<span style="font-size: 14pt">Internet Explorer users 'have below-average IQ'</span>

Users of the most popular web browser, Internet Explorer, tend to have lower-than-average IQ, according to a survey of online habits.

11:19AM BST 01 Aug 2011

PC World reports that a "psychometric consulting" firm called AptiQuant gave free online IQ tests to 100,000 people, and then plotted the scores against the browser on which the tests were taken.

It found that Internet Explorer users scored lower than average, while Chrome, Firefox and Safari users were very slightly above average. Camino, Opera and Internet Explorer with Chrome Frame were scored "exceptionally" high.

"The study showed a substantial relationship between an individual's cognitive ability and their choice of web browser," AptiQuant concluded. "From the test results, it is a clear indication that individuals on the lower side of the IQ scale tend to resist a change/upgrade of their browsers."

Some people have suggested that there may be other factors at work. Business Insider's Matt Rosoff points out that since IE is the default browser for Windows PC users, anyone who doesn't know how to download and install a new browser will be stuck with it - "which drags down the average". And users of other browsers "include a disproportionate number of computer geeks", which might bring their average up. Or, he admits, it might be that "IE users really are kind of dumb."

Within the group of IE users, version 6 users score lowest, while users of version 8 do rather better.

The overall chart shows that Firefox has the smallest percentage of low-IQ users, and the largest of average or high-IQ users. A similar study five years ago found that users had broadly similar IQs.

Jared Newman of PC World said the results should not be taken too seriously. "They are, after all, comprised only of people who feel compelled to take IQ tests," he said.

"But if you ever want to argue that Internet Explorer 6 users are too stupid to upgrade, at least now you've got some empirical evidence."

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

Now that's not exactly a fair or reasonable conclusion...those results are easily explained by repeated and massive @#$%^&* crashes of IE while the people were taking the test, or failure of IE to load the page correctly in the first place, that led to scores being lower...not the users actually getting the questions incorrect.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

Those of use who "choose" to use IE are people who actually have jobs, wives or girlfriends (or both) our own homes, savings in the bank, and jobs that require us to go outside. Empirical evidence also indicates that users of Camino, Opera, and IE with a Chrome Frame are notoriously uncoordinated, clumsy, have Cystic Acne on their faces and backs, live in their mother's basement, and are chronic bedwetters as well as chronic masturbaters.
And their defective, two headed sperm swim in slow, lazy circles, not that it matters, because they never get laid anyway.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

Im changing to Internet Explorer to get laid and have the pox clean up - thanks Donttrytorun for the cure LOL

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

There are people out there that still hate Microsoft so much that they will write biased articles.

I used Firefox but it had a bug in it at one point that prevented me from viewing several of my favorite pages, and using it for XML publishing, where as IE did that just fine.

IE9 is my browser of choice, and besides the numerous Microsoft certs I have half dozen of the other certs including CISSP - so my IQ is not low.

Very biased article.

I can crash Firefox on a whim too, it still takes a certain stylesheet and it will just white screen on you.

Crap...

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

The report did open my eyes to Google Frame inside of IE. I didn't know about that until this report came out.
I use Firefox, but I admit that Chrome is better.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

I saw an interesting comment on another site.
They said that IE users were generally smart enough to not click on some ad about a free IQ test.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

I'd lump iPad users in with IE users if it were up to me.

But I suspect there are some high IQ people that like the snob status that comes with owning Apple products.

Of course, I've owned Apple computers since the 80's so I'm not without guilt. I still hate the iPad and IE.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

IE came already installed on my computer...

All I use the internet for... Is to watch porn, shop, and surf forums!

I don't need a fancy web browser for that! lol

I believe that this is one of the most intelligent statements I've seen here in a while.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

It is against the law to give I.Q. tests in WA state, in a job interview.

But if you do get a job, they give you a computer, probably with Internet Explorer.

I work in IT security, and I can tell you there are patches for each browser, equally broken so why not use the one that gets the best support?

Open source takes 6 months to get a patch released, Microsoft is usually 30 days to 60 days max, 1 week for high security.

I will make a log from today into the end of the month and post how many critical patches each browser has.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

Wow didn't take much to find this..
I'm actually a firefox fan....But to prove the point that each has security problems..
I see them as equal. Google will fix fast, Microsoft faster, unfortunately Mozilla being open source takes time to get the coders and testing done.
Fact: Open source does take about 6 mos.

So rest easy.

NOw what does IE have over the other browsers? Not sure if Google and Safari and Firefox do this but IE9 does NOT run as your admin if you are logged in.
It runs as a default user, and default users don't have access to any place except documents and pictures....although a virus could still plant itself there it would have to promote itself to admin to do so...

<span style="font-weight: bold">
April 2011:
Google has released version 11.0.696.57 of its Google browser which addresses a large number of vulnerabilities and sets a new record for the amount of money paid to security researchers as reward in a single update.
A total number of 27 vulnerabilities were patched in this release, 18 of which are rated with high severity, 6 with medium and 3 with low.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Fixed in Firefox 5
MFSA 2011-28 Non-whitelisted site can trigger xpinstall
MFSA 2011-27 XSS encoding hazard with inline SVG
MFSA 2011-26 Multiple WebGL crashes
MFSA 2011-25 Stealing of cross-domain images using WebGL textures
MFSA 2011-22 Integer overflow and arbitrary code execution in Array.reduceRight()
MFSA 2011-21 Memory corruption due to multipart/x-mixed-replace images
MFSA 2011-20 Use-after-free vulnerability when viewing XUL document with script disabled
MFSA 2011-19 Miscellaneous memory safety hazards (rv:3.0/1.9.2.18)

But even with six vulnerabilities patched, IE8 doesn’t even come close to Google Chrome 5.0, which was affected by 11 security flaws resolved in the latest stable release. Still, by far the winner in terms of patched vulnerabilities in June 2010 is Safari, with a total of 48 flaws.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

IE is much better than it ever was, but I still haven't used it in probably a decade.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

It all comes down to personal preference. I have used IE, Firefox, Opera and Chrome. I like Chrome the best by far, though I know some people that don't.

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

IE7 bitches!!
I also only run XP because '98 lost support

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

I'm an IE9 fan myself, NOT 8 and NOT 7...

9 is cool because if I have a bunch of tabs open but want one separated I can grab it and drag it as a NEW window, cool stuff.

I like Firefox and IE's "In private" browsing - that's some cool stuff for checking out "Artwork"...:)

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

My desktop is an old machine with not alot (relatively) of memory (Drive or RAM), so I stay old to stay light (at least that's my thought).

Chrome also has an 'incognito mode' that saves nothing of your history. It also disables any extensions by default so they don't store your data, but you can enable any extension(s) you choose. Chrome will also do the new window thing with any tab you have. I don't work for the Google, I'm just saying.

Firefox does too - think they invented it, and Firefox has a portableapp so you can load it on a thumbdrive, take your favorites with you, plug into a machine and have all your favs and run it right from the thumbdrive - cool shit:

Re: Still using Internet Explorer, you moron?

I was a big fan of Firefox for a long time, and then I got frustrated with the slow updates for extensions and sites not working correctly that would work with IE or Chrome. It's hard for me to go back to Firefox since I've been using Chrome for so long. Six of one, half dozen of the other really. That little app looks pretty cool!

ArticLight, we know you not dumb.

Background needed here methinks.

PC World, the company which commissioned the test are a UK based "Box Mover" of computers and lately other stuff like TV's etc. I say "Box Mover" because I went into a branch near me and asked them to order me a Mac (It was a company purchase scheme, so don't you go flamin' me). "No can do Blue" was the answer I got. "Well, why not then?" quoth I. "We just sell what comes into the store" was their somewhat pathetic answer.
Now, my problem is that I am overburdened with common sense, so I say "Well, just order the required item from your big depot, and when the box comes into the store, you can sell it to me then!" "Errrrr no. We can't order anything, they just send us the stuff and we sell that" "OK, so who are 'THEY' and how do I talk to them?" "Oh, you can't."
By now I was becoming a bit exasperated, not to say irate. The manager of the store saunters over and asks what's up, the sales donkey tells him I want a particular Mac, and it's not in the system, and he can't order one.
Manager asks me to wait a moment. He heads off to his office and I think <span style="font-style: italic">HE'S</span> gone to order the Mac. "Oh no he hasn't" I hear you all chorus, and you'd be right. He came strolling back with the exact machine I wanted BRAND NEW IN A SEALED BOX. Both me and the sales donkey are now standing going "WTF?" and the manager says by way of explanation, oh it's a managers special, if I tell you I'll have to kill you kind of deal. I just don't get this at all, because how the hell is he going to be able to sell it if he doesn't tell anyone he has it, especially when a CUSTOMER is asking for that EXACT thing?
Now, that's the calibre of PC World. They're a sub-division of "Dixons", I believe. Another UK high street Box Mover.

Nearest US analog would be something like "CompUSA" for PC World, and "Best Buy" for Dixons.

Imagine how shit-hot their tech support department is!

Sooooooo......

PC World move boxes with computers in them. It might as well be boxes of 'Spam'! They don't know how they work, or anything about how to make them work better.
The PCW staff will have told the idiots who shop there to fill in the IQ test on line when they set up their computer. It will be whatever the box had pre-loaded.
Oh yeah, and if you're shopping at PC World, you've already demonstrated the fact that your IQ is below average, by being in the fucking store in the first place. If your IQ was average or above, and you were buying a computer, you would have gone to a PROPER computer shop in the first place!!

I believe that this sets the article in the correct context.
