Hawaii Supreme Court Scoffs at U.S. Supreme Court Ruling: ‘No State Constitutional Right to Carry a Firearm in Public’

On February 7, 2024, Hawaii’s Supreme Court issued a decision saying that the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bruen (2022) does not surpass Hawaii’s constitution, which recognizes “no state constitutional right to carry a firearm in public.”

The decision came in Hawaii v. Wilson, a case in which Wilson is seeking recognition of his right to carry a gun in public for self-defense without first acquiring a permit from the state.

Hawaii’s Supreme Court unanimously decided against Wilson, with Judge Todd Eddins, a Gov. David Ige (D) appointee, writing the majority opinion.

Eddins wrote, “We reject Wilson’s constitutional challenges. Conventional interpretive modalities and [Hawaii’s] historical tradition of firearm regulation rule out an individual right to keep and bear arms under the [Hawaii] Constitution.”

He then directly addressed the U.S. Supreme Court’s Bruen decision, which struck down New York’s proper cause requirement for concealed carry permit issuance.

Eddins wrote, “Bruen snubs federalism principles. Still, the United States Supreme Court does not strip states of all sovereignty to pass traditional police power laws designed to protect people.”

He later added, “States retain the authority to require that individuals have a license before carrying firearms in public.”

It remains to be seen what, if any, appellate action will be taken in light of another important aspect of the Bruen decision; namely, the recognition that the Second Amendment protects a right to carry a gun outside the home for self-defense.

On June 23, 2022, Breitbart News quoted Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s majority opinion, wherein he referenced previous cases affirming the right to keep and bear arms in the home for self-defense, then turned to Bruen and said, “In this case, petitioners and respondents agree that ordinary, law-abiding citizens have a similar right to carry handguns publicly for their self-defense.”

The case is Hawaii v. Wilson, No. SCAP-22-0000561 in the Hawaii Supreme Court.

The Marines

Question for all the Marines in the hide , I have a younger friend who's wanting to join, mid 20's, thin , bit of a pothead , but has worked as a roofer most of his adult life so used to hard work , but he's not a tough guy at all , not a sissy but never been in a fight , been bullied a little , I just don't think he's cut out for the Corp, my Question is do any of the former Marines especially recent ones , think a guy like this can pass basic training , I know it's not as tough as it was back in the past , but this guy's never had someone yelling in his face , he's kinda soft-spoken nonconfortational and I'm worried that if he doesn't pass basic , it might fuck him up emotionally, I'm I just being a worry wart.

arca mount benchrest plate

Hey all, looking for some advice. I'm new to precision rifles. Been reloading for years, but trying to improve my hand loading. I don't compete, but retired with a 200yd range on my property. Recently purchased a MPA pmr rifle. Loads of fun. In an effort to take the shooter out of the equation for load development I purchased a Sinclair competition bench rest. I need a plate for the benchrest. I see that 3" width is kinda the norm for the bench rest bags. I looked at the Sinclair bench rest adapter plate, but it is not compatible with an arca mount. Anyone have a suggestion for mounting a bench rest plate to my rifle with an arca clamp? I can get a cheap arca clamp, just need a suitable plate to affix. Thanks in advance!

PSA regarding mandrels...

Just a heads up/PSA... if using a mandrel with a Ti-N (gold) coating that's advertised as "not needing lube", disregard that advertisement.
Lube IS required.

This past weekend I expanded the necks on maybe 150 pieces of 6.5CM brass that had been wet tumbled and annealed. I didn't lube the necks during expansion just to see if it mattered. Yep. Expanding force was increased, and most importantly, at the end, it looked like there were streaks of galled brass running up the mandrel and it was very rough. I wrapped it in a cotton patch and hosed it down with Patchout & Accellerator and left it in the sink overnight. Patch was blue and purple the next morning, but was clean as a whistle and smooth again. Lesson learned.

No experience with the carbide versions or the "black" one from 21st Century, feel free to chime in.

Chime in with your experiences...

Ballistic glass

I know of a very large lot of used ballistic glass. Anybody have any ideas what to do with stuff like this?

Panels vary in size from about 27"x24" (estimated weight 100 lbs each) all the way up to 46"x67" (estimated weight 450 lbs each). These windows are very thick and EXTREMELY heavy.

There are about 100 windows on ten pallets of 1,800 lbs each. Total weight is 18,000 lbs.

The stuff is used, some is cloudy, damaged, etc.

Brass cartridge cases are yours Good ?

Yes that's the Big question . Are Your brass cases really as good as You think they are ?. Have You measured them and exactly HOW are YOU measuring yours ?.

I have a precision ground Granite Base or surface plates . Mine happens to be roughly 18"X18"X8" polished Black/Blue Granite . Have #4 AAA Certified Lab Grade plates . I came by mine in early 80's ,as there was a Scientific Quarry company in SoCal which Cut slabbed Raw granite. They had mile long Diamond wire saw and precisely Cut and Ground ,polished enormous slabs of granite . Also have a 2" X 88" ground straight edge , a piece given too Me by them for certifying or verifying levels .
They made various " Instrument Tables " of varying lengths and thickness . I just happened by one day when they were finishing a 12 Ft. x 38" X 8" table and scored the End cuts for Peanuts for what costs are now .

So I decided to Stand up some cases and using My Starrett Machinist precision ground level and square ,after using the Master level on the Base to insure level . SURPRISE !.

I'm resorting Many cases ,as I was surprised after taking some measurements . Oh case mouth neck thicknesses are Spot on using Ball Mic but Cases weren't all Plumb !!!.

FYi : That included Used ,New and even the Beloved L brand of Brass . So Just saying , ARE YOU SURE ? . I thought I was and then learned the truth .

As you were ,Carry on .

Newbie Asks: Why do you say the Production (Rifle) Division is a Joke?

As you may know, I'll be participating in my first match (Gadsden) on Feb 24th. Thanks to all of you who have given me plenty of advice this week, I really appreciate it!

I'll be "dancing with the girl that brought me there"...in that I'll be shooting my GAP Impact (hunting) rifle in 6.5 PRC. It's heavy, does the job, and I can't afford another cool looking tactical rifle with every possible rail and attachment right now.

I've read a few threads where the Production rifle Division is seen as a joke, but I don't understand why. Is it just that the higher-end rifles and optics are that much more precise than using a sub-$3,000 and sub-$2,500 scope? After I first read the rules it seemed to me that it would be more of a challenge to use production equipment - as if to level the playing field for the match.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. Thanks!
