It’s The Thought That Counts

PRS Rimfire Production & NRL22 Base Class Rifle Scope Selection

The new 2026 NRL22 rules are out. The MSRP limit for the Base Division has been increased to $1650 USD.

I’ve gotten a few questions about gear selection, so I put together a simple list to help. I’m sure I’ve missed a few options. If you have any other recommendations, feel free to drop them in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.

Best way to use it: go to “File” → “Make a Copy” to save it to your own Google Drive so the checkboxes and formulas will work, or download it as an Excel file.

Hopefully this helps new shooters pick their first Production or Base Class rig.

Which is best for a short barrel?

I will be having a 22 creed, 22–250 or 20 practical built as a dedicated coyote rifle. I'd like to have a relatively short barrel so it's still handy with a suppressor on it. Are any of these more conducive to a short barrel than the rest? I was thinking 18 to 20" if I can get away with it

I'd also consider a 6creed/243 if somebody can convince me that it won't blow big holes in the coyotes. I prefer no exits at all.

MPA Matrix Pro II vs the Vanquish

Advice requested on last minute reconsiderations regarding the chassis selection for an MPA PMR rifle on order: Matrix Pro II vs the Vanquish.

I chose the latest iteration of the Matrix, the Pro II, but now I am thinking of changing the work order I sent to MPA to specify the Vanquish instead. Would like to know thoughts from those who have used either, and especially those who have used both.

At this point 3 considerations steer me toward the Vanquish:

1) The Vanq has a more manageable forend than the mile wide Matrix Pro II.

2) Out of the box, the Vanq has more mass in the forend. That may possibly save me from having to add additional weights out front, keeping the overall rifle weight down.

3) I like running an over the bore bipod when shooting non PRS from a bench or ELR prone, which necessitates pic rail attachment on the segments that fit onto the top of the forend of the chassis, over the barrel. That is not an
option for the segments that fit the Matrix Pro II, as far as I can tell, while it is for the Vanquish.

Thoughts, anyone? Any advice much appreciated. I will be using the rifle for some PRS along with general ELR fun time shooting. Maybe kill a deer or hog or coyote too.

AB Quantum and Kestrel 5700 elite x issues

I’m having AB Quantum and Kestrel 5700 elite x issues… it’s probably operator issues.

Tall target test good, I have a Doppler for my mv, firmware is good, and my custom drag model is off by a few tenths at distance (800-1000). In the app I just correct the ballistics using cdf because I know my mv is good. Easy peasy and works everytime no problem.
I have had a kestrel for a while but never used it but recently decided I was decent enough to possibly get some use out of it. Send my profile to the kestrel and it’s off by .3 mil at 1000. It’s like my cdf didn’t transfer to the kestrel? Also I noticed that even when I turn the pin off and up my Bluetooth the environmentals don’t update in my phone app. I have to manually update them.

I’ve been able to get the kestrel really close to my app solutions by creating a new profile, using g7, and then manipulating mv (inside 600yds) or BC (600+). I don’t like this because what if I go shoot in the mountains and have a velocity change? I can’t put in the actual mv because I already had to play with the actual mv to get the kestrel tried. The app is so easy… I must be doing something wrong in the kestrel? Is there a way to manually enter cdf in kestrel with the custom drag curve? Help!!!
