Compass Lake

Just thought I’d share my experience with these guys. At the beginning of the year I ordered one of their uppers in 308. Was a 12 week wait, and anyone who’s ever ordered something like this can attest to, it was a long ass wait. Only good about the wait was that it gave me time to build out the lower. I’ll skip all lower details, it’s all the same quality stuff that everyone uses. The day finally arrives that I can get out to the range and start doing the barrel break-in that is recommended by Compass Lake. I wasn’t really shooting for group sizes during this procedure, but I was hoping to see some tight groups. That’s nothing like what was happening. I had multiple box’s of ammo from various manufacturers in weights ranging from 150 grain to 185 grain. Most of it was march grade ammo and all of it shot like shit. Best group I could get over 3 different range sessions was about a 1.125 group. The following group I shot with the exact same box of ammo opened up to 4". The biggest grouping I had with some Barnes match was about 10" So I called Compass Lake. We’ve all heard of good customer service, that isn’t even remotely what I got. I got OutFuckingstanding customer service! I spoke to Conrad, explained to him what was happening and he said to send it back and they will either fix the issue or replace the barrel. He shot it and basically got the same results that I did. So they turned another barrel and shot it, same thing. Seems as if they got a bad batch of barrels from Krieger. As they say, the third barrel is the charm. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out. Throughout this whole process, Conrad always took the time to answer any questions, provide updates and express his dissatisfaction with the barrels as well. I’ll post some pics of the test groups that were sent to me, hopefully I can shoot half as good. If anyone is in the market for a quality upper backed by some OutFucking Standing customer service, give Compass Lake a call ! The first two groups were fired before fluting. The last group was shot after fluting to make sure that the fluting process didn’t screw anything up

I’m stuck

I have a 300wsm that’s absolutely the bane of my existence. It started as a Savage Long Range Hunter and now has a new trigger and MDT XRS chassis. No matter what I do it doesn’t shoot under 2”. I’ve tried multiple bullet, powder and primer combinations. Bullets from 150gr lead and copper all the way to 185gr lead and copper bullets. It like everything at least 50 thousandths off the lands.
My son and I each took a deer with it a couple weeks ago, but the shots were within 250 yards.
Im getting single digit SD’s and occasionally putting two bullets I. The same hole, but can’t get a really good group. I’ve had a couple shooters at my range have very similar results.
Factory ammo is worse.
Will moving further off the lands help?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Israeli Combat Engineers Begin to Tackle Hamas Tunnel Network

The Israel Defense Forces on Thursday destroyed a tunnel that penetrated some 200 meters into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, which the army said was dug by the Hamas terror group using techniques meant to make it more difficult to spot by Israel’s detection systems.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is beginning to tackle the challenge of Hamas’s underground tunnel network, in which it hides terrorists, weapons, supplies — and hostages.
There are hundreds of miles of Hamas tunnels underneath Gaza, often built with supplies that were supposed to be used for civilian construction and humanitarian aid. Some tunnels were built through the use of child slave labor, leading to the deaths of Palestinian children. And, as critics have noted, none of the tunnels offer bomb shelters for Palestinian civilians — only terrorists.
The tunnels have already been a challenge for the IDF as it penetrates deeper into Gaza. Overnight, dozens of Hamas terrorists emerged from tunnels to attack Israeli soldiers, who were able to repel the attack without casualties, but only after an intense fight.
The effort to close, collapse, clear out, and eliminate the tunnels will likely define the next stage of the war in Gaza. And it could take months.
The Times of Israel reported Thursday, citing the Walla news website:
The combat engineers are using various types of robots and explosive devices to destroy the tunnels, detonate any booby traps installed by Hamas, and kill terrorists, the report says.
“Maybe at first they were able to harass us, sting us by firing from tunnel exits, but after we established control of the areas, the engineering operation started,” a senior officer in the Southern Command tells Walla.
“We are going to collapse the entrances and the tunnels on them. It will become a death zone. They made a mistake, they chose to be in a place they cannot escape from. They will die in the tunnels,” he said.
John Spencer of the Modern War Institute at West Point recently described the difficulty facing the IDF as it tackles the tunnels:
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are very aware of the presence of Hamas tunnels in Gaza. They often refer to the group’s tunnel systems as the “metro.” The destruction of these tunnel complexes was one of the objectives of previous ground campaigns into Gaza, in 2008 and 2014. In total, there were believed to be over three hundred miles of tunnels in 2021, when Israel claimed to have destroyed sixty miles of tunnels during an eleven-day bombing campaign. Even if those tunnels have not been rebuilt or replaced, that means that it is likely that there remain hundreds of miles of intricate, complex, and deep tunnel infrastructure in Gaza. It is a veritable city underneath the cities on Gaza’s surface.

The IDF has the capability to find, recover hostages from, clear, neutralize, and destroy tunnels. There are specialized units like the IDF Combat Engineering Corps’s Yahalom Unit, an elite commando unit whose soldiers specializes in finding, clearing, and destroying tunnels. The large force includes subordinate units like Sayfan, which trains to handle the threat of unconventional weapons, Samur, which specializes in entering, clearing, and destroying tunnels. The Yahalom is one of the largest units in the world that trains, mans, equips, experiments, and develops new ways to deal with underground warfare. The IDF’s canine unit, Oketz, has dogs trained for operating underground. And the IDF, police, and intelligence services all have special units—like Sayeret Matkal, the Yamam, and others—who share best practices for dealing with terrorists and combatants underground.
The Yahalom and other IDF units also have special equipment specifically developed for tunnels. Tunnel reconnaissance units, for example, use ground and aerial sensors, ground-penetrating radar, drilling equipment, and other systems to find tunnels. There are radios and navigation technologies that to work underground, night-vision goggles that use thermal and other technologies to see in complete darkness, and a suite of remote or wire-controlled flying or crawling robots that can look into and map tunnels without risking soldiers. The IDF also uses virtual reality training simulators that allow soldiers to train for underground warfare even when they aren’t at the physical training sites that include subterranean environments.
Israel can also use airstrikes to destroy tunnels with ground-penetrating bombs. However, it also wants to avoid killing hostages.
The Yahalom (“Diamond”) unit, referred to above, is a key part of Israel’s tunnel-busting operation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the unit last week, calling it the “vanguard” of the Israeli attack on Hamas and praising its readiness for battle.

Walla reports that Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, visited the Yahalom unit on Thursday to offer encouragement.

He said (translated from Hebrew):

I have seen what the unit has done until now, first of all in the fighting on October 7, when a lot of regular and reserve forces arrived, attacked, killed terrorists and acted as combatants on land. I look at the unique capabilities of the Corps of Engineers, we have unique solutions to reach all the tunnels and dismantle them below the surface of the ground, we are ready to do it. You will be the tip of the spear in all the most important points, in forces, units, brigades.

Israel is refusing to allow fuel into Gaza, noting that Hamas hoards fuel in its tunnels and is stealing fuel from hospitals rather than allowing civilians to access fuel that they need for transportation, electricity, heating, and cooking.

Sidearms & Scatterguns Auto vs OU? Where to compromise on field shotgun?

I am yet again, hat in hand searching for firearms advice. This'll be a long one...

Purpose: I'd like get started in upland hunting using a shotgun. I plan to start on rabbit and try a few pheasant or grouse guided hunts. I am looking for a primarily field shotgun to fit this purpose.

I am left-eye dominant and shoot left-handed. I lack range of motion in my left-wrist, straighter stocks are difficult to grip properly, whereas more vertical pistol-grip styles are easier.

I'll likely do some clay shooting in spring/summer, but am focusing on pistol and rifle shooting.

TL;DR: I've put my main questions below in case you don't want to read my novel.

What I'm trying to figure out is:
1. I really wanted an O/U originally without spending Beretta/Browning money. Roll the dice on the best fitting gun (Mossberg) with the worst trigger and questionable Khan manufacturing? Or get the CZ, shoot it long for awhile until I can get it fit?

2. If the cost and hassle of fitting a budget O/U isn't worth it, and I go auto, is it worth getting a left-handed gun? Shooting AR left doesn't bother me, but maybe the ejection path of shot shells is different? Is there a worry of shit flying back into the eyes?

3. Do Hide shotgunners see any clear winners between an Affinity 3, M2 or A300 Ultima? Or better suggestions under $1500?
---
Gun: Originally I wanted an O/U at or below the $1500 mark, 20 ga, 28" barrels. Candidates: Franchi Instinct L, Mossberg Gold Reserve, CZ Drake or Redhead Premier.

I spent about 45 minutes with an experienced shotgunner at a local, well-known shop, and his take on fit was that due to my stature, shoulder width, and general lean frame, I should be able to comfortably shoot shotguns with a neutral cast or slightly cast for a right handed shooter.

Mossberg Gold Reserve:
Pros: Shortest LOP of the OUs, 14", this gun fit me well in LOP, and cheek height, and was the easiest to mount and point. External chokes included. The shop guy said I could maybe adjust it for drop at heel but that it's so close he wouldn't spend the money until I put several hundred rounds through it.

Cons: Trigger is quite stiff, probably over 7 lbs and I've seen reviews with trigger scales showing the same. Made by Khan Arms, reputation seems pretty spotty.

Franchi Instinct L:
Pros: Good reputation, pointed and balanced well, much better trigger than Mossberg. Comb same as Mossberg. Less drop than Mossberg.

Cons: At 14.25" - 14 3/8" LOP mounting the gun and getting a consistent eye-barrel alignment was more difficult, less consistent than Mossberg. Prince of Wales grip is difficult to properly grip.

CZ Drake/Redhead:
Pros: Made in Turkey, allegedly Huglo guns are better than Khan. Better trigger than Mossberg, less good than Franchi. Same drop at heel as Mossberg

Cons: Comb is a touch high compared to Franchi, Mossberg. Longest LOP at 14.5" made mounting difficult and inconsistent.

Initially I was set on the Mossberg Gold Reserve as it seemed to fit and point the best, but the trigger gave me second thoughts and after browsing several forums and reading reviews, a lot of people recommended staying away from the Khan guns, and several mentioned defects with their guns, with some needing returned to Mossberg.

I really wanted to love the Franchi but it's quite difficult to grip properly and they don't offer a more vertical pistol grip, plus it's a touch long.

The CZ is definitely too long but seems the better of the Turkish guns.

I could get it fit, but I don't know how much value there is in spending $400 to fit a $900 gun, plus I don't know anyone to do it or how long it would take.

This led me to looking at 20 ga, 26" autos: Franchi Affinity 3, Benelli M2, Beretta A300.

Affinity 3:
Pros: LIGHT, points fast and well, very easy to mount, comfortable grip. Good trigger. LOP is 14 3/8" yet gave me no issues with mounting. Good comb height. Drop at heel is shim adjustable.
Available left hand but only on base model. Price attractive at $850 for black synthetic, $950 for walnut.

Cons: LOP only adjustable via recoil pad change, to 14". Lefty only available in basic bitch black synthetic.

Benelli M2: Felt very, very similar to the Affinity. Foreend is a bit slimmer, distance to trigger is slightly less. Drop at heel is shim adjustable.

Cons: LOP only adjustable via recoil pad change, to 14". More expensive than Affinity but seems like essentially the same gun.

Beretta A300:
Pros: Felt similar to the other 2, except it didn't seem to mount or point as quickly/easily (weight?). But overall felt good. LOP and drop both shim adjustable, LOP in 1/4" increments.

Cons: Heavy, gas instead of inertia, several reviews warning of mechanical malfunctions. Longer barrel for a woods gun.

To be honest, all the autos I handled (like 6) felt pretty generic in how they mounted and handled, at least statically. The O/U guns each felt pretty different from each other, and the generally longer LOP on the autos did not bother me as much as on the O/US, I don't know why.

What a headache this turned into, lol.

Somebody up there likes me

How many reloaders out there had a lapse in attention to detail while reloading that resulted in, to say the least, an embarrassing moment at the range? My last was a missed powder charge that resulted in a stuck bullet in the throat of my Super Blackhawk. I am amazed how far into the throat of your barrel just a magnum primer will drive it. Of course it locked up the cylinder, and of course I didn't have anything I could drive it down far enough with so I could remove the cylinder and clear it. Finally found someone with a long Phillip's head screwdriver, and managed to clear the throat so I could remove the cylinder.

Needless to say, I pay an even more strict attention to detail after this screw-up. By the way, you can call me a big dummy, I deserve it.

So the truth really is illegal

With all the talk of foreign wars and the looting of our treasury to pay for those foreign wars let’s not forget that here at home the American we all grew up is dead and gone .

Cliff notes version- journalist and publisher both arrested for running a true story AND the real catch the article states that what they did was NOT illegal.
