The 9th Circus Delivers Again

In 2017 the Honorable Judge Benitez ruled against California's magazine ban in Duncan v. Bonta and gave California residents "Freedom Week". The 9th Circus quickly put that order on hold and played all kinds of games until the case finally reached the Supreme Court in 2022. The Supreme Court decided Bruen in 2022 so sent Duncan back to the 9th with orders to "reconsider in light of Bruen".

In 2023 Judge Benitez again found that the magazine ban was unconstitutional. The 9th then played all kinds of games including some very unusual procedural shenanigans to ensure that the magazine ban stood. Well today the 9th once again ruled that under the Bruen standard that magazines can be banned as they aren't "arms" or "protected accessories" and thus unprotected by the Second Amendment. Secondly, even if magazines are "arms" they can be restricted under the American tradition "of protecting innocent persons by prohibiting especially dangerous uses of weapons and by regulating components necessary to the firing of a firearm."

None of this shit is real, logical, or supported by current Second Amendment jurisprudence. So now we get to wait for the Supreme Court to finally decide if being told "go fuck yourself, we will do what we want" by lower courts is enough to warrant them doing some work or if the Second Amendment is indeed a second class right.

So, don't get complacent if you don't live in California because once this shit starts happening it takes forever to fight against it. Right now we are 8 years into this and no closer to getting it resolved than when we started.

Dimpled case neck after sizing?

I am reloading 7 PRC using Hornady Custom FL dies. After my 2nd resizing , loading for 3rd time, I noticed some vertical buckling of the case neck as shown in the picture? Didn’t happen on first resizing. These dies are new, less than 50 rounds. Is this caused by a build up of case lube on the neck? Is it safe to shoot? I’m gonna clean my die body and try another round. I am using some older Hornady Unique Case Lube. Never had this issue before loading 300 Win Mag for years?

Advanced Marksmanship Correcting for mirage

I did a search and read what I could find on mirage, but I did not see anything specific about how to correct for it. I typically do not shoot in hot places during the summer months. Last weekend I had a friend in from out of town and he wanted to shoot long range. He can shoot and stacked them at 1000 yards. So I moved him to 1400 for more challenge with the wind. Normally I can get several rounds downrange before the mirage get's bad from the heat off the barrel. This weekend in the desert spot I shoot at it was 90-103F. No shade so the barrel was hot just from ambient temps and the sun shining on it. Normally I shoot out there in the fall-spring until it's too hot.

I let him do all the shooting with my 6.5 CM using factory Hornady 140 ELD-M and I stayed on the glass to give him wind calls and corrections. I noticed he would be good making hits and then after 2-3 shots it was like he was walking all over the place. I confirmed the dope, double checked the wind and everything was correct. Previous impacts were essentially dead center. I stuck the fan in the barrel and cooled it down. I laid some wet rags over the barrel to help cool the surface also. First round impact, second impact then 1.5-2 mils high, 1.5-2.5 mils wind (was getting harder to read the wind in the mirage in my Luepold spotter). My rifle has a 26"Bartlein M40 profiled barrel. It doesn't get super hot usually.

I made a turret correction, checked the weather DA changed by 400' which shouldn't affect that much. It asked for .3 mils less elevation. Let the barrel cool and it would be back on center or close if he made a good shot or my wind call was right. Once he made 3 shots, now it was low. Adjusted elevation back to where it was and elevation was high, or really close with a wind call miss. Light winds 3-6mph from 1:00-3:00 (switching). The only thing I can think of is the mirage was altering where he thought he was aiming. Can mirage affect vertical and horizontal picture?

Precision Rifle Gear My first Ckye pod issue and some nice upgrades!

Had my first issue with the Ckye double pull. Here’s a simple check/fix/cleaning for someone to avoid the same.

The spring/brass pin assembly in the leg got some dirt from the corn or alfalfa field in it. Had issues with the brass pin being able to move eventually just seizing it up in the unlock position where the leg wouldn’t lock into place.

Simple fix but a good place to make a regular service area in the off season

On another note after the cleaning I installed some new pod knobs. Really nice upgrade for anyone looking

New bolt action upper for AR15’s BCA. Budget friendly.

Anyone have anymore info on these?

Uintah Precision seems to have more refined uppers but for the price on these it might be handy to pick one of them up if they shoot and cycle decently.

The only reviews I’ve seen are on their website. Seems they are just as easy to swap a barrel as any AR15 upper.

No idea on the bolt throw or how awkward it is to cycle the bolt.

Not for everyone but tossing a bolt upper in the case with an AR15 in a different caliber might be handy.
