I recently got a complete AT folding butt assembly that had suffered a broken bolt for the butt pad spacer.
I knew ahead of time that if I showed up at my favorite machinists place with a complete butt skeleton he’d laugh me out of the shop so I had to disassemble it.
Make sure you remove the rubber anti rattle disc for the rear sling attachment before you get started, if you haven’t already lost it.
First step was to remove the hardware for the vertical portion. These screws are often installed while the epoxy is still wet so it’s necessary to heat them until the epoxy joint smells like burning hair- about 350F with MAPP gas. After that, the screws come right out.
Then it’s a matter of heating and driving out the vertical portion of the butt with a block of wood and a hammer. Don’t freak out when you discolor the black anodizing; just smear oil on it after it cools and it’ll be fine.
After a trip to my buddy’s shop:
I decided to go with green:
And add it to the collection for future conversions of 1.5s to 2.0s.
The black one is from a left handed AT.
It can be converted by flipping the hinge.
