United Nations Says Turning Off Poor Detroiters' Water Violates Human Rights

Hmmmm, I think the problem would be easily solved by all those poor people just going to the river and boiling the water. Problem solved. Check the photos of Detroit, a HUGE river right down the middle. No water issue at all, and best of all ITS FREE!

Several went and paid the bill, several went to make arrangements to pay the bill, so SHUT THEM DOWN, or let them use river water

We already give them food stamps so they can afford Newports, Nikes, Rims, Blunts and weed. We might as well give them free water to wash clothes and Cadillacs. They drink 40's not water.

Say, the other thread got closed but seeing as how some people brought it up as a potential problem, I hope yall remember the movie "Act of Valor". The one that had SEALs acting in it. That whole movie was basically about Radical Muslims coming over the border using Mexican drug cartel networks. Personally I dont think its out of the realm of possibility at all. I just hope we would be able to stop them at the door, as it happened in the movie, rather than the alternative.

*sigh*
I'm getting sick and tired of people thinking that "rights" are things people should get after they are taken from other people....
Rights are things that are unalienable and only bring MORE personal responsibility, not less. You DON'T have a right to health care. You DON'T have a right to food. You DON'T have a right to water. You DO have the right to get a job and work for the money to PAY for food, health care, and water! And if you don't exercise that right, then you better be ready to reap the consequences of your choice.

Especially the part about "Rights bringing MORE personable responsibility, not less."

Yeah, boooooy!

Meanwhile, somewhere right around the corner ...

WKYT Investigates: Taxpayer money and Kentucky's 'Pop Train'

Welfare fraud hotline lights up after WKYT 'Pop Train' investigation

Funny, they don't look like stereotypical Newport smokers to me.

Detroit... I guess you blew through all that "Obama money" from his "secret stash" huh? That place is the future of California, Chicago and New York.

Simple solution: Charge those that earn a living double or triple if necessary, thus allowing those that do not work, will not work, have never worked and have no intention of every earning an honest dollar, to get theirs for no charge. Or, we could up the food stamps/person thus allowing them to buy all the bottled (and delivered) water they want! As it could be called a "health issue" perhaps Obama Care could start paying for it.

The issue here is one city that has seen corruption to it's highest level where greed, and No one wanting to work for what they receive killed what was once a place of our highest Automotive Technology. Unionism, Socialism, and the amount of people who did not work vs those who did work went so far out of balance to cause the city's demise. The Auto business fell to poor levels due to unions demanding far too much for the worker, while sitting back and raking in anything they could grab for themselves at the highest levels. These unions were not for the workers, they were for the union leaderships own greed. That greed fell the entire automotive industry.
The denizens of Detroit(I cannot use citizen as that implies work ethic for the common betterment of friend, family, and community, along with a higher moral standing) have held out their hands for rent, food, material goods, cell phones with service, and anything they could get with demands upon the working middle class, as well as the working poor. The wealthy do not account for such things because they were the first who were smart enough to leave so they would not be pouring their earned finances into the hands of those who did not work. The city then demanded a higher tribute from all who resided and had income until all who had income became smart enough to leave, thus, those with their hands out, and the city itself failed both morally, and financially.

The United Nations may cry and scream human rights, but this is the USA. Would they be so bold to bring in military support equipment, foreign troops, march upon Detroit and yell for someone to fix it(The taxpayers will scream hell no). Is this the reason some have seen UN marked vehicles being transported elsewhere? Are the tin hat wearing theorists correct in their assumptions?

Will the current administration allow interference from the UN or other foreign interests in Detroit? if so, where next? Is this the beginning of a slippery slope?

Definitely something to think about to be sure. Until then, or when it all goes down, I have only one word:

"Wolverines!"

Yep, they can afford their cigarettes, booze, drugs-etc, TV, internet, get high priced food items with food stamps but can't afford water, ha. The government has turned that whole welfare system into one big nightmare.

Yep.

Just "The Grasshopper and the Ant" being rewritten for a happy ending. Sad they knew how that worked 2,000 years ago. Whats scary is the new authors know what they are doing.

Speaking of Muslims and all you said, this past week, in Los Vegas, Somali's were found in a hotel room. Guess just how they all got here?? Guess what their beliefs were??? Look it up online! I think the other Thread got closed because "cops ignoring the U.S. Constitution got mentioned, or some cops I should say."

No doubt, have you seen the movie? Its pretty damn awesome. Way better than most of the stuff put out by Hollywood.

The thing is, we obviously have the people that can go toe-to-toe with those guys while outnumbered 5:1 and still come out on top, but the question is whether our intelligence community will be up to snuff on stopping it?

Your statement explains all, "pawprint, that ignorance is too far out of my lane to actually want comment on." May I suggest when discussing "ignorance" you at least use correct grammar!!!! Perhaps you've been without free water, or the like.

Why is it when there is a conflict like Syria etc.. The UN pulls their dicks and takes its time IF they even get involved ? BUT something happens in the USA from water concerns to gun control they are the first ones to bail in and try and run our business ! Screw them .,,,

I worked in the auto industry for many years, and I am 100% positive that the main reason the auto industry has suffered is poor management. If it was not for the Japanese selling reliable, cost affordable cars in the US, Detroit would still be putting out junk. Detroit management, for the most part, was completely out of touch of what the US needed, and out of touch of how to do it. The Union bosses may be corrupt, but probably on about the same level as the Big 3 management.

We need the competition from foreign auto makers to keep our companies efficient. If Detroit big 3 management sold their fleet of private jets, I would start to believe that they might have a clue about how to run a business.

As to Detroit government, well Kwame is in prison, so that is a good start.

I had to work for everything I have or services I get from what I did work for. Guess I was the stupid one for working and saving all my life, but I will have the last laugh,..........
I hope the UN does try to enforce the water issue, I R-E-A-L-L-Y-----D-O.
The UN will be an invading force by all accounts, I/we, don't care what papers were signed by who, or when.

Pure Genius: How Dean Kamen's Invention Could Bring Clean Water To Millions | Popular Science

What's sad is that we find ourselves becoming a Second World nation at our crumbling edges. It isn't just Detroit. It's places like Camden, NJ, and Rochester, NY, too. We're coming up with inventive solutions for others' woes, when in fact we're beginning to need them for ourselves.

Interesting little toy he made. I question the validity of 'enough water for 300 people' though. His machine makes about 2.3L per person, maybe enough to drink and survive, but little for cooking or other unless community is agreeable. Of course you have never fallen ;)

I do agree with the fact that they need to pay for the water. Water treatment is a utility and it cost money to provide that service if I don't pay my bill they shut mine off. In smaller countrys all over the world people just use the local river why is that unacceptable in the case of america?

I will say that the problem in Detroit go's beyond people being lazy. Corruption on the higher level is what has destroyed that city its easy to say they need to get a job but when there are just no jobs to be had it does not matter if there lazy or not they just wont have work. So they turn to the only economical solution left to bring money in. CRIME! because there is no government red tape to starting that business no real overhead and its the only solid choice left. With that brigs violence and an entire host of other problems. So instead of throwing welfare money at them why don't we throw education at them. Why don't we create a friendly environment for small business and industry. Im not saying GIVE THEM A HAND OUT. I'm saying give them hope and something to look forward to rite now they see no end hopelessness.

I was in Detroit in 1995 when the news paper Union went on strike so I flew in a s a Scab. I did the job that they refused to do because they weren't making enough money. I was making about 80% of what the regular workers were making and it was about $1,500 a week. I was blown away that that was not enough money for them. I was fresh out of high school and could never imagined making any where near that and these people were complaining about it.. Was that the peoples fault of the fault of the Union leader for filling there heads with that garbage.?

You are right. The average American uses 138,000 liters a year. So this machine would supply 3.5 Americans, annual water use.
"By USGS calculations, overall 2005 U.S. average residential water consumption was 98 gpcd. " so 100 gall /day in 2005.

You are a bit naive in your post.....

1. Crime is not a fall back position for unemployment. ...if your skills are not marketable in your local econony, get new skills or move to a different economy. ...don't try to justify criminal behavior like that.....plenty of people live through tough times without resorting to that....read a little history. ..our military is always hiring.

2. We are already educating them. Detroit has public schools. ..taxpayers pay for them....knowledge and skills are there, free for the taking..
3. The union leaders didn't fill their heads with anything....the union leaders told them what they wanted to hear....and they fell victim to thier own greed.

I see many illegals come into my area with no education, can't speak English, no money and get by pretty well without relying on the govt. to help them. They rent homes/apartments pay electric bills and water bills and most are driving pretty nice cars. Finding work is not a problem if you "WANT" to work. The problem is that most of the "WANT" has been weened out of the population.
On a second note. I saw that a city in the great advanced state that borders the Pacific Ocean has decided that the pot shops should give away 2% of their pot to the poor and homeless that can't afford it.

Somethings wrong with this picture!! I know straight out of college engineers that only make $800 week starting off!!! They were complaining about $1,500 a week??? Hell, I have never made that in my life!! Them people deserve the suffering that their greedy asses may get!! Don't just blame it on the Union's, because in the end, the people could have opened their eye's and looked around at all the people really suffering, that hope and pray daily for a job and money like that!! What's wrong with city folks!!!!???????

that's because they don't pay taxes, or medical bills. They can buy a car under there fake identification but most of the time they dont pay for insurance on there cars. so even if they are making a fraction of what a normal person is making it is still in most cases more take home money. Your also not looking at the current immigration trend http://www.washingtonpost.com/local...s-than-enter/2012/04/23/gIQApyiDdT_story.html the ones that are pulling that off are about 1% of the immigrants and in most cases its just because of luck. America use to be the land of opportunity. Not any more.

Whats naive about drugs being a viable source for income? Your born into a hopeless situation due to no fault of your own. Given no opportunity at a real education you don't have money or means to move out of your current situation. So what are your options? I'm just curious... I don't agree with hand outs AT ALL!! but we are supposedly the the #1 country in the world yet we are not even in the top 15 with our education. We would rather give people money so that they just have no desire or reason to better there situation. If your only option is minimum wadge or the opportunity to make as much money as you want standing on a street corner the choice is obvious. its pretty much a no brainier.

how about legalize pot. and prostitution. tax it and roll all the tax dollars from those 2 sources directly into education. that alone would create 1000's of job opportunity. there doing it any ways you will never stop it so why not make it legitimate and use it as a source of revenue.

He's producing something for societies that don't uniformly enjoy the niceties of flush toilets and bottled, imported water from Fijian wells. I'm sure, if we were to cleave to Third World standards of both consumption and waste, that Kamen's "toys" might go a bit further.

In the 1930s this wasnt the result for our cities in the same dire straights. When the dust bowl conditions wiped out the Midwest this was not the solution for those people.

They pulled on their boots and moved to greener pastures. Silicon Valley is likely the result of that mass migration.

What changed?

We now have a social welfare system that keeps people locked into these dying spaces. They sit in the decaying rubble of their post industrial shit holes with their mouths wide open, looking skyward for Uncle Sam to come vomit in their gaping maws.

The short sighted view is that we are wasting tax money. I am more concerned we have dampened the ambition of necessity. By keeping people locked into subsistence depression we may be preventing the next boom town created by our internal migration. North Dakota has jobs for anyone seeking. A kids dream to become an entrepreneur is lost when he is anchored to a shithole by welfare dependence.

Than lets talk how this creates inflation. How do our manufacturing/manual labor businesses compete against a government that in some cases provides subsistence to the tune of $50-$60 K a year to sit on the couch? They cant, so they resort to illegals. We end up paying the price on April 15 and everytime we go to the grocery store or buy shit from China.

Unintended consequences?

I agree with a lot of your post. But I will say that the Washington Post article is skewed with it's stats. I saw a big decrease in the Hispanic population around the 08 economic situation. It continued thru '11. But since then the population has returned and is as high or higher than it was in "08. They also use the term of Mexican immigrants in their stats. If they took the number of Hispanics from Central America I don't think their numbers will stand up to the articles precipice. I believe the term is OTM"s, other than Mexicans, are the growing populace in this region.
The state of TN does not have an income tax that is paid on wages earned. We have a high sales tax tho, 9.75% in my area. Each county has authority to add up a little to the state mandatory. So some are close to 9.8%. So the ones living here are paying taxes when they shop at Wally world. The ones that rent don't have to pay property tax but the land owner is paying it. The ones I know that have had "Legals" sign and purchase houses for them are paying the taxes. The ones that use false papers to get employment are having Federal tax withheld, no way around this. It was a practice for them to claim married and 8 dependents so the minimum was withheld but that is no longer being allowed by the companies that don't want to run afoul of the Employment Agency. They need proof of dependents. I will agree they do scam the medical insurance and the white trash have learned to do the same. So few are caught and the punishment is no deterent. My wife does the payroll for a large Corporation in the area and has seen it. Most don't care till they have their anchor baby then they get the insurance properly, if you know what I mean. We call the auto insurance they have H&R, hit and run. It sucks because we know who pays then. The situation here is a no win. Employment is available but for a company to be profitable with all the overhead and regulations the wages are low, for unskilled labor. I have had people asking me for a job and have referred them to the company my wife works for. When I tell them what starting pay is the usual response is "I am making that doing nothing. Why go work for 40 hours a week.". I usually tell them PRIDE.
I agree that the corner job is an easy out for the inner city kid with what seems like a hopeless situation. But I don't think that taxing drugs and prostitution will ever put a dent in the problem. I have yet to see where throwing money at any problem has solved it. If you have please tell me. I told my wife almost 30 years ago that we will live in a have and have not country before we die. She laughed. At the time I was a PFC in the Marines and she was a college student. The day NAFTA was signed she said that I may have been right. On the ground of being slapped with the hammer I will only elaborate in a PM. Either way I did get a good laugh with the "water stamps". We will have to add "Pot Stamps" to the list in a short while.

I can remember cleaning fish from the Detoilet river as a kid, mercury was in most, so as far as I'm concerned river water is just fine for them.

you can PM me.

I never suggested throwing money at it that's a horrible solution. My suggestion of legalizing pot and prostitution is one of almost necessity at this point. Both are legal in different states and it does not 100% get rid of the illegal activity. The city is in the state it is in because of corruption. From the top down the poor people did not destroy that city. what I am saying is if they want to change the economic Statius of that city they need to start to think out side the box. Instead of giving out hand outs put the money into the school system. Hire good teachers pay them well give kids free lunch and breakfast. make school a place where they want to go to get away from the nightmare at home. Create incentives for both small and large business that will draw them to that city. What they are doing now is obviously not working and I tend to think in the line of Give them a fish and the will eat today teach them to fish and they will never be hungry. All we are doing rite now is giving them a fish.

I watched a documentary the other day. most of the documentary I sat there and rolled my eyes but there were some things in it that just made all the sense in the world.. The documentary was. The house I live in. I'm going to miss quote the guy but ill try my best here. one of the guys said that the way we solve problems like this today. Is like a doctor saying you have pneumonia so if we suppress your cough it will go away. We don't treat the real problems we treat the symptoms/results of the problem

Unfortunately corruption is systemic and impossible to get rid of.

My suggestion of legalizing pot and prostitution is one of almost necessity at this point.

If we legalize the selling of Pussy, all women will begin to thing it's worth more than what we give them. I mean really, it's already being traded as a commodity, used as a reward, traded fro services, and in some cases given away for free(I LOVE FREE). If it becomes legal to SELL, all this is lost because the purchase price will rise until the only one we can get is the free one, and I'm too damn old to go chasing those!

Yeah but like all commodity sits only worth what some one is willing to pay. No one will pay Ferrari prices for a yugo. Te state could Fix up an abandoned building on each of the for corners of the city. Provide security at the door and charge a room fee. Day, week, month. No need to tax them because it's a cash buisness just build that into the room cost. They have to renew there license once a month in order to use teh buildings. Renewing the license requires an STD test that they pay for. They can set thee own price. They will be competitive with each other

Id imagine the prices would change through the day.

Who is going to pay first opening prices (no pun intended) at closing time?

You wouldn't happen to be a "Pimp" would you, eli polite??

no pimp! married for 16 years now. I just don't see the need make something illegal that you will never get rid of why pay fighting it when you can make money on something that is just going to happen. Speaking of pimps you would get rid of them to. take some of those abandoned building and retro fit them to be grow buildings.. Make it so
that if your a legal grower with a licence to grow you have to use space owned by the state in these abandoned buildings. The state could provide the security witch would be built int the rent.. That would almost eliminate robbery's by hoodlums. The guards could be state police. People fresh out of the academy or close to retirement or retired cops just looking for extra cash. Any idea is better than what they have going on now

One of the problems in Detroit that would have to be overcome, if the state/township were to legalize prostitution, would be the hooker union. This wouldn't be a pick a choose type operation, but rather the senior hookers would be the only ones that could work first etc.. The old scuzzy, ragged out 70 year old syphilis bag would have to go first, as she's been a whore longer than any of the others. Just saying....
