International Harvester M1 Garand

I picked up a nice-looking Garand today. I prefer the oil rubbed finish to whatever lacquer type finish this rifle has, but it sure looks good!
Unfortunately, I got it too late in the day to take to the range, will have to wait till next weekend... not too up on my Garand prices, did I do ok at $950?
No clue what the barrel gauges at, but it doesn't have any pitting and is nice and shiny.
@pmclaine I got some nice wood today and wanted to share a picture with you :ROFLMAO:

RRS Anvil 30 for glassing and shooting?

Some background: I’m largely a hunter but I do some local matches and just generally like to shoot at the range when I’m not hunting.

I’m currently running a Promaster xc 525c tripod with a Sirui VA-5 fluid head. To be honest, it was great for just glassing, but it’s terrible as a multi-purpose shooting/glassing combo.

My newest hunting rifle sits in an XLR element 4.0 which includes the Arca rail built in. Problem with it is that the Sirui head won’t clamp to the arca rail unless you slide it in from the open end. Doesn’t work for me as I have a pic rail and bipod up front. Yeah, I can switch my atlas bipod to mount via arca rail, but I prefer to keep it as a pic rail mount so it’s compatible with my other rifles that don’t have arca rails.

I’ve been trying to research a lighter weight head that will meet my needs and seems like the Anvil 30 is recommended by a lot of crossover shooters and hunters as a reasonably lightweight head that can do it all.

I’d like to know how folks like high end ball heads like the anvil for glassing? I’ve used a cheaper ball head for binocular glassing and it’s great, but when it came to the spotting scope I didn’t think it was as good as a fluid head. Cheaper ball head though. Not a good comparison to one that costs 4x.

Also, probably a dumb question, but can you just set your rifle with integrated arca rail directly on top of the head and lock it in? No BS sliding it down the rail like my current fluid head?

If you have a strong opinion for the ideal spotter/shooting head combo I’m all ears. I’d prefer to keep it as light as possible though. I hike a lot when hunting and more weight is more pain. Thanks.

Are you happy where you live?

Question for you fellas and ladies.

Are you happy where you live?

Im trying to convince my wife to build another house on the far side of our property, away from the neighbors. I cannot stand having neighbors but we have them on 3 sides of our farm unfortunately. We bought this place 5 years ago and its almost completely paid for but damn I despise having people constantly in my business.

At my wits end... need some help from my Fellow 'Hiders. Chicken Fried Steak!

Ok... so I love Chicken Fried Steak. If it's on the menu, I am ordering it. The ONLY reason I ever go to a Cracker Barrel is because they have a decent Chicken Fried Steak and Gravy.

For the life of me I cannot make it at home... and failed again tonite. Yuck, still tastes like frying oil. I'm going to have to eat licorice or Kale to get the taste out of my mouth.

I know... I'm a Yankee. I have no business making Chicken-fried Steak. It's probably more secret among you Southern Boys than the Nuclear Codes or where Dent's Gold is...

But for the love of all things holy, would some of you guys post some actual recipes and cooking methods that work? Everything online recipe-wise is utter bullshit and never works. So there must be some secrets or tricks that no bimbo working in "Martha Stewart's Kitchen" could possibly fathom. Though Martha Stewart has a great tutorial on how to make a Prison Shiv Coozy. I am no stranger to Southern Cooking from Hush Puppies to Carolina Pulled Pork off a whole hog. But I cannot get Chicken Fried Steak to work. Ever.

Anyway... Chicken Fried Steak recipe thread. HELP!

Suppressors Rocksett - what did I do wrong?

So my Surefire shim kit came with a little vial of Rocksett, I had not used it before but have heard for semi's with high rate of fire and suppressors this would be better than Loctite due to its high heat resistance. I applied a liberal amount to my threads and then threaded on my TBAC SR brake, let it sit for over 24 hours and then tried to remove the brake and it spun off with little resistance??? What did I do wrong as the previous brake that was on there with Rocksett took significant force to remove? I'm used to Loctite but thought I'd try this stuff out; however, clearly I did something wrong...

Poor man’s shooting tripod

I was going to post this as a joke and then the more I played with it the more I realized it has true potential. I was tinkering around in the garage with my son and his air rifle and saw my bicycle stand. It is a Feedback Sports tripod. It can clamp the bicycle or your rifle just like a hog saddle and it is adjustable for height and pivots in all the necessary directions. You can actually get quite steady with it and you can reach all of the necessary controls for locking pivot and up-and-down while you have the rifle shouldered. I think it has potential as a toss in the back of the truck just in case kind of thing or even “leave it at your favorite hunting spot” deal, because who really cares since it’s only $110. (It can also double as a bicycle stand LOL.)
