How to build a device that will do popup targets and then drop them.

A friend and fellow member here has occasional shoots at his farm and we're always looking for new ideas for challenges. I thought to make a little divice, inexpensively, that could be put behind a rock or log and an unknown distance, then have it pop up and the shooter only has say 15 seconds to identify, range, aim, and fire. Inexpensive is important. Simple remote control would be nice. Come on you engineers. Other ideas welcome.

20 Rd mags - what are people using?

I have a bunch of 30 round mags for my KAC SR-15, but looking to get some 20 rounders for prone shooting and steel Safari matches.

#1 priority is reliability. From my cursory research people loved the OKAY industry mags, which have recently gone out of business. I've heard the first gen magpuls were iffy, I'm assuming the new ones are GTG?

I hear mixed things about pretty much all other 20 rounders on the market.

Firearms MODS PLEASE CLOSE

I tried PRS and realized it's not for me. All goods listed are in 95%+ condition and most are like new; check my feedback, I take care of my things. Pricing reflects the scarcity of most of these items and the wait times to have barrel blanks available, machine work done, etc. I will not respond to low-ball offers and I'm not interested in trades. FTF deals in central VA are possible, but only for considerable purchases. I won't drive 50 miles to sell a $25 expander, in other words.

To reiterate; BUYER PAYS ACTUAL SHIPPING COST, NO TRADES

DIE
6 BR 2.5 sizing die from Harrell's: $125 new, has been ground by them for more bump on new brass to fire-form to 6 BRA, no bushing, has comparator - - - $50

bump die.jpg

RIFLE (bag, bipod, and ARCA mount are not for sale - - - scope and mount are listed separately)
MBM Super Beast II brake (x2, both nitrided at my expense), Hawk Hill 1.250" contour barrels (x2 identical, second barrel still wrapped from Alex Wheeler) at 26" with no-turn 6 BRA chambers and 1:7.5" twist, 3/4-24 muzzle threads, Defiance Deviant Elite action, Manners PRS-TCS in gloss High Plains (modified by Manners to accept long tenon Deviant Elite action) with all weights and LOP shims/Sike clutch and rail on both sides/KNW long posts for cheek riser, Triggertech Diamond pro curved single stage which was timed by Alex Wheeler; all machine work and assembly completed by Alex Wheeler, shoots in the .2s for 5 rounds since fire-forming, 850rds on the present barrel with second barrel brand new, buyer gets LRI muzzle thread protector and second brake NIB at no add'l charge (these items available separately, pricing TBD) - - - $5500, shipped to your FFL (this is the only item which I will pay to ship)

brake and protector.jpg

SCOPE AND MOUNT (sold separately from rifle, but available at a discount if combined with rifle)
Gen 3 Razor 6-36x56 MRAD in 1.18" height MDT one-piece mount - - - all perfect, like new, comes with Vortex Defender caps and MKM caps - - - $2750, will not separate these two items but they may be purchased with the rifle at a discount

One more time: these items are of exceptional quality and unprecedented scarcity. If you want the action alone you'll need to get in line for 12-18 months and pay around $1700 before shipping, without nitride. Barrel blanks are unobtanium, and then you have to consider the wait for chambering, shipping cost/time, etc. I will gladly put this back in the safe and wait for my kid to grow into it before I'll take a beating on the price so don't bother with low-ball or trade offers. Many will ask to separate the stock and barreled action, but I am not willing to separate at this time.

Texas House passed a bill saying it's illegal to make fun of certain people's hair.

The protected class just got more protected when the Texas House passed the Crown Act, or Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, making it illegal to make comments, make fun of and discriminate against a particular demographic because of their 'natural hair.'

I bet Al Sharpton and Maxine Waters continue to use flat irons.

I'm not sure if it's illegal to comment on weaves.

2023 general mayhem & disaster thread

In an effort to keep track of all the man-made things going on (derailments, explosions, major crashes, protests, etc), thought it might be handy to have a strictly summary thread. Details on events, discussions about them, etc should have their own threads where warranted. This is strictly a one post and done summary to keep a running total of events.

I think keeping weather and shootings and wars would be best served by their own threads, so this will be more of a keeping an eye other stuff.

Format should be: date / location / type of event and one or more official or unofficial references (tweets, articles etc)

Trying to keep as much info in a single post (editing to update, ideally) should be neater than random updates throughout the thread (where possible, of course)

I'll start with a couple tonight:

Mass Shooting Survey: More Voters Blame Mental Health than Guns

A survey from Rasmussen Reports shows that more likely voters blame mental health for mass shootings than blame guns.

The survey was conducted April 4-6, 2023, with 957 likely voters taking part.

According to Rasmussen, 42 percent of likely voters blame mass shootings on mental health issues while 29 percent place the blame on “access to firearms.”

Eleven percent of respondents blamed shootings on social media, while seven percent blamed the actual shooters.

Two-thirds of respondents also believe the March 27, 2023, attack on a Nashville Christian school will inspire copycat attacks at other schools.

Sixty-eight percent of likely voters said the FBI should release the manifesto left behind by the 28-year-old transgender who killed three children and three adults at the school.

The desire to see the manifesto released is strong regardless of political affiliation; “78 percent of Republicans, 66 percent of Democrats and 60 percent of unaffiliated voters” say the manifesto should be released to the public.

Criterion hybrid that won’t shoot

Howdy gents. Though I’ve been active on other sites for years, I believe this is my first post here. I’m hoping some of the experts can help me with a 16” Criterion barrel that I cannot get to shoot.

This is actually my second criterion barrel, the first had the same issues and criterion did a great job taking care of me and swapping it out for the current barrel. It’s a carbine length gas system, 1/8 twist, hybrid profile. I have built and rebuilt this upper three times now, and criterion has rebuilt it once. I am using the Criterion supplied bolt, I am using a larue MBT trigger, and I and shooting exclusively off bags or a bipod. I cannot, under any circumstances, get this rifle to shoot below 1.5 MOA. I have tried Matech 77gr MK262, black hills 77gr MK262, some Freedom munitions 77gr reloads, M193, M855, and even some junk 55gr wolf. The 77gr freedom munitions loads are capable of 1.5-1.8 MOA. Black hills gets me about 1.5-2 minutes. Everything else is 3.5 MOA or greater.

There is no tension on the gas tube, I have tried two different gas system, all installed with a torque wrench, and have used both a geissele MK4 rail and an older Troy alpha rail, also installed to spec with a torque wrench. Criterion tried my receiver face, bedded the barrel, no success. I have taken it out of that upper and installed it into another upper with a trued receiver face, no success. I then took the barrel out and tried it in a different receiver without a trued face, same results. I have tried criterion’s supplied bolt, 2 or three other bolts, and yesterday, after exhausting everything possible, swapped the entire BCG, all with no success. Is 1.5-1.8 MOA all I can expect from this barrel?

For context, I would not consider myself an expert marksman, but I have built some extremely accurate AR15’s and can shoot them well. I have another 16” upper built with an older CHF/CL Rainier Arms barrel that I can consistently pull .9-1 minute groups with. I have shot quite a bit at extended ranges and would consider myself proficient in the basics of marksmanship such that if the rifle is capable of it, I can achieve sub-minute groups from a bench.

I should add, I have had nothing but positive experiences with Criterion. They have worked very hard to help me with this, but my troubles persist. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I may be missing, or what else I could try with this? I love the idea of a match grade chrome lined barrel which is what drew me to criterion, so I would hate to swap it out for a nitrided alternative if there something I can do to correct this. Thank you all in advance.

Letter home from a young soldier.

Thought this interesting. From a site called Archaeology and ancient worlds.

Real letter from a Roman soldier
Written in the second century by a kid named Apion from a small town in Egypt.
He enlisted in the Roman army at Alexandria, got on a big government ship, and sailed to Italy. The ship made it through a terrible storm.
As soon as he landed and got his new uniform and pay, he went to have his picture painted for his family and sent it home along with this letter:

"Apion to his father and lord Epimachos: Many good wishes!
First of all I hope you are in good health and that things are going well for you and my sister and her daughter and my brother. I thank the Lord Serapis [an Egyptian god] for saving me right off when I was in danger at sea.
When I arrived at Misenum [the Roman war harbor, near Naples], I received three gold pieces from the Emperor [Trajan?] as road money, and I’m doing just fine.
Please write me a line, my lord father, about your own well-being, second about that of my brother and sister, and third so that I may devotedly greet your hand, because you brought me up well and I may therefore hope for rapid promotion, the gods willing. Give my regards to Capiton [some friend] and my brother and sister and Serenilla [a family slave?] and my friends. I’m sending you my little portrait through Euktemon. My [new]Roman name is Antonius Maximus.
All my best!"

Here is the actual letter, beautifully written in Greek on papyrus, not by the boy himself but by a hired public letter-writer.
Two of Apion’s friends who enlisted with him added their greetings in the left-hand margin.
The letter was folded and sealed.
It went by the very efficient Roman military post and made it safely all the way to the little village in Egypt, where the boy’s father and family read it almost two thousand years ago. After the father died, the letter got lost in the household rubbish and archaeologists found it not too long ago under the fallen walls of the house. With it was another letter written by Apion years later to his sister after he had long been stationed somewhere on the Roman frontier and had a wife and children of his own. That is all we know.
I would like to add a comment; In the first place, love and respect for his father and family are inferred from the boy, founding concepts of the Mos Maiorum in its first assertion: the Pietas.
Furthermore, his pride in enlisting in the Roman army is clearly perceived, arriving to defend the most distant and dangerous borders.
All this demonstrates Rome's extraordinary inclusive capacity even in the most peripheral provinces.
Contrary to what many detractors claim, Rome was not just wars, massacres and abuses of power but the bearer of well-being, modernity ,shared culture and religious tolerance.

SOLD Manners T4A project stock cheap

So here is the story, this stock was a friend of mine and bedded for a stiller Tac30. It originally had BDL floor plate. He decided that he wanted DM so in a moment of something special, he took a dremel and opened up the bottom inlet until a Badger BM I had sitting around fit. I ended up just letting him take the McMillan A5 that the BM was from and he left me this stock. All things consdered he did a pretty damn clean job for a dremel, but it is still what it is.

I was going to just take it to a smith and have it professionally fit for DBM and bed it in, but really don't need it or want to mess with it. It is originally black with a olive drab coat of paint on it. Has one swing swivel up fron and no flush cups.

Will sell it as is for $450

Any questions or additional pics as requested.

Mike '30 Pence' gets boo'd at NRA convention

"I'm a Christian, a Conservative and a Republican IN THAT ORDER". He left out Traitor and RINO.

This irrelevant Judas fuck is dillusional if he thinks he has a chance at ever entering the White House again, at least as a Republican. He must have a lot of confidence in Dominion.

Otherwise, the milk in my fridge has as much chance of winning according to the polls. It's also 2%.
