Gunsmithing DO NOT USE VIBRATITE HOT LOCK

Be warned, don’t use this shit if you ever want your muzzle device to come off. It was installed per their instructions and removed per their instructions with extended soaking time and it took half of the threads with it.

After 2 days of soaking in water (how they say to remove it) I called vibratite because the fucker wouldn’t budge and spoke to a lady there. I told her that I had soaked it and it wasn’t coming off and asked if there was a solvent I could use.

I was advised that soaking in warm water was what dissolved it and that it shouldn’t take long but to keep swapping the water out for warm and to also tap on the muzzle device with a hammer. The lady also said the only person that couldn’t get one off took it to a gunsmith and it was locked on because they used a spacer shim and said the spacer shims are what would lock it… my ass.

So I soaked it two more days and this was the result when it finally came off.

I’m going to call them tomorrow and see what they have to say.

*UPDATE*

I've spoken to Vibratite and Larue. I spoke to the same lady at vibratite who I guess is the main contact point. I told her I followed her instructions for two whole days of soaking and periodically swapping out with warm water and tapping it with a hammer, and that it came off but the threads came with it. She said this is unheard of and will need to forward this to her chemists to find out what happened (probably what to blame it on to deny responsibility). I'll follow up with their response but it likely won't be until next week.

Larue gave me as much info about the barrel steel as they could for me to forward to vibratite and also said they've seen the same thing happen with rockset and is partially why they stopped using it and use a non ceramic loctite product now. This failure was not at any fault of them or their barrel but they said if I don't get anywhere with vibratite that they would replace the barrel at a reduced cost which I think is very generous.

PRS Build Advice from Blueprinted Custom Remington Model 7

Hi guys.

I have a custom Model 7 I had built several years ago, and then rebuilt by legendary LR/Benchrest rifle builder Mike Bryant. I would like to convert this into a PRS rifle, but I am trying to decide if it's feasible or not. It's a switch barrel rifle and both barrels shoot in the .2's and .3's with handloads, and in the 4's with Hornady factory ammo, though these are three shot groups for hunting. Haven't tested with 5 or ten shot groups, but I have done multiple groups to where the barrels were very hot and accuracy seemed to remain pretty consistent, though better on the heavy barrel. I think either would be fine for ten shot strings.

The one issue is that this is the older model with only three scope base holes and currently has a Talley steel one piece base.

Here's what I have now:

Blueprinted Remington Model 7 action with pinned Badger Ordinance Recoil Lug
Two Switch Barrels that are indexed to the action:
- New Bartlein heavy fluted barrel, 1:7.5" twist chambered in 243 Win. 20.25" plus brake
- Lilja #1 ultralight 24" barrel. 1:8 twist with Vais brake chambered in 6mm Creedmoor.
Reworked factory trigger set to 2.5 pounds. Might swap it but I have no problem shooting it accurately now.
Currently has a Pillar bedded, cerakoted factory schnabel end factory stock.

My thoughts are to switch to a chassis stock that takes AICS magazines (if I can find one), throw on 30mm Talley steel rings and my Nightforce 5.5-22 x 56mm scope and go play for a bit and see how I like it. Reasonable?

SOLD Seekins DMR 223 18" Sniper Gray

*SOLD*

I'm probably going to regret selling this but I just don't shoot 223 much since getting my 6 ARC. This is a Seekins 223 DMR 18" that I bought new from Euro Optic in September and has been to the range a hand full of times and has 300-400 rounds through it. It's the sniper gray cerakote finish which you can't get anymore (Seekins is stopping cerakote options on the gas guns). The rifle is in like new condition and shoots lights out, it's a sub 1/2moa rifle even at distance. I was hitting the 4" plate at 800 yards at JTAC with it pretty consistently. Norma 77gr SMK and Federal 77gr TMK shoot 3/8-3/4" groups. My two pet loads (77gr SMK over Varget and 77gr Berger OTM over varget) both shot 1/4-3/8" groups.

It will come with the factory Seekins case and box and all that stuff. The Magpul bipod and NF unimount (34mm 1.44" 20moa) aren't included in the price but are available to the buyer for $150 for the mount and $75 for the bipod or $200 for both. The case pictured isn't available and isn't for sale, it was just used to set the rifle up a bit.

$1600 shipped FIRM. Payment via Zelle, Venmo or USPS MO. I'm interested in some trades but only partial trades, I put a deposit down on another rifle and this is being sold to make room in the bank account and safe for that once it's ready to ship in a few months.

Trades:

- Atlas CAL bipod
- Hawkins 7mm Tank Brake ST
- Hawkins 30mm low ultra light rings with offset level.
- Hawkins Hunter LA bottom metal.
- Hawkins Hunter LA magnum (PRC) mags.
- MKM 34mm and 30mm XLP levels
- NF UL, Hawkins UL, or Seekins 34mm low rings.
- Triad stock pack in black.
- Hornady 6mm ARC 103gr ELD-X ammo (will consider 105gr BTHP as well).

Proof steel Competition Contour prefits

Been mostly out of shooting the last few years for work, starting to get back into it....

Proof's website shows their steel prefit barrels are Competition Contour, which at 26" length have a muzzle thread shoulder of 1.013" and a weight of 7lb 5oz.

Can anybody confirm the Dana 44 specifications of this barrel being larger/heavier than a Bartlein MTU?

Thanks

Critique my build

I am looking to build a long range rifle, to be used in competition (PRS) and target shooting. On a fairly tight budget and to be noted: these are based on the availability in Canada

  • Zermatt action SA - 308 bolt face for 6mm BR. Another bolt face for 6.5PRC
  • IBI heavy barrel, undecided on the length for either of the 2 calibers. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
  • MDT LSS gen 2 chassis
  • Trigger tech trigger - Looking at diamond or special.
Decided the Zermatt action based on the price, in stock as well as in stock bolt faces.

IBI due to the budget, can get others including Proof but the budget goes beyond.

Chassis, looks ideal for comp.
Glass I am putting on hold ATM.

Advice welcome! Are there any cheaper options that I should be looking at? Know that there are definitely the expensive ones 😄.

Thank you

SOLD Manners T4A SA w/ Mini Chassis

Manners T4A SA w/ mini chassis. This is a catch a release from here. Got invited on an elk hunt next season so my build plans have changed.

Stock was modified some by previous owner. Barrel channel has been opened up to accommodate M24/40 contour. Ejection port lengthened slightly. Chassis slightly modified to accommodate Triggertech safety lever. Previous owner used lighter tan paint to cover areas that were modified. There are some scratches on the cheek riser pictured as well but those are the only imperfections beyond the modified areas. Bipod rail w/ QD mount and two round holder included.

$650 shipped. PayPal f&f preferred but can discuss other options.

Thank you to everyone over many years (including the assholes)

From one year ago, I was completely lost.

A very sincere thanks to everyone here over the last many years...I appreciate you. It's been a genuine journey of personal development going from what I thought was "it" (all the stabby activities) to now.

We all shitpost, and we all say all the things.

There is only one woman for one man. When they are joined together, they are to be as one flesh.

Without everyone here (or there or everywhere fucked right off), I wouldn't have developed the mindset I have to have found this woman, this gift from God to test me against all my previous sins.

Without you, we few, we happy few, my 275 bench pressing, many bow kills and Quigley Ford assaulting Band of Brothers... for he today who does not shed blood with me today shall me not my brother......

I thank you.

God is great (Allahu Ackabar?) Inshallah?

Whatever.

Sincerely thanks (in no particular order) to @Dirty D @TheGerman @armorpl8chikn @308pirate (Honorable mentioned because zero fucks). @ArmyJerry @Bender @Redmanss. Etc.

It's good.

Thank you.

Suppressors Help Me Choose My Next Can.

There are so many good choices, it's hard for me to choose. I'm now able to say the community has good choices, because we get really good data presented to us by well known and well regarded industry voices. But it can be overwhelming.

Instead of presenting my list of selected devices and asking you for help with a down select on the choices, instead allow me to present a use case and a set of pre-defined "desirements". I think that would help me pick up on something that I might have missed. That's happened recently.

I'm a retired engineer that fusses endlessly about The Details. I was a good engineer. It does not help when faced with so many good choices. I mention this because that experience has taught me that building machines is an exercise in compromise. Tradeoffs.

So, the use case is 30 cal rifle: 308 / 6.5 CM / 6.8 SPC / 300 AAC BLK / 7mm Rem Mag Maybe, but this would be the upper power limit. Not 338 level or above. Range 500-600 yards, no more. No PRS work, but precision is always a bonus. "Only Accurate Rifles Are Interesting", but I dont compete even casually. No Mag Dumps, I dont have access to that level of fun. At the lower end of that power range is the 300 BLK likely on an AR Pistol. This is the Suppressor sub forum, so of course Mouse Farts will be part of the use case. Will it see 556 use? Likely, but not primary. I figure a 30 cal can on a 556 rifle is a safe use case for the can, given the power range already mentioned. Concussion and Recoil Reduction at the range and hunting, and Home Defense indoors on a shorty AR. Thats a pretty broad power spectrum.

A "hard use", or FA rating, is desireable but only from the perspective of less things to remember about a barrel length, or shooting schedule, or things going Tango Uniform because I let it get too hot. Not likely, but also not out of the realm of possibility as my memory gets older. Hard use cans usually get a bigger BC designed into them, and that usually improves suppression performance and opens up the accessory selection some, too. So, thats a trade.

Ti cans are a difficult selection for me right now. I dont have any, and all I have are the YouTubes to judge by. Some Tubers speak to the Ti Sparking Effect. Some say all the cans exhibit this always for the can's lifetime, some say it's a temporary thing (being mostly over and gone after the 200 shot break in period), some say it never goes away. Some say the effect only appears when the can overheats, some say a Hybrid Steel / Ti is The Way. I have face to face discussions with behind the counter experts that I trust that tell me they have witnessed Ti cans ripped apart from abuse (outside schedule conditions). OK, Duh. I dont know what to believe. My Take on Ti cans currently is, I dont have to have this feature of Lightweight in the Tradeoff considerations, OR it can be relatively Low on the Desirements. My Bottom Line on Ti is, I Know I Dont Want to deal with Sparking during some of my Use.

Back Pressure: Im not convinced that High Flow cans are The Way forward. The Tubes I've seen demonstrating them look like there is still plenty of gas in the face while using them. There is likely a recoil and concussion reduction, and there is the feature that says No Rifle Gas Adjustment needed. Which would be good positives. All my stuff has adjustable gas, so this High Flow / Low Back Pressure becomes a Dont Care for the operating system conditions. They are noticably Noisier than other types. That I do care about. If you present a High Flow choice, it will be given equal consideration. I'm Listening.

Hub / Bravo Interface: This is Must Have. The can will not be mounted permanently, but mobile between firearms.

Modular: Pretty much a Dont Care to me. It means more seams that can fail, and O-Ring Maintenance. The plus side of course is, more adjustment choices on a single F4. Thats a pretty good trade.

Suppression: Job One, right? More is better. Of course.

Size: Ah the other side of the Suppression coin. You can play with Physics and try to tame it, but you must play the game. Smaller is better. I would put an outer limit on length at 6", for the can only. Thats a pretty long tube for the lower end of my power use case, with a mounting system in place. Some of these new all-steel designs are approaching Ti can weight, which is good. Weight is a Dont Care. Except if its made from Depleted Uranium. Then You Hump It. Diameter is a Dont Care. Rifle Sights now sit on top of big stilts these days, what with 55mm front objectives and 2" standoffs for AR sights.

User Servicable: Dont Care.

Removeable End Caps: Dont Care.

Dead Air: No Thanks at this time.

Cost: Dont Care. Not Gold Plated, OK?

So, what do you think? What cans should I be considering?
