Night Vision IR Tools - Easy Way to Heat Up Steel Targets Electrically

I've been playing around with these recently and they've turned out to work pretty well if you want to shoot steel at night and don't want to use a propane torch.

I spent a couple years struggling with shooting steel at night with various LWIR thermal scopes and clip-ons. The main issue that the spot where I often shoot longer range is out in the high desert with lots of rocks and sage brush, and unheated IPSC steel just tends to blend into the background or totally get lost unless I'm right up on it.

For a while I was using propane torches to heat up the steel so they would be easier to pick up with thermal, but it was a bit time consuming, I went through a lot of propane, and it often resulted in uneven temperatures across the target and wouldn't last very long on cold nights. Then I randomly stumbled on these electric heaters that you install onto the steel from IR Tools. It's not something you just put on/take off - you've got to install it with a thermal paste, so the heating element is permanently on there with a wired connection to the power source. They've got a few 12v/24v options to power them, including BA5590 bricks though I think that's too expensive and overkill unless you need them going for a very long time. Instead I got the cable with alligator clips and velcro'd some fairly inexpensive 12v 10Ah lithium batteries to the rear of the plates.

I did some initial testing in the garage and used a Skeet IRL to see how the plate heat up over time.

After just a few minutes the center of the front face of the target was glowing
1742772611861.png

Unheated steel to the left for comparison. By 10 minutes the entire heated plate was a uniform white.

Last night I did some tests with a Voodoo-S and detection was very easy, even out to 800 yards. For shits and giggles I did a comparison through MWIR so you can see unheated vs heated...

The heating is very minimal - they aren't even warm to the touch, but it's plenty for LWIR to get a solid color that stands out from the background. Those 12v batteries kept the targets heated for at least 3 hours in 50F weather.

Seating depth test, grouping interpretation and where do I go from here?

First, I apologize for the poor photo quality—I'm not too focused on presentation when it’s not crucial.
I’m a beginner shooter, this being only the sixth time I’ve shot, so my fundamentals may not be solid. That’s why I decided to test three different seating depths for each group. Based on my results, I see two clear contenders: G2 at 2.15" OAL and G3 at 2.16" OAL. I’m not sure if there’s anything else to be inferred from these groups.
For context, I’m shooting a Howa 1500 in 6.5 Creedmoor, using Berger 140gr Hybrids, CCI 450 primers, and 41.6gr of H4350 powder.
Given these results, which seating depth should I go with? Should I continue to refine in one direction or the other? I was originally loading at 2.115" OAL, but I noticed some inconsistencies at longer distances, which prompted me to run this seating depth test. It seems I was quite a bit off.

Looking to sell my UTB thermal bino. Haven't been coyote hunting much the past few years so this mostly sits in a pelican case. It has the big lens and visible and ir lasers. Pelican case, neck strap, arca Swiss adapter included. Jeep in pic was 20ish yards away, house was 550, rear treeline is 630. $7250 shipped obo20240704_101222.jpg20240704_104116.jpg20240704_104243.jpg20240704_103901.jpg20240704_104819.jpg

Thinking of rolling the dice on an Echo Timberwolf

Need a new saw. I have a late 80's 038 probably made in Germany (was my dad's). Time to let it sit on a shelf and take up space. Work we use newer Stihls, the high end saws are nice. The mid range take a dump constantly (throttles break all the time).

Looking at the Echo 620P. Would be used mostly for felling/bucking around the farm, might occasionally take on some extra work felling with a neighbor to feed his mill. 620P should be American made.

Most of my reading says they are a good tool. Not quite a pro saw but better than consumer (rebuildable, light weight/power). Compared to here, most places I have read do not suggest buying a Stihl or a Husky. Jonserd is nice, but no local dealers/parts suppliers. We have Stihl, and Echo here and TSC sells the cheaper Huskys.

Sig MCX 9” 300 blackout pistol with SD handguard and complete 16” 5.56 upper. Approximately 200 rounds on each barrel. No pictured accessories included in price. (Would’ve removed accessories for pics, but red dot and laser are zero’d so if it doesn’t sell, I don’t want to sight it in again!)

New to forum + New rifle build

Hello all,

I’ve just joined the forum and I'm seeking some feedback on my latest build. I got a lot of ideas from viewing posts here so I thought I'd make an account and see what people thought of my own build.

Originally I really wanted to build a M24/M24A2 but as parts are becoming increasingly scarce, and next to impossible to source where I am, I opted for something that looks similar but was far more practical.

I was going for a Remington 700 Police look, with a different chambering and barrel length to better suit my needs.

The rifle is primarily for pest control, and built to be able to get in and out of vehicles without hassle.

I’m using Federal Premium 69gr BTHP in it at the moment, which I am aware is far from ideal for killing things, but I assure you when I hit them the head, the varmints that I am aiming at cannot tell you the difference.

The entire rifle is built upon a Remington 700 SPS Tactical 16.5” .223 1-8 barreled action, and the parts list is as follows:
  • Butler Creek Flip Up Lens Caps
  • Leupold MK4 3.5-10x40 LR/T M1
  • Talley 0MOA Picatinny Rail
  • TPS TSR 30mm S-Low Rings
  • Surefire SOCOM Muzzle Brake
  • Timney Elite Hunter Trigger
  • KRG Bolt Lift SV
  • HS Precision PST-012 Stock
  • Badger Ordnance M4 Floorplate
  • Triad Tactical Stock Pack
  • SAP Two Round Holder
  • Harris 6-9” S-BRM Bipod
  • KMW Pod-Loc Lever
  • Outdoor Connection Talon Swivel
  • TIS Slip Cuff Precision Rifle Sling

WTB Colt raised or stamped "C" upper receiver

Looking for a stamped or raised "C" Colt upper receiver.
Rifle is a 2009 inspired build. So stuff previous to that, like C + AF, C + cerro, C + square are all good. (Lemme know if there's others, I'm a noob).
Would prefer if it has FA + dust cover installed, and if it doesn't look like it went through a washing machine with rocks :)

Feel free to message or post with what version you've got and we can discuss.

Thanks!

Gunsmithing I need help choosing BEST 300 Blackout in 10.5

Well while doing searches I run across either really old threads or barrels that no longer are made. I had my mind set on a Rainier Arms Ultra Match but it is only offered in 16" now. I then thought of Noveske but read some people that said for the money they are nothing to write home about. Not really interested in the cheaper brands (BA and Faxon). Centurion is a thought... I see WOA doesn't make a 300 Blackout barrel.

Armaspec AR-10 Stealth Recoil Spring Problems

So I am running a rifle length buffer, with the Armaspec AR10 Stealth Recoil Spring and spacer. I was having problems with it not going all the way into battery or maybe it went in and bounced out!? But I was getting lite primer strikes randomly. I tried a different bolt, same problem. I removed the buffer retainer pin to allow it to put more pressure on the BCG, same problem. I know you can get shims, but the buffer actually sticks out further than the stock buffer, so it shouldn't need shimmed. Any idea what is going on? FYI when I put the stock buffer and flat wire spring into the rifle, it runs like a champ!

"Long Action" Semi-Auto Rifles - What's the consensus?

Looking for any discussion/feedback on the "long action" semi-auto rifle platforms. Specifically, how are they performing? This could apply to several "long action" calibers, not just .300 WM. The intent is NOT to debate the applications for these rifles.

Some of those platforms include:

Are there other "long action" semi-auto rifle platforms out there?

What has been your experiences, good or bad, with any of the "long action" semi-auto rifle platforms?

I have been doing my best to research this topic, but my results have been pretty hit & miss. I have found information, but I am questioning the consistency and validity of much of it.

Thanks in advance!

Accessories New Viper Barrel Vise - The Python!

The great folks at Viper have given me the opportunity to release their new barrel vise! This vise is an improvement on the older model featuring the following -

- Half the thickness for use on carbon fiber barrels.

- Multi-faceted contact area to provide more surface contact on your barrel.

- Counterbored bolt holes to allow tilting for tapered barrels.

- REMOVABLE Grade 8 bolts, so should they strip or round off, you can knock them out and replace them.

- Same footprint as the old vise, so no need to drill more mounting holes if you’re changing vises.

These are certainly a step up from the previous generation. Viper has been gracious enough to give us the first batch, and I’d love to get this in your hands!!

$95 + $5 shipping. Send me a message to order or order from our website -

HELP! Point of Impact Doesn't Match Ballistic Calculator (@ Mid-Range)

Hi all,

I've been a lurker on-and-off for these forums for several years now, but I've run into a conundrum that's convinced me to make an account and ask for some help. I recently took my hunting rifle, a 300 Win Mag, out to the range to check the zero and do some mid-range trajectory validation. The weapon is currently averaging 3/4" groups with my handloads, which I am satisfied with for how difficult it is to shoot such a light gun without any of the conveniences of my target rifle setup. After verifying that it was zeroed at 100 yards, I shot at a 10" steel plate that I had set up at 500 yards (verified with a Leica Rangefinder), and missed it entirely. There was no wind on the range, and I couldn't see any splash from the sides or above the plate, so i assumed it hit low and was obstructed by the mound I had placed the target on. I prepared a firing solution using both Hornady's 4DOF calculator as well as my Kestrel 5700 with Applied Ballistics before coming to the range, and double checked my scope turret to verify I had dialed 7.5 MOA. Firing again, half-way between center and the top of the plate, and the bullet impacted the very bottom edge of the plate. Today, I took my rifle out to the range and performed the same task, with the EXACT same results. The rifle is properly zeroed at 100 yards, and impacting over 1 MOA low at 500 yards. I simply cannot understand what is causing this, because I have done everything I can think of to eliminate unknowns and reduce the odds of equipment failure. I am loath to waste expensive powder, bullets, brass, and carefully reloaded ammo blindly. By my understanding, the only way for this to be (assuming firing system is not to blame) is that my velocity is somehow ~160 fps slower than my LabRadar and Garmin are measuring, or I have the WORST batch of Berger 215 Hybrids known to man, performing at .180 G7 BC instead of the advertised .354 G7 BC. Any ideas?

Thanks

Environmental Conditions on both range days:
Elevation: 5500 feet
Station Pressure: 24.42 inHG
Temp: 51 F
Wind: 0-1 MPH from 2 O'clock
Humidity: 20%
Angle of Fire: ~3 degrees? (Range is Exceptionally Flat)

Equipment and Shot Conditions:
Rifle: Christensen Arms Ridgeline Titanium chambered in 300 Winchester Magnum (1:10 Twist, unsuppressed)
Scope: Nightforce SHV 5-20x56 FFP on Nightforce Steel Base and Seekins Precision Rings (Scope Height @ 1.95")
Ammo: Handloads; Peterson 300 WM Long Brass, 79.0 gr VVN570, Berger 215gr Hybrid Target Bullets
Muzzle Velocity: 2970 FPS, ES: 21 fps (verified by LabRadar during load development and Garmin Chrono at both range trips)

TL;DR: Gun shoots 3/4" groups from cold-bore, cold-shooter regularly at 100 yards. Gun shoots ~1.1 MOA lower than predicted at 500 yards. Equipment and Ammo very unlikely to be at fault, verified firing solution with Hornady 4DOF and Kestrel w/ Applied Ballistics, verified zero and velocity every range trip. Help .

New Purchase?

Hey Guys..

I'm looking to pick another rifle but I'm running low on ideas. Precision and reliability are still the main priorities, but I'm open to any ideas and was hoping y'all may know something I don't.

Here is a list of what I already own or have already done extensive testing on, also a few I'm not interested in at all.

Right now the only Large Frame rifle I can think of that would be worth buying is the Geissele MRGG. For a Small Frame the RD-15 LPR, but if I were to buy the LPR I'd probably pull the .223 Proof Research SS barrel and install a 18" - 20" Bartlein in 6ARC.
