IDF Mauser M-66 SP

Thought some of you might be interested in my Israeli Defense Forces Mauser M-66 SP sniper rifle in 7.62 x 51 (.308 Winchester). Almost all of these rifles were produced in 1980 on the commercial Mauser M66 short action. There were only 360 of these rifles produced. This particular one was used by the IDF and then sold to Springfield Armory who retailed a small number. I purchased this gun from the collection of actor James Earl Jones. This particular gun has the Nimrod 6x40 scope. It is also shown with a Zeiss Orion 80/I (Fero Z51) Night Vision Rifle Scope.

As a design the M-66 SP, like many sniper rifles traces its roots to a civilian sporting rifle. The action was designed in the 1950’s by Walter Gehman, world record setting German “Master Shooter”, expert ballistician, and small arms engineer. Mauser put Gehman’s creation, known in Germany as the “Gehman-Short Action” into production in 1965. In 1971, German police, like many other law enforcement organizations at the time, began to search for weapons, create tactics, and form units to fight terrorism. The bloody attack by Arab terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics caused Mauser to design a precision sniping version of the M-66. After eight years of development the weapon was ready to be put into production and was designated as the “SP” variant of the M-66. All M-66 SP rifles had to group five shots in a two-centimeter diameter group at 100 meters. Only 360 of these rifles were produced with almost all of them being manufactured in 1980. Mauser suspended production of all M-66 rifles in 1995.

Short Barrel Ranch Rifle Cartridge Choice

I’m looking to rebarrel my old Tikka T3 243 into something to use as my ranch rifle/truck gun to keep in my rig daily. I’d like it to be as short as reasonably possible, and I’d like to use factory ammo just for the cost and convenience in a gun that will be abused and fired a lot. I’ve got a peak44 stock on the way and a Leupold VX3 that’s been waiting to be put on something. The cartridges I’m looking at as of now are 6CM, 25CM, 6.5CM and of course good old 308. Open to other chambering suggestions as well. Duties will include dispatching coyotes, feral hogs, and whitetail if the opportunity presents itself during season. Likely maximum range on live targets will be 400 yards just given the brush and topography of my place. I currently use a 22CM at 22” but I’d like it to be a few inches shorter for getting it out the truck window easily and quickly. I’d build another 22CM shorter but that’s boring. Rifle will be suppressed full time.

Yes I realize I’m giving up performance with factory ammo and a short barrel but this tool isn’t going to be about maximizing performance, it’s about easy handling and being capable enough to be useful. I know there’s plenty of posts about short barrels but I’m looking for experience specifically with factory ammunition. So who’s running factory ammo in a 16-20” rifle, what cartridge and muzzle velocities are you getting? Have you seen good kills on small to medium size game with your setup?

The stupidity in this thread beats the stupidity in the banana thread

Nearly 2.5 MILLION people have signed a petition supporting the ftard illegal alien responsible for the deaths of 3 people when he tried an illegal u-turn on a highway.

I watched the in-cab camera of this guy as he was trying this idiot u-turn. His expression does not change one bit as he realizes that something has just hit his trailer.

Unbelievable

Rifle Scopes March-FX 1-10X24 34mm

I noticed that March has posted the complete specs for these two LPVOs at their website. FFP and Dual Reticles.

My understanding is that all -F and -FX riflescopes have 34mm tubes with 4mm thick walls and that's why the new 1.5-15X42 FFP/DR and the 1-10X24 FFP/DR now have the -FX in their names.

Dual Reticle:

6mm Mini Short Mag

Ok so this is a stretch and a bit of just playing around. While messing about on Chat Gpt I gave it a proper asking it to create the most ballistically superior cartridge that will fit in a mini length action (Howa mini/ CZ 527) in the 6mm bore size. And it came up with one called the 6mm mini short magnum or 6mm msm. These are the theoretical specs it created:
Concept: A radically shortened, fat-body “WSM-style” case (~1.60–1.65" case length) with either a rebated rim (.445" to use Grendel bolt) or a true magnum bolt face (.532") if your mini action can be re-bolted/opened up. Seat 105–115 gr bullets to ≤ 2.30–2.35" COAL.

Sketch specs (target values)

  • Option A (rebated): .445" rim, ~.530" body, 35–40° shoulder
  • Option B (mag face): .532" rim, ~.550" body (bolt/lug thrust rises a lot)
  • Case length: ~1.60–1.65"
  • COAL: ≤ 2.35" (you’ll need custom magazine/follower)
  • Capacity (gross): mid-40s to low-50s gr H₂O after seating
Potential performance (24")

  • 115 gr class: ~3,050–3,150 fps possible on paper
  • 105–110 gr class: ~3,150–3,250 fps

I basically want to know how possible this is, can it be created from an existing cartridge like 243 wssm, and should I build one for shits and gigs instead of a 6mm ARC. My thoughts: if I’m already going to pour money into a full custom rifle with dies and components for the ammo why not go all out? Main downside for me is no factory ammo available, and possible feeding issues. I wouldn’t mind going to a short action but want to avoid just jumping for a 6 prc or a 6 creed just because I want to be difficult on myself.

ZCO527 or 840 for PRS

I have a 6 dasher PRS style build I’m looking to get a scope for. Looking at the ZCO527 and 840. For those that have handled both is there a preference between the 2? Which is “better” overall in your typical shooting magnifications (15x-20x) the lower end doesn’t really matter and the higher end of the 840 is only beneficial on paper or ELR spotting which is cool. Price weight and length are not a factor. Looking at the PRS blog the 527 was more popular but the shooters in the top 10 were all running the 840, I am nowhere near the top shooters but seeing what they run is pretty cool.

Rifle Scopes I think I missed the boat - Nightforce velocity reticle MPVO

1000030403.jpg

I have a thing for BDC reticles. I like how I don't need to think or make any calculations, I just aim accordingly. Add on wind holds, and I get even more aroused. Maybe it's because I'm a dumb Marine and popped my cherry with the ACOG, but it's just who I am.

So I've been looking for the "perfect scope" for one of my rifles, and I ALMOST found it, a Nightforce 2.5-10x32 with a reticle that I didn't even know existed, the Velocity 600. Unfortunately, the one that I found is the high velocity (HV) reticle, and for 308 with a short barrel, I'm looking for the low velocity (LV) one. Several years ago, this would be easy to locate, but now it appears to be discontinued and gone from everywhere. I called Nightforce this morning, and was subtly laughed at for being stupid and not just adopting mils.

Anyway, does anyone know where I can find One of these old NXS 2.5-10x32s with the Velocity 600 LV reticle? I feel like there's got to be some on a shelf somewhere, or some old hunter who uses something more modern nowadays.

Let me know your thoughts!
