Tips for creating a custom rifle through APR?

I’ve been looking into making a custom rifle for some long range steel plinking. I’ve heard a lot of good about Alamo Precision and their rifles, but I have no clue what to expect or what questions I should be ready to answer when I call them…

For example, one of my dream builds would be a .338 lapua, preferably with a defiance ruckus action, bertlein barrel, a good trigger like a triggertech diamond or others similar, and any chassis that is sturdy and fits the previously mentioned parts.

Would that be all the info they need and they can fill in the rest, or do they need more specific statistics or parts?

Again, I am very new to both the custom side of bolt actions, and APR, so any and all information would be greatly appreciated.

Pst gen 2 3-15 vs xtr3 3-18i

I think I have it narrowed down to these 2 scopes. I had my heart set on the xrt3i for what seemed like forever waiting for the release. Then I kinda lost interest when manufacturing moved to the Philippines.

This will be for a hunting/target hybrid. (Think NRL hunter class)

So far my thoughts are as follows.

PST gen 2
-A few onces lighter.
-Few hundred dollars cheaper.
-The whole vortex warranty thing.

XTR3 I
-Higher magnification
-The xtr2 had a track record of durability(not sure if this applies here)

I have also been dreaming of an nx8 4-32 but struggle to spend that much money for something I really don't use that much.

The vortex lht 4.5-22 looks perfect on paper but I am not spending that much on a scope with turrets that belong on a Walmart scope.

Appreciate any thoughts

Begrudgingly, I’m looking to get back to reloading and right now specifically looking at electronic powder dispensers

Disclaimer: I will apologize up front for this going long. I know we all like short posts, but this will not be one of those.

Don’t really want to reload anymore but I have so much once fired brass now that reloading is pulling back me in!

Dispensers are not necessarily time savers (some take 45-seconds to dispense a load), nor necessarily more accurate than other methods, but there is some worth just for convenience.

I’m old. Been shooting since I was eight, probably before a lot of you were born. Back in my reloading days we all used beam scales. They worked just fine. Accuracy was great. I did tens of thousands of reloads back then, one at time for rifle accuracy and progressive presses for volume shotgun competition shooting.

The title says it all. However, being “anal”, as in an analyst by profession, and having searched the site for all posts relating to this topic, I still don’t have valid answer to my questions:

We now have dispensers going from say $300 to $2000. Do they really make a difference? I’d say yes for convenience sake so let’s say they do. However, is the price difference between them worth a .05 or so grain accuracy?

Lots of questions.

How good is good enough? What is the difference in a .05 grain charge variability in actual vertical dispersion results? Except for aerodynamic jump, at 100 yards, where we all initially test, the powder charge should have no other influence. So how much vertical dispersion will a .05 grain charge have? Is it worth a $2K? $700? or a $300 machine?

And I have a lot to say about powders. I’ll leave it at this: Extrusion powders have a variance in the length of the stick. Ball powders have a variance in the size of the ball. What happens when you throw a charge that happens to have only the smaller sticks or balls? It burns quicker. Does that affect results. You bet ya.

Am I wrong to assume that? Don’t think so…

Is 100th of a grain (.01) significant in accuracy? Forget that, I’ll say no until proven otherwise,

How about a 10th of a grain.(.1)? That’s a more valid question. Does anyone know for a fact that this makes a difference? As in LOTS of shots to prove that?

See what am I getting at? There are so many other variables in reloading, rifles, and the person behind the trigger that it makes me think those small variations would be lost in the “noise”. And right out of my pocket… If so I’ll go for the $300 dispenser…

I’d love to see valid data if any of you have any. If you don’t then it’s no issue. just disregard this post. I will eventually find the truth on my own. Just trying to save time, at 68 years of age, my extremely valuable time!

All the Best, and Happy New Year!

Dumb shit we've seen in 2022

This world is truly getting fucking stupid. Last I knew, corn was already a vegetable, so no need to mark it as "Vegetarian".

I know I've seen even dumber shit this past year, but this was today, and it kind of caught me off guard. I guess it really shouldn't, though.

So, to send this year off, post some of your favorite dumb shit from 2022.

Rifle Scopes Anyone have the backstory on oddly specific ring heights?

I was doing some research on rings/mounts today for some CNVD use and noticed that both my Geissele and Nightforce mount have heights of 1.54”. This got me thinking… what’s the deal with this? Why do we have things like this 1.54” and 1.93” instead of just 1.5” and 2”?

My first thought was some metric conversion but neither of those are clean conversions.

Any ideas?

Bag for brass at the range

Currently I use a high-tech plastic grocery bag to collect my brass for a potential reloading retirement (or I’ll just sell it). Grocery bags develop holes, of course, so I look cool dribbling brass back to my truck lol.

Thinking something that stands up by itself along with a way to cinch it shut. Also something that will hold lots of brass as I’m lazy, leave it in the truck and don’t want to empty it much.

The size requirement knocks off Cole Tac’s brass bag and a number of other things. I’m left with stuff sacks (don’t stand up), smallish tool bags, or this thing; they don’t even include cord locks wtf:

Home Depot Cofounder Bernie Marcus Blames Socialism for ‘Lazy,’ ‘Fat,’ ‘Stupid’ Labor Force

Home Depot CEO Bernie Marcus poses for a portrait in a Home Depot store October 15, 1998. (Erik Lesser/Liaison)

Home Depot cofounder Bernie Marcus blamed socialism for generating an entitled labor force that is “lazy,” “fat,” and “stupid.”
Due to the economic agenda of “socialism,” Marcus told the Financial Times, “Nobody works. Nobody gives a damn. ‘Just give it to me. Send me money. I don’t want to work — I’m too lazy, I’m too fat, I’m too stupid.’”
As an alternative, Marcus, 93, explained that capitalism is a good system because it is based on merit.
“I’m worried about capitalism,” Marcus said. “Capitalism is the basis of Home Depot [and] millions of people have earned this success and had success. I’m talking manufacturers, vendors and distributors and people that work for us able to enrich themselves by the journey of Home Depot. That’s the success. That’s why capitalism works.”
Marcus argued that business is meant to make a profit from offering a service or product. Marcus said a business’s ability to generate profit benefits employees and customers. He also slammed those who believe business exists for “social purposes.”
“The role of a business is to sell a product and make a profit,” he said. “The whole idea that a business is set up for social purposes doesn’t make sense to me.”
Marcus added if he and cofounder Arthur Blank tried to launch Home Depot in today’s society and regulatory environment, it would be less successful. Big government’s love of red tape, along with a lackluster labor force, especially hurts small businesses’ ability to compete with big business.
“We would end up with 15, 16 stores,” he said. “I don’t know that we could go further.”
Home Depot is a successful business. It boasts 2,300 stores in North America. Its market capitalization is $300 billion, and it generates $150 billion in annual revenue.
Marcus cofounded Home Depot in 1979 after starting his career as a pharmacist. He served as its CEO for 19 years and chairman of the board until he retired in 2002.
As a longtime conservative donor, Marcus supported former President Donald Trump and became one of his largest donors. Marcus’s continued support of Trump in the 2020 election cycle triggered a boycott of Home Depot, even though Marcus no longer worked with the company.
Marcus told the Times he makes no apologies for backing Republicans, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), who could announce a 2024 campaign. “I give money to them because I hope they’re going to do the right thing,” Marcus said.
Marcus described Trump’s policies as “spot on” but did not say if he would support one man over the other for the GOP nomination.
“It’s going to be very interesting in ’24 because I think DeSantis will challenge him. And may the better man win,” Marcus said.
