps he took to acquire an NFA item legally after he turned 18 were pretty well documented. At the time I discussed this with my NFA examiner (I was a C3 dealer then). The law was written in such a way that an 18-year old couldn't buy from a licensed dealer but COULD buy from an individual of his/her own state. That makes perfect sense, doesn't it? LOL.

I too second Grogs forum! A little diffecult to navigate but full of awesome info on anything about launchers both technical and legal.

Actually now that you mention it, I do remember that thread.
