pulling on a discussion over on 24hourcampfire.

People with guns and ammo will determine the value of everything post apocalypse.

In order, guns, ammo, thermal optics. Guns as in squad level rifles, like an M4 with good optics as discussed below.

Repeat as necessary to meet your family needs.

Guns with limited ammo can secure more ammo. Ammo with no guns puts a target on your back. Thermal optics makes it hard for the opposing side to hide.

I think thermal is a better solution than night vision. Night vision allows any hard surface to provide concealment. Thermal requires a thermal barrier to provide concealment.

Oh, and antibiotics. I suspect people will trade ammo and guns for antibiotics, provided you have ammo and guns to keep the trade safe.

JASE medical has a basic kit that I keep current. A bit of cipro and cephalexin goes a long way. Rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide or white vinegar will clean most wounds and prevent infection. Amazon has small packs of Neosporin for your bug out bag med kit. Tourniquet? Israeli bandages, quick clot.

The basics, the basics and the basics, in that order.

You can't barter if you're dead from infection, and most casualties will be from infection, I suspect.

What do you think?

Flustered on What to Buy First

I have my rifle (Sako TRG 22), fill bags/positional gear and all my reloading equipment and supplies. But I need a few other things to really get moving with long range and/or PRS. I have a list of things, which I cannot purchase all at once. Trying to decide what to purchase first to last. What's more important??? Any suggestions and things I may have left out would be appreciated.

List of Needs:
Kestrel 5700 Elite
Chronograph
Spotting Scope
Range Finder
Competition Rifle Chassis
Anything Else?

Please advise on how to donate a rifle for a Scout in need

Fellow hide members,

I've had the pleasure of working with a great human who's been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Jerry is USMC Scout sniper, patriot and general amazing badass person with terrible cards dealt to him.

I'm sitting here with some stuff to trip to help him get through this as painlessly as possible.

One of the items is a howa youth rifle with full length stock that I'd like to find the best market to bring in some cash. I'm not sure on how to set up an account for this or if I just say send him a check.

Jerry has plans for treatment but his chip is going to be about 30 grand.

Any advice is appreciated. I am sure that I can get a local ffl to handle the shipping if that's an issue.

Thanks in advance.

Rifle Scopes Back To Basics

I recently pulled a Nightforce SHV 4-14×56 off my bolt action hunting rifle. The scope was needed for another project. Looking in the cupboard the only other scope I had to replace it with was a Leupold VX Freedom 1.5-4×20. I considered buying another scope but as I don't generally take shots over 300m with the rifle I thought I'd test it in a format to simulate pig hunting. I mounted it up and was immediately impressed with the improvement in handling and weight of the rifle.

Summary of test was:
5 shots each from prone, sitting and standing at 100m - only support was a hunting sling. All shots fired as rapidly as I could acquire a sight picture.

5 shots each from prone and sitting at 200m as per above.

5 shots prone at 300m as per above.

The result of all 30 rounds was 28 shots that landed in the heat/lung area of the target (medium sized pig simulation) 1 shot that would have needed a follow up and 1 shot at 300m that missed. It was raining and I had water on the scope and my glasses so it was as real world conditions as I could get.

I'm going to leave the scope on the rifle. It's much nicer and lighter to carry, no parallax to mess around with and gives me the performance I want out to 300m.

Anyone else use such a basic scope for hunting? How have you found it? Has 4× magnification limited you in the field. Interested to hear other people's experience.

Gas Tube / Barrel Nut Interference

I'm building a new upper and am having an issue with my Gas Tube contacting the barrel nut. Not sure of this is a problem or not. I've built many rifles (15-20) over the years and never noticed this before.

Barrel is a Ballistic Advantage 20" Premium Series DMR profile. Gas block is from BA and is drilled for a roll pin to secure it to the barrel.

Handguard and barrel nut are Geissele Mk16 and Gas tube is Aero Precision rifle length.

Upper receiver is unknown...something I had in my parts bin.

Should I be concerned or just quit worrying and get it together?

If you're going to get a speeding ticket, make it a good one.

Eley match consistency

How consistent is Eley match across the board, I had a lot that shot lights out but I’m essentially out and need to order more. Unfortunately the lot isn’t available anymore and I can’t track it down on the secondary market. Issue is living in NY makes lot testing a pain since ammo must got the an FFL to transfer and unfortunately the fee isn’t cheap per transaction weather it’s one box or a pallet load.

So my question is, can I get away with just ordering a lot that a similar speed to my current one and pray it’s good or attempt to lot test then hope it’s still available once I know it’s good.

Help Needed - Sticky Bolt CLOSE

Alright fellas. Just getting into reloading so I’m hoping that this is an easy fix that’s staring me right in the face, I just haven’t discovered it yet.

Background:

Components - R700 .308 win. 175gr SMK. Varget propellant. CCI 200 primers. Once fired FGMM brass.

Steps taken: decapped using Lee universal decapping pin. Tumbled in corn cob media. Lubed using RCBS case slick. FL resized using an old set of my dads RCBS dies (that I’ve cleaned out with carb cleaner). Set up that resizing die by raising the shell holder all the way up then lowering the die until it touches. Everything felt normal. Retumbled in media to remove lube. Trimmed to as close to 2.005 as possible with cam lock trimmer. Chamfered and deburred. Charged and seated.

I loaded up an 11 round ladder test from 42gr to 45gr of Varget to assess pressure before starting OCW testing. Also to make sure I’m not a complete dummy. Turns out I am.

Shot a 5 rd group with FGMM. Everything fine. Let it cool. Went to chamber the 42.0 gr load and it was hanging trouble chambering. Sticky. I could force it but it was definitely too much force. Tried the next two rounds (42.3 and 42.6) and same thing. Sticky to chamber. Some markings on one side of the projectile that I noticed. Nothing out of the ordinary on the brass.

Do I have misaligned projectiles in the mouths of the cases? Do I need to get a headspace gauge to ensure this isn’t a sizing thing? Am I even on the right path to figuring out wtf is going on?

Luckily only have to pull 11 projectiles. Unfortunately probably need to decap 100 unspent primers.

Appreciate all the help.

Mattress opinions

Been going through a tough stretch the last 6 months dating from back surgery in '88. I was shocked to come to the realization my mattress is 19 years old after some Q & A with neurosurgeon and PT. Yikes. Apparently mattress tech has come a long way and as I read up on them it's amazing.

Just got back from trying to go into the mattress joint in my hood and there were so many people I would have had to spend the entire day there just to get on one. Not a good store shopper it's one of my pitfalls hate it. Pulled the plug and went for a swim.

Anyone do one of these mattress in a box options? Any good? I don't mind paying for a quality mattress and quite frankly I'm not sure what I need exactly. My PT has me set up as a side sleeper now and it's helped a ton, but since then I get sore on my hips. She said that is not uncommon being skinny and that I might favor a softer mattress. Ordered up a TempurPedic 3" medium mattress topper to just try it out b/f dropping big coin on a new bed.

Thanks for any experiences on new designs, mattress in a box etc. What worked, what didn't, brands etc. Thanks BP

Not skittles but a candy cane

Okay last one but this would be funny if it wasn’t so sickening- now I absolutely do not bug into the race bait claims in this or any video. Cliff notes version- already been litigated now the civil trial is starting - chocked then shot someone dead because they believed a Candy Cane was a- nope not a gun a crack pipe . Sounds totally legit. And the civil litigation is just going forward now Because it took nearly 6 years for Qualified Immunity to be pulled from this murder. 6 fucking years of law suits for a court to finally say- “yeah seeing a candy cane in a car and shooting someone is not covered under Q.I.
