Savage Kaboom at Local Range

Hey Hide,
I was at the rifle range this morning with my shooting partner. The line had been open for all of ten minutes when a shooter about 30 feet away from us suffered a catastrophic detonation of his rifle, a Savage in 6.5 Creedmoor. I do not know the model. Fortunately for the shooter, he suffered a relatively minor cut to his hand and some cuts to his face, but he was wearing eye pro and was not more seriously injured. Several people were struck with debris from his rifle but none were injured. Some of the debris landed next to my buddy and me. The shooter was using handloads, but could not recall his load - he didn't have it written down and was pretty shaken up by the whole affair.

Pics below. I have been trying to figure out what would cause the rifle to fail in this way. The bore was completely clear, but the barrel was launched about ten feet ahead of his bench. The cartridge case was welded into the chamber but the case head was nowhere to be found. All I can think of is that he used the wrong kind of powder in his handloads (i.e. pistol powder in a rifle case), but that is pure speculation.

Scary moment for sure.

Number of Factory Loads when Breaking In New Rifle?

For shooters without reloading machines: How many different factory loads do you INITIALLY try when breaking in and zeroing a brand new rifle, and how many rounds of each do you initially buy?

It's tempting to buy ammo in bulk for the pricing, but there's always the chance the rifle might not like it.

At least 3-4 different factory loads, perhaps total of 40 rounds each, seems smart, but I'm a newb to precision rifle.

Thanks in advance!

UN doing UN stuff

Looks like the UN is continuing its line of effort to normalize kid piddling.

Lesson-Learned: Primer Storage and Humidity

I stumbled across a few articles about storing primers and how humidity affects them over long durations (aka: "years"). I live in Central Oregon, basically High Desert, and I store my primers on the shelf in my reloading room in my house, which is temp and humidity controlled to about 70° and 35% respectively. Historically I figured that was fine, but what I've read lately, and the amount of money I have invested in my 12,000-ish primers, made me re-think that practice.

So I bought a sealed (waterproof) plastic tub for storage, and a batch of little desiccant packages ... and loaded the tub with my primers and threw in a couple of desiccant packs. Within a few days, my desiccant had turned from "orange" to "dark green" indicating they were saturated. I pulled them out, and threw in two more packs and a few days later, same result.

I'll keep doing this until I get desiccant that doesn't saturate, and then ratchet back to a schedule that works to keep my primer stock nice and dry.

Lesson-Learned: Storing primers in a temperature-and-humidity-controlled environment "on a shelf" ... isn't good enough to keep them dry and reliable for years. I needed a sealed container and desiccant packs to guarantee a "bang" instead of a "click" 5-10 years down the road.

Hope this helps someone else that, like me, thought "on a shelf" was the right place for long-term primer storage.

The most honest criminal I’ve ever seen

Guy killed a child rapist who was his new cell mate, cop asked him why he flushed the shoe strings he strangled him with down the toilet, he says I don’t know, I’m in prison I obviously don’t make good decisions, when he was asked why he did it he said he raped a little girl some crimes just shouldn’t be committed. After he killed him he packed up his stuff because he knew he was going to solitary and got into bed and went to sleep.

Precision Rifle Gear RRS SC DUO

Had no idea RRS had this until this week, these are money to mount accessories to your rails.

Co Witness is surprisingly close to on even with no aiming. I can put a telephone pole in the fov so you don’t have to hunt for it, it’s comfortable at 20x to transition between them.

I will have a video explainer tomorrow

Officers shoot homeowner after going to wrong address

Short long of it, officers responded to a call, went to the wrong address, the homeowner opened the door in the middle of the night with a firearm, the officers shot him on the spot(and killed him).
1) I haven’t seen the body cam footage because they haven’t released it, but I’ve gone to the door a few times after a knock in the middle of the night, and I highly doubt this guy opened the door with the muzzle pointed out, like myself I would bet the gun was at his side.
2) If you can’t verify the address you probably shouldn’t be a police officer.
3) I’m so sick of statements after something like this happens that say what this police chief said after, the normal we feel for the family, then of course the standard we are investigating. What exactly are you investigating that would take longer than watching the video? The facts are not in dispute, your officers were at the wrong address. You already have statements from everyone there, read the statements, watch the 2 or 3 body cam videos and say what happened. I’m well aware they are just trying to put time in between the act and themselves hoping it will go away, but that’s exactly what makes me sick. I suspect they didn’t like the facts the body cam presented, so we get the blanket we feel for the families and now we need a lengthy investigation on something that is apparently obvious.

Ar15 5.56 77smk going transonic

Rifle is shooting 77gr SMK’s at 2783 fps muzzle, I am at sea level. My ballistic app says between 750-800 yards it was going transonic and I guess it didn’t lie. I shot earlier at 790 yards and noticed my 1/2-3/4 moa rifle was struggling to consistently hit a 1.5 moa plate. I kinda thought the 77 SMK would handle the transition better but maybe not. Any other experience especially at sea level? will the 77 gr TMK handle it any better? i noticed it would only gain me about 75 yards at the same velocity.

Teens pretty much take control of Chicago streets

Teens in mass terrorizing who ever is on the streets, stealing what they wish, vandalizing in mass, but these are the ones companies should be forced to hire because the only reason they haven’t gotten ahead is their lack of opportunity due to their skin color or gender. Of course the mayor just basically says it’s not that bad they are misunderstood.

You helped in the bedroom, now I need your help with a grill…

Y’all were right about the bamboo bedsheets…

…so now it’s time for a grill. We are moving out of the worst HOA (AKA base housing…eww I know right? Like totally a poor commune… ew) and I need a new grill.

I was leaning towards a blackstone but I was worried about not getting a good sear on my steaks, which is a weekly event.

Wife was like “just get a large cast iron top for a regular grill” but I dunno. Never had a blackstone and a lot of peeps speak highly of them. Others recommend a smoker but I don’t have the time to get into that (matches and crying about the results of said matches takes up most of my time).

Sidearms & Scatterguns Educate me on this 1911 - Camp Peary?

If anyone has info I’d appreciate it! I was told this is a 1911 built for Camp Peary. It’s on a 1918 Colt frame (per Colt SN lookup). Textured front/back grip, top, and in front of trigger guard. Larger dovetail safety, enlarged magazine release and slide release.

Any information would be great appreciated! Is it actually made for Camp Peary? Who would have built this? Approx. value?
