Gunsmithing 223 AI Prairie Dog Rebarrel - 4Groove 5R Rifling

I have been hitting dog towns for the last 6 years with buddies. Running 223 Ackley. Initially I was running a Proof Competition Contour that I had a local smith open up to Ackely Improved. IT would shoot bugholes with 53 VMax at 3400 and 77 SMK at 2960 - XBR8208. I screwed that barrel up with a 6mm Cleaning rod. Yes (6mm wont go far down the barrel of a 223). Bought a Bartline CF 26" 223 and had it chambered to 223 AI. Shot ok groups, but the loss of weight lost some stability. Had my smith spin up an Ospery 1.25 straight taper in 223 AI and took that the last 2 trips. IT shot 80 ELDM's pretty tight, but seemed less so with the 53 vmax (3400) and 62 eldvt's (3200).

I need new Barrel (old setup wont fit in new stock) and am looking at Remington Varmint/Sendero contour. HERE IS THE REAL QUESTION. What rifiling do I go with. 1:7 is my thought - though I could be ok with 1:7.5 or 1:8. In PRS the 5R was the answer for consistent accuracy in a 6mm. Looking at Bartline's website they indicated short light for caliber bullets 35-60 in 224, dont really like 5R rifling....... This kind of consides with my current barrel accuracy issues (perhaps percision is a better term)

Anyone got any feedback with 4 Groove vs 5R in lighter bullets on a 223 Centerfire?

Thanks for the feedback.

Favorite Chassis choice

I've been using an MPA comp chassis since I began shooting a few years back. Lately I've just not been happy with it or maybe I just want a change for no real reason. Anyway onto my actual questions.

I shoot primarily team sniper type comps and PRS. I'm thinking I'd like a lighter chassis for field matches and a heavier chassis for PRS that I could just swap out. I've been looking at the KRG and MDT but never held or shot them before. Tell me what y'all have. Give me feedback on what you like about them and pictures get bonus points.

6mm arc alpha and peterson brass experience?

After seeing recent vids on 6 ARC from Greg and the guys at Full Circle Reloading, i'm highly considering a 6ARC gasser. I don't reload much but i do utilize guys like V3 munitions and others that can load ammo for me(i sold off my reloading gear a few years ago due to financial circumstances) and i'm looking at alpha and peterson brass for these.

What is everyone's experience with these brands in 6 arc and what have you noticed?

Also anyone have any good loads for 108 elite hunters for 6arc?

Blue Buffer spring drama. Malfunctions with new springs. Anyone else seen this?

I go through the ARs I compete with and replace cam pins, firing pin retainers and this year I decided to change buffer springs. My main competition rifle is five years old and though it only has about 3500 rounds in it I figured why not.

Main rifles have mil spec carbine receiver extensions and all have 4oz Spikes Tactical carbine buffers. I ordered three Springco blue springs and swapped them out. Blue slings were about 1” longer than the ones I pulled so I thought at the time I made a good choice .

Issue 1. Shot about 60 rounds down a 14.5 with 5.56 RC2 ran fine. Cases drop 3’ away at 4 o’clock. All good. I put the rifle up dirty with an ECI in it. Pulled it out to get it ready for some shooting after our 3 x 1000 today. Remove the ECI, hit the bolt release and nothing. Bolt didn’t budge. I pull the charging handle back a couple times and nothing. I smack the stock with my hand and the bolt dropped. Cycles fine afterwards and shot fine but this was odd. Never seen this before. Tube and buffer are smooth, no scratches, no excessive fouling.

Issue 2: Today I bring my 15.1” RECCE out with AEM5. First time I have shot it with the new spring. I can’t get through 4 shots without the bolt skipping over the case and jamming the rifle. Did it four times. Buddy had his 14.5 with him with standard mil spec spring. We swapped them and it Ran through 30 rounds with no issues.

I’m not shitting on these springs but I’m not happy . It seems like the one in the 14.5” bound up and the one in the RECCE was too strong/fast and wouldn’t reliably run with my USGI 30 rounder or my buddies 20 round colt mag.

Anyone else ran into anything like this with these blue springs?

Any Giraud Annealer folks here?

Having an issue setting it up. I watch youtube videos and basically everyone is doing something different, and their brass all looks different. No idea whos right/wrong or what anymore.

The best brass I saw which had an even golden anneal past the shoulder was actually a PrimalRights video but hes using a BenchSource. I haven't found that with any videos on the Giraud, and the Giraud instructions basically say put 750 Tempilaq in it and get it to the point where it melts it and thats it. When I do that, I don't get the nice annealed color/pattern like you see on 5.56 brass from the factory. Is it even supposed to do that?

Anyone have any gas and timer settings they use on the Giraud I can try and base a trial/error off of? Anyone know of an actual video for the Giraud thats correct and the brass looks the way its supposed to?

White Oak Armament knows exactly what it takes to make award winning gas guns.
The barrel nut is important. Which is why they use a massive steel barrel nut on their builds.
