Today was a no appointment day. A day to walk the room, see what I could see and revisit a few places just to look again at a few products.

Heard other people ask the question, but never got a clear response.

Which one offers higher/more consistent quality?

I understand price can fluctuate a lot between calibers chosen and the different actions and sizes they offer, so I do not care for price in this question. This is a “if everything was free” kind of question.

I just want to know plainly, which is better.

Would one be better for plinking, or hunting, or vice versa, or is there yet another brand that is even better than these two that I am unaware of?

I’m just looking for general insight, any information would be appreciated

  When Danny Wakefield gave birth to their first child in 2020, it brought to light a string of issues faced by transgender parents in the health care system.
  “I had a really hard pregnancy,” Wakefield, 36, who is transgender but also uses they/them pronouns, tells Yahoo Life. During emergency room visits, Wakefield says they were met with “snickers” from nurses, as well as “doubt, disbelief and a lack of knowledge” from physicians ill-equipped to handle their needs.
  “In one instance, it took an hour and a half to get them to treat me because they didn't believe I was pregnant,” Wakefield says. “The doctors and nurses would talk quietly among themselves, asking each other questions about me, instead of asking me directly — the patient who's sitting right in front of them.”
  Stories like Wakefield’s are not uncommon, says Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver, assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine. That’s mainly because the medical establishment — and society at large — has little knowledge about pregnancy in the trans male population.
  
  “We grow up in a world with books, from preschool on up, that until very recently have not imagined or really represented the diversity of communities as they are,” Obedin-Maliver tells Yahoo Life. “None of our systems have been designed to delineate the difference between somebody's gender and somebody's pregnancy capacity.”
  That’s slowly changing, Obedin-Maliver points out, due to a growing demand from transgender patients — and because more and more are sharing their stories, as with a recently trending New York Times Op-Doc about a trans man giving birth in a small town in Mexico.​

So my company does reviews and raises at Christmas .My Boss shows up the day before our Christmas Party to give me the talk . " Great job , we appreciate all your hard work " . Then tells me 5 percent is my raise . Not shabby as I'm up in the pay scale . 18 yrs in . Fuck yeah I'll take it .
Fast forward second week O January when the raise hits or not . Hey Boss where's my raise . " No problem you're right I'll fix it . " End of the day " yeah , no . Mistake you don't get that ".
Talk to the VP he says he'll talk to CEO sorry , mistake . 4 bidnit days later . Yeah , nope . 1 percent .
In July I was given a raise for Employee Retention to reflect the wage offset . 4 percent .
They're telling me that oh we made a mistake blah blah blah . How the eff do you tell someone " Merry Christmas , hey this is yours you earned it " then tell them yeah fuck off .

I am a CNC Service Engineer by specialty . I am responsible for all of the maintenance in my plant plus CNC machines in 2 other plants . I am the only Maintenance Lead that launches and manages projects , does cost savings projects , does not rely on outside contractors for my day to day and I could go on .
Time for a new gig . Man I an fuckin Gob Fuckin Smacked .
We did a break down on costs and I save these guys about $5,000 a week just in labor .
Just did a ball screw , nut and bearings replacement . Axis zero offset was off . Instead of doing factory procedure that would have effed up all the TLO's and workshift geometries , I cheated the Z Axis Zero Offset (an encoder pulse value ) and re established thed original Z Zero . Factory tech would have zero's everything and said good luck . These guys are in for a rude awakening .
My subordinate doesn't work OT and bails in the middle of large repairs . Young guy .

This barrel is a replacement for a replacement. The first one had drastically undersized muzzle threads. The second one had drastically undersized tennon threads. All showed this same rough threading. The first one had the same bad crown as this one. The second had no crown. I guess when you crown like this. Leave it alone. Lol.

I tried to lap the tendon threads some to remove some of the roughness. Then I ran a patch down, and had to bump the cleaning rod with my palm to get the patch through the crown. The rough threads are crappy, the crown is worse, I wonder what the chamber job and rifling job on the blank looks like for that matter.

I notice no one else sends me barrels with threads that look like this. It's only my assumption that there is a reason.

Just sharing as PSA.

Just a little info...all (most) premium barrel manufacturers stamp the end of their barrel blanks with their brand, caliber, bore size, twist rate, material used, and sometimes even a production serial number. Other larger mass production manufacturers often do not due to volume and time constraints. If you are ordering a barrel from whatever company you choose to finish the blank, always request or demand that you get that coin for a few specific reasons. First reason is that if there is any problem with the bore in production (and yes, it happens to the best of them), the first thing they will do is ask for this information, so it's a good idea to keep this coin handy until you have determined that all is well. Secondly, it's a surefire way of making sure that you have gotten exactly as you paid for and will ensure you have a record for future purchases. Lastly, if you are an avid shooter and go through a lot of barrels, these are nice to have around. I know that @padom has a ton of these and has already or is in the process of making a table top under a thick coating of urethane out of his collection.

I was very impressed with their Vantage IR 1-4x20 - Turkey Dot - Red / Green Illuminated reticle with 5 brightness settings, over 4" of ER and a true 1 power. Both eyes open perfect 1x. For $219.99 grab this for your short range scope or for kids as the eye relief is amazing.

Their Vantage 1-8x24 WA's are also true 1x scopes also Red/Green and at $399.99 certainly worth checking out.

I was excited to see the new Frontier LRF 8x42 & 10x42 Rangefinder Binoculars Optics looked nice at the edges, no blue cast to the vision (Can't really do an optics evaluation inside a convention center) and 6 controllable brightness settings on the LED readout. Its range finding capabilities include: Distance, Rain, Hunt, Near, Horizontal Distance and Angle modes. The display brightness can be manually adjusted between 6 levels of brightness. The LRF requires a 3V CR2 battery and will automatically turn off after 15 seconds of no operation to save power.

I was contacted a few weeks ago by a rep I once worked with over at Steiner. He is now with Pard Nightvision. Out of a combination of curiosity of what he's been up to the last few years and what Pard was all about I made an appointment to meet up with him. After catching up he started showing me why I wanted to carry Pard as spec wise it is impressive, however, I stopped him after the response to my question "Is Pard a USA company". It is a Chinese company. We understand that many of the brands we carry source product from China. That's fine as it's a world market place, however, the profits from those companies stay here in the USA. Pard is a Chinese company so all $$$$ stay in China. I'm sure it's a great product from what he was saying, however, we prefer not to support a Chinese owned brand.

Coincidentally, my next meeting was with Steiner. As you know they recently released their T6Xi Riflescopes which very quickly have become quite popular and well received.

Continuing along the theme of high end optics I went off to my meeting with Nightforce. We chatted a bit and caught up. No new product at this point, however, back ordered product is fewer, turn around times are shorter throughout the line and production delays have shortened. All great news as far as I'm concerned.

Staying with top end optics my next stop was a meeting with Tangent Theta. Talk about professionals. The crew are Tangent are just all such nice, knowledgeable and friendly folks it's just a pleasure to meet with them. I was shown the new 7-35x56....

We have been a Bushnell dealer for decades. My last stop of the day is with another long standing industry brand, Zeiss. A few months back we got a new sales rep and I was looking forward to meeting him. He's been attentive to our account, great on the phone and e-mails but it's always nice to put a face with the assistance. Turns out, great guy.
Checked out their new SFL 30 Ultra-Compact Binoculars - the newest, lightest, and most compact binoculars to the ZEISS SF family. The ZEISS SFL (SmartFocus and Lightweight) is certainly impressive. Then I checked out the New Generation of V8 Riflescopes - They feature a 30/34mm main tube, exceptional optical performance, an extra-large eye box, and a daylight visible illuminated dot reticle.

Zeiss is doing everything right and I think these new products are excellent additions to their line up of superior products.

Reading some bolt-action blogs and watching youtube reviews, Kreiger, Bartlein, and Proof Research are pretty big names in the precision rifle bolt-action world, along with Hawk Hill and Benchmark. Do these three names carry the same weight in the AR world, especially with regard to precision and long-range shooting? They are all priced around $600 or more so I can assume you are paying for quality, or are you partially just paying for the name? With match-grade ammo or ammo you reload yourself, do these three giants run with the very best barrels you can possibly get for the AR-15 platform, for precision and accuracy-focused builds?

I'm putting aside WOA, Shilen, Criterion, Lilja, JP, etc. because my question is rather focused on whether these 3 specific giants have made as successful a transition from precision rifle (bolt-action) shooting over into the AR space, especially the AR-15. There is not that much content on Youtube that focuses on these three names in the AR-15 world.

To say that today was insanely busy would be beyond an understatement. I need to maybe bring a skateboard with me next year if I plan another day like today. Talk about logging miles, whew.

I started my day over at GPO. Last year they introduced their 8x32 and 10x32 Rangeguide Binoculars and I was excited to see what they were introducing now.

I was very impressed with their Vantage IR 1-4x20 - Turkey Dot - Red / Green Illuminated reticle with 5 brightness settings, over 4" of ER and a true 1 power. Both eyes open perfect 1x. For $219.99 grab this for your short range scope or for kids as the eye relief is amazing.

Their Vantage 1-8x24 WA's are also true 1x scopes also Red/Green and at $399.99 certainly worth checking out.

I was excited to see the new Frontier LRF 8x42 & 10x42 Rangefinder Binoculars Optics looked nice at the edges, no blue cast to the vision (Can't really do an optics evaluation inside a convention center) and 6 controllable brightness settings on the LED readout. Its range finding capabilities include: Distance, Rain, Hunt, Near, Horizontal Distance and Angle modes. The display brightness can be manually adjusted between 6 levels of brightness. The LRF requires a 3V CR2 battery and will automatically turn off after 15 seconds of no operation to save power.

I was contacted a few weeks ago by a rep I once worked with over at Steiner. He is now with Pard Nightvision. Out of a combination of curiosity of what he's been up to the last few years and what Pard was all about I made an appointment to meet up with him. After catching up he started showing me why I wanted to carry Pard as spec wise it is impressive, however, I stopped him after the response to my question "Is Pard a USA company". It is a Chinese company. We understand that many of the brands we carry source product from China. That's fine as it's a world market place, however, the profits from those companies stay here in the USA. Pard is a Chinese company so all $$$$ stay in China. I'm sure it's a great product from what he was saying, however, we prefer not to support a Chinese owned brand.

Coincidentally, my next meeting was with Steiner. As you know they recently released their T6Xi Riflescopes which very quickly have become quite popular and well received.

Continuing along the theme of high end optics I went off to my meeting with Nightforce. We chatted a bit and caught up. No new product at this point, however, back ordered product is fewer, turn around times are shorter throughout the line and production delays have shortened. All great news as far as I'm concerned.

Staying with top end optics my next stop was a meeting with Tangent Theta. Talk about professionals. The crew are Tangent are just all such nice, knowledgeable and friendly folks it's just a pleasure to meet with them. I was shown the new 7-35x56....

We have been a Bushnell dealer for decades. As they go through different hierarchy changes they treat us either as a Camera dealer, in which case we are not permitted to order Tactical product, and sometimes we are treated, as we should be, as a Sport Optics retailer, and we have provided you with some amazing opportunities on their Tactical scopes. In 2019 & 2020 we did big business with Bushnell and then new folks came in and we were reverted to Camera dealer status and no longer able to purchase their Tactical scopes (a shame as we went through over 3,000 of their scopes the prior year). We had, what I thought was a good meeting last year at SHOT but nothing came of it. We met again today. I think the meeting went well and hopefully we will soon be back handling their premium riflescopes. Stay tuned and we will let you know when we know.

A short walk brought me over to Leupold. I look forward to my meeting with Leupold as my rep is a great guy and the Nat'l is as well. Leupold has been an industry main stay for decades and usually introduces something very worth sharing here at SHOT.

No fisheye effect, no distortion, PA, so compact. Great scope for sure IMO. Looks like the successful Mark 5 HD line of scopes has given birth to a great addition....

There are more reticle options coming mid-year for this scope. These new three SKUs now are just the first round. Very exciting.

My last stop of the day is with another long standing industry brand, Zeiss. A few months back we got a new sales rep and I was looking forward to meeting him. He's been attentive to our account, great on the phone and e-mails but it's always nice to put a face with the assistance. Turns out, great guy.
Checked out their new SFL 30 Ultra-Compact Binoculars - the newest, lightest, and most compact binoculars to the ZEISS SF family. The ZEISS SFL (SmartFocus and Lightweight) is certainly impressive. Then I checked out the New Generation of V8 Riflescopes - They feature a 30/34mm main tube, exceptional optical performance, an extra-large eye box, and a daylight visible illuminated dot reticle.

Zeiss is doing everything right and I think these new products are excellent additions to their line up of superior products.

Alright guys I was tossing around the idea of doing some snow monster and flips merch. Talked with the guys that made the image and they are cool with it. They requested that their cut of the proceeds be donated a charity of choice by @lowlight

Being that this whole debacle started by an attempt to scalp this community, I will follow suit with them and donate all of the proceeds to the chosen charity.
