Help me Configure a JP SCI-20.

I have been playing around with JPs rilfe builder and I am planning on ordering a SCI-20 in .223.

The two biggest things I cant make my mind up on is barrel length and stock.

I'm stuck between 16/18/20inch

Its either the UBR or ?????????

More than likely wont get shot much past 6-700. Really want just a fun range gun and something to try PRS gas gun with.

Pitting in the chamber, did I do it?

IMG_4050.jpeg

This is my PRS barrel it’s a Bartlein and I’m sure it’s something I did and not the barrel. I’m looking to isolate so I don’t do it again. Barrel has about 1k rounds on it shot a few matches. For the most part I clean after shooting. Recently switched to Thoro clean. Prior to was using Iosso Triple action and bore paste, accompanied with wipe out patch out. I don’t think it’s the Thoro clean, but it is a newer product. Once I’m done cleaning I run a patch of alcohol followed by a few dry patches.

If I only fire a few rounds 30 or less I won’t clean, or if I’m using it for hunting predators on my property I’ll leave it fouled only taken a shot once a week or two weeks.

Im wondering if my last hunt caused it. It was about 20degrees out and I was out with my rifle for about 2hours. I brought the rifle and all my gear back into my 68 degree house. I am thinking condensation in the barrel then sitting for a week and a half may be the culprit.
I discovered after going to load a round and take a shot. I had trouble closing the bolt but then it closed. After firing the round I had a super sticky bolt. I took a video of the bore camera images. Did some before and after a very light cleaning. Pitting looked way worse prior to cleaning. I thought a chunk was missing.
I reached out to gun smith. He asked how the brass looked and it was fine. So I’m going to shoot a few rounds to see how it is.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Help! 7 PRC DBM and AICS Mag Vertical Travel/Feed Issues

I'm having issues with the amount of vertical play I'm getting with my AICS magazines. The mag feeds just fine if it's sitting anywhere in between the very bottom or very top positions of insertion. I've look around and it seems this much free travel up and down is normal but I just can't wrap my head around that.

- Action - Zermatt Origin LA - which comes with Remington style feed lips. Capable of accepting AICS Long, CIP, and CIP+ length bottom metal and magazines.
- Cartridge - 7PRC
- Bottom Metal - Grayboe M5 DBM 'Long' 3.715"
- Magazine - Accurate Mag 5rd 3.715" (300win mag length)
- Stock - McMillan Game Warden LR - Inlet for Rem 700 Long Action clones - Pillars installed

With a loaded magazine and the bolt open, there is approximately 0.25" of vertical travel between the magazine bottom position where it is stopped by the mag catch, and the top position where the top of the magazine makes contact with the bottom of the action/action feed lips. The amount of vertical play strikes me as excessive and seems like it would be temperamental with regards to feeding, and no surprise, it is.

With the magazine in the absolute downward position the bullet tips gets pressed into the vertical portion of the action just below the feed ramp and will feed no further. This might be fixed with some tweaking of the front portion of the magazine feed lips. All of the mag tuning videos I've seen are for short action mags and suggest a consistent gap of 0.4". My mag body has a noticeable taper front to back and I can't seem to find any recommended spacing for the 7PRC/long action AICS Mags.

With the magazine pressed all the way upward the bolt gets stopped by (I believe) the back of the magazine. It might be the back of the feed lips. I will try and verify. I've seen suggestions to shim the bottom of my bottom metal to limit the amount of mag insertion, but that will simply exacerbate the problem described above where the round feeds too low and is being driven straight into the vertical face of the action. I've also seen comments that the weight of a loaded mag will hold the mag low enough to keep from being over inserted, however what happens after I fire 4 rounds and now I have a mostly unloaded mag?

My next step is to reach out to MDT and see if their adjustable mag catch could be modified to fit into my Grayboe bottom metal. Any other suggestions appreciated!

Perhaps it's the engineer in me, but I just can't figure out the sloppiness and excessive vertical play that seems to be considered acceptable in this system. Having a rock bottom stopping point only on the bottom direction of travel with no purpose driven limit at the top seems like a system destined for failure.

Thanks to all for your time and insight!

6mm arc load question Hornady vs Sierra

Just getting into reloading. My first attempt is loading some stuff up for my coyote rig.

Gas gun
6mm arc
70gr sierra blitzkings
Xterminator powder

Looking over the data between Hornady and Sierra I had a question on max load range I was hoping some more experienced guys can help me on.

Hornady list 32gr max charge for 65 gr and 30.4gr for a 75gr. In comparison Sierra list 27.7. The oal of the blitzking falls between the 65 and 75gr vmax.

Any reasons for the conservative numbers from sierra?

Night Vision Basic Thermal Clip ON Q's.

Hey guys,

I've got some basic questions that my google fu is weak on. I'm just going to go ahead and list my questions in no particular order. Any help would be appreciated. These questions are only applicable to Thermal as that is what I am interested in.

1. Do you need an illuminated reticle to use with a clip on? I'm a little confused as to how visible the reticle will be without illumination overlaid on a digital screen.

2. Obviously this is clip on dependent and seemingly subjective but how much low end magnification can you get away with using a clip on? I was hoping to be able to use a Mk5 3.6-18. I'd rather not buy an LPVO if I can avoid it. By the same token, if say my optic is 3.6 on the low end, will this be similar to listed native magnifications on thermal scopes, ie "base mag of 2X". Would 3.6 effectively be my "base mag"?

3. To the best of my understanding, there are only a few commercial grade clip ons that supposedly don't require collimation. The Sig offering and I believe the new Armasight clip on. Am I missing any?

4. RE: Zeroing profiles and collimation. Lets say you have four guns and four zero profiles. Do you have to collimate the optic each time you place it onto a different platform and switch zero profiles or is that somehow saved within the zero profile?

I think that about covers my questions for now. If I think of anymore i'll add em!

Thanks guys!

Rifle Scopes What is your favorite rifle scope?

As the title says, I am curious what optics folks are enjoying and why? There are no wrong answers, be as specific or as vague as you like. It does not matter if you have a cardboard tube with toothpicks for a reticle, a $75 Walmart special or a $3000+ S&B.

I really enjoy this Leupold Mark 4 2.5-8 that has been mounted on my hunting rifle for years. The magnification range is perfect for Elk hunting in my corner of Washington and the scope just looks cool to me. I was able to get the optic for a great price when I was in the military and it has always been a performer. I removed the scope from the rifle(sent off for a new barrel install) and after 5 minutes with a scrubby pad and some 409 it looks nearly new.
