Not really sniper-related but vintage and kinda neat. Antique/collectible firearms etc website I frequent has several of these for sale.

Patented in 1876, this was a predecessor of the later and somewhat similar concept “Hollifield Dotter,” using the energy of the firing pin striking the back of a rod to propel it forward so a sharp point will mark a paper target with a pin-prick to show if the aim was good, and group size for several shots. These were widely used by the New York National Guard in their 50-70 rolling block rifles.
