Don't agree with the position that it is not good as 6.5x284. I'm finding it more consistent and better barrel life. I'm pushing a 140 Berger VLD at just a hair under 3000 fps and while I have room to push it even faster there is no need.
Forgot about those rules... If you decide to go with a range officer and need those parts, I have the spur-type hammer, as well as the GI type thumb and grip safeties to meet EIC rules that you can have for the cost of a small priority mail box shipping to you. ($6). Let me know.
You don't want night sights for an EIC match. You need the target (Bomar type) sights that come on the Springfield Armory Range Officer. Get one and you have a good platform to build upon as your skills increase. BTW they can be had for $700-$750 so spend the rest on ammo or reloading...
Consider going in a different direction and give some thought to a long action rifle and the 6.5x55 GWI. I've been shooting it for a couple years and it pretty much outclasses the SA 6.5's in all ways. Here is a thread to get you started...
Heading off to precision rifle course this summer and one of the needed pieces of equipment is a good sling for some of the position shooting. I need some recommendations. Rifle to be used for that part of the course is 13lb, 700SA 308 in one of Kyle's Element Chassis.
Here is the one to get. It's not cheap but the quality is second to none. 34mm Kit Kokopelli Products 3820 Foothill Rd. Kalispell MT 59901 (406) 755-3220 Kokopelliproducts.com John is the owner and manufacturer. Great guy to deal with.
If you have never pulled the bolt down and cleaned it then that is most likely the problem. Pull it down, degrease it, dry it, lightly put some high quality lube on it that won't be impacted by cold temps and you will be good to go.
Don't go with the 6.5x55 in a SA. You will not be able to get the OAL you need with the 140 class bullets. That round needs a LA for a proper home. If you want a 6.5mm on that platform then go with a 260 or a 6.5 Creedmoor.
