New Member From NC

Hello all,
Name here is Don and I am from Winston-Salem NC. This is my first time at long range shooting and hope to learn some good tips here on the forum. Just purchased the Bergara Wilderness HMR in 300 PRC. Have not even shot it yet as I am waiting on all of my cleaning gear to get here. Plan a trip to the range here soon though. Thanks for letting me aboard and hope to talk to you all soon!

Show yer Peacemakers, folks!

As many here may know, I'm not very big on Wheel guns. I prefer semi-auto pistols for the capacity in re HD/SD scenarios. I do own a SW Model 10, given to me by my Uncle. That said, I do acknowledge that revolvers have their place in our community and they are well liked. So I should learn to get used to them, if only for sport/skill purposes.

The revolver that has fascinated me over time is the Colt SAA or "Peacemaker," .45LC. For my Miami Vice brethren here, Willie Nelson, playing an old, retired "Texas Ranger" in the "El Viejo" episode pawned one of his Colt Peacemakers

And here's the opening of that episode. Note that while it appears in Season 3, ep. 7, it must have been broadcast "out of order," because, by this time, they had already blown up he Daytona Spider and replaced it with the White Testarossa.

And the last "gunfight" scene where Willie uses his remaining Peacemaker and dies after helping Crocket stop the BGs... Not sure if the sound effects are accurate in re: the Peacemaker, but it is rather interesting.

When I went onto Gunbroker to look up the SAA or Peacemaker, I got a ton of different responses, barrel lengths, etc. I wasn't sure what was what. Therefore, I ask those of you who own a Peacemaker, what you consider to be the best model. I'll use the gun featured in the Miami Vice episode as the "canonical standard." If you have pics, please post. I'd like to see what you have. I have to figure that's one of the better wheel guns on which to learn how to shoot wheel guns. Don't think I'd want a SW 500 class gun at this point.

If ya got a Peacemaker, show it here.... Thanks much.

And, here's a bit more Willie.....

Feds bust Sinola cartel meth operation in small town

Local talent had been sufficiently paid off to run cover for the operation for the last 6 years - they are treating to sue over the lost revenue.

Barrel choice for an accuracy international AT 308 firing 155 gr lapua scenar L

I'm about to build a 308 barrel setup for these projectiles fired from an accuracy international AT. I have a 1-12 barrel knocking around but I'm unsure whether this twist rate will work well with these projectiles and varget. Im looking at an 18" ish barrel or maybe shorter (plus brake) and I wonder if I'd need a different twist rate for these projectiles and barrel length.

Whats your opinion?

Maggie’s Planning a Road Trip to Alaska - Need Intel

I'm getting itchy feet, so it's time to start planning a road trip. I want to see Alaska. It will be nearly 7000 miles roundtrip by the time I factor in excursions. I'm aiming for September. With any luck, this tariff situation will have settled down by then and all they'll hate me for is being Califorian. I'm used to that. There will be several challenges I can foresee.
  • My Akita, Shiloh will be coming with me. That means getting health certificates...etc.
  • My Driver's license is up for renewal in September, so I need to get that done as early as possible because I'll need the new license with me.
  • Carrying handguns across Canada ain't happening. Long guns might be possible, but it depends on a lot of "Things" I can't control. Best plan of action may be to just buy a Guide Gun or something similar at the first Alaskan town I reach. (Tok) It'll make a better souvenir than a t-shirt or coffee mug, am I right? On my return trip through Tok, I've already found a business that specializes in shipping guns back down to greater 48. In the meantime, I've already picked up a couple of big cans of bear spray.
  • I think my F-250 will be my best vehicle for the trip. I've already spoke with a localized and tamed Snow Mexican who's made this trip before, and she assures me that diesel will be easy to find going thru Canada. Looking on the map, average distance between communities stays below 300 miles. That's well within the range of my fuel tank. I'll carry extra tanks just in case. I also don't plan to go pass any community without tanking up first.
  • Being in Alaska on, or close to the Equinox will mean cold nights and maybe cold days. I can prepare for that. It will also mean less mosquitoes and a better chance of seeing Northern Lights.
Is there something else I should be planning for, doing or not doing? I've never been to Alaska before, and I'll be in some remote country with just my dog for backup.

I don't plan on hunting or fishing on this trip. But whatever I learn on this trip may well lead to a focused hunting/fishing trip in the future.

Any tips, cautions or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks

Your take on what our (society) future looks like...

I'm feeling a bit pessimistic on the topic myself-

Reason being that housing is abjectly unaffordable for most of the new house purchasing market.

Costs continue to rise yet wages remain stagnant. I can't help but think we're reaching a point where we're approaching "a moment". I've shared it here before but I finally purchased my 1st house (at a later age than I'd care to admit) last year and it took me an substantially above average income & freakish commitment to living in the slums in order to save a down payment to get to this point.

While I'm grateful for my humble house- I can't help but feel this necessity is beyond unrealistic/unsustainable. I keep thinking something has to "give" eventually but it doesn't. I have season tickets to Hershey Park and have noticed the folks cleaning up trash are easily 70+ years old... That gives me pause. Perhaps they squandered away every dollar they earned but conversely perhaps they just got priced out of life and quite literally have to pick up trash in their 70/80's just to eat that night.

Certainly a complicated problem but... I'd argue that it's also a very real societal problem too. Present company excluded- but I often see folks that are already home owners take the stance that the others just "need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps" so they can be like them & live their best life. But... It doesn't seem to work that way does it? At least not today.
