Just out of curiosity, are the old Mauser 98 actions desirable these days? I know there are a shit ton of modern actions on the market now, but do any custom rifles get built on the old stuff very much any more?

I was working on building my 7 PRC and when i was getting ready to order the 175 grn bullets the guy at the check out asked me why I am not shooting the 180 ELD Match or the 190 A Tip. Now Im have hunted with match ammo and they were effective, but i want to get everyone’s opinion on the pros and cons if I went purely with a match bullet for hunting application.

How and where do you fellas mount your barrel vices. I am building my workbench after a move and have a room (unfinished) to myself. My workbench is wooden and in progress, but I am worried if I just mount it to the bench it won't be sturdy enough or I'll overthink it and do it wrong.

Current thinking: Bolt Bench to House Frame.
Barrel Vice on one end of the bench, 1/2 way between front and back of bench

Hi Friends,

I regularly shoot 338 lapua from a 26 inch barrell with 300 grain bergers, loading 90 grain H1000. Velocity ~2763 fps.

Attached are some pictures of fired brass. Can some experienced reloaders help me read any pressure signs from these pictures ? Rifles shoots perfectly but want to make sure I am not in too much of a danger zone.

Trying to buy the absolute best low light optic I can. Need some recommendations from those who have used.
Need one ASAP. New or used.
A particular location I hunt is dark timber. I run out of light before legal shooting. I have everything from NF ATACR, Leupold VX5, Mark5HD, Zeiss V6, Kahles 318 and 525, and several below that.
The Kahles is without question the brightest in low light of all them. But, are there any out there that have experience with say the Meopta Meostar, Swaro Z6, S&B Polar, Leica Magnus etc….the ones that are suppose to be king at low light? Wondering if I’m chasing my tail or if there is a noticeable difference? It’s not that I have difficulty making the animal out. It’s resolving antler differences. 4 point/5point, mass/thin etc.

Help spend my money….

I will be heading out west this year for hunting season. I’m planning on one gun for anything (I live in NJ, we can’t rifle hunt here, so I have no big game rifles).

I want one rifle that can’t handle just about anything (brown/black bear, elk, goats, deer).


I would like to build on a custom action. I want to be on the lighter end. I don’t want my shoulder dislocated every shot.

I’m leaning towards a 7PRC and a Vortex LHT Razor (not sure on magnification)

For them seasoned hunters, please give me some guidance .
