Suppressors Its a bird, its a plane....oh, no...its my F'ing suppressor

May this serve as a cautionary lesson to you folks even though this sad little tale does not reflect at all well on my intelligence. LOL

I had just got my suppressor out of jail after 13 months. It’s an Ultra 7 in 6.5mm. And yes, this is the first suppressor I have owned (or used) in my 70 years of life.

I take the fairly new gun (Altus BA in a JAE) and suppressor to the range today to check zero, eye relief, comb height from prone position as we will be in PA soon for a four day SH clinic with Frank/Marc, blah, blah, blah.

I’m a bit distracted by some other fellas while screwing on my Ultra 7 and didn’t notice that underneath the suppressor the Rifles Only cover’s retention lanyard had gotten between the suppressor and the Area 419 uni adapter shoulder. It didn’t help that it was 104F out (real feel…and yeah, it felt real) and I was shvitzing like a fat man in a Russian bath house. It didn’t seem like the U-7 screwed on enough turns but I took the 419 wrench and gave it a tug, it seemed to be tight. So I dropped down and sent the first shot.

Well, I immediately heard a very loud report, felt a lot of muzzle blast, looked up and there was no suppressor on the end of my gun.

I shot it down range.

I thought surely I would find it laying on the grass maybe 3-4 yards down range, maximum. It wasn’t there.

This is a 10 bench only range with a berm and 10 backers at 100 yds at the same elevation as the shooting positions and a smaller berm with 5 backers at 50 yards which is maybe 10-12 feet lower than the shooting position/100 yard berm elevation. So, not seeing my suppressor I kept walking toward my 100 yard target on the far left of the range. And kept walking and looking…walking and looking…walking all the way along my POA to my 100 yard target and still no suppressor!! I spent 45 minutes looking everywhere and nada. WTF.

By this point I’m really sweating bullets and panicking a bit….I have to find this NFA item. One, because I def don’t want to do the dance with ATF again on a new suppressor (and yeah, the $1K is a factor there also) and two, because someone will be mowing that grass and eventually find the can…with their blades. No bueno, that. So, I called up to the shotgun range house where my good friend @GBMaryland was RO for the day. And another fella showed up to shoot and was nice enough to help us look…well, since we were downrange and not leaving until we found the suppressor, he really didn’t have much of a choice but he really was quite willing to be helpful and I appreciated it very much

The three of us looked for it for at least an hour; utterly baffled as to why we STILL couldn’t find it on fairly recently mowed grass square range. And, as part of this we did indeed look along the side of the higher vegetation around the sides of the range, sides of the berms, etc., figuring perhaps that thing really did roll all the way downhill to the low point at the 50 yard line and was stopped by vegetation.

The result…..no talley, no joy, no suppressor. 🤯🤬

I’m looking at my search party and can tell that their motivation had waned significantly and they were about to bag it. So, I took one more trip down range toward my 100 yard target and as I’m passing some high vegetation on the left end of the 50 yard berm, on a whim I started kicking and stirring a couple of feet back from the edge and voila’….I finally found it….50 yards down range in some high weeds!! 50 yards in the air. It didn’t roll there…it was in the middle of a patch of high weeds. It FLEW there.

Now, the terrain drops maybe 10-12 feet to the 50 yard line where I found it so it was a minimum of 35 yards total of actual flight path (can’t believe I’m writing flight path and suppressors in the same paragraph LOL).

And, an Ultra-7 with a 419 Hellfire mount weighs 9 7/8 oz. And it flew at least 35 yards horizontal.

Examining it at the range, it looked like I was lucky and just grazed one baffle…so I looked down the bore, it looked all lined up still, there were no cracks or bulges in the tube at all, so I shot a few more rounds with no issues. But, when I got home I put a Teslong bore scope in there and yep…struck every baffle and a bit of the end cap. Very small chips taken out…but nonetheless. So, I took pics, reached out to TBAC on a Sunday evening with my figuring that they will see it the next morning when they come in. Well, TBAC has GREAT customer focus and @Zak Smith replied to me that night and in his opinion the suppressor is fine and will function perfectly….just don’t do it again (sigh..haha). In discussion with TBAC, if I did want it repaired, it would essentially be an almost all new suppressor just with the serial numbered tube retained (and maybe some other bits…but mostly a fork lift upgrade).

Below are five pictures of the baffles going from muzzle end to pic 5 being the end cap. And I hope this little story of woe was at least mildly interesting.

Facing AR-15 receiver

I have heard of tools for this purpose, but I have never seen one so I am to sure how they work. I assume most of them go into the receiver where the barrel extension goes in an attempt to force the tool to cut the face square with the receiver. It seems to me considering the tolerances involved to make the tool fit in even most receivers it is only going to be able to cut semi square to the receiver.

When I worked in the shop and we needed to flatten out a surface we would use a piece of sand paper on glass. Anybody ever try to face receivers this way besides me?

Bags/affordable sled for refining zeros.

Looking for something to be able to better test the zero on my rifles. Primarily wanting to test the return to zero on different quick disconnect mounts with adjustable tension. Also want to test the accuracy of my different barrels without the me factor in the calculation.

Primarily 556 gas guns. Have a couple 9mm pistols (banshee/scorpion) and if it works with those great but it's not a major factor. Normally zero prone on a bipod or pack/log whatever. My original thought was front and rear bags but in my searches the sled things came up. These interested me since I constantly shoot my mrp far better than my other rifles and it's essential it's own sled.

I always figured sleds were expensive but ones like the Caldwell led sled 3 are around 150$ which seems to good to be true but they seem to get really good reviews. If I'm understanding these you clamp the rifle in and there's a screw for elevation and you just move the sled for windage? Is it preferable to get a sled with adjustable windage if I'm willing to spend a bit more?

SOLD Seekins Havak PH2 6mm creedmoor

Selling my Seekins Havak PH2 in 6mm creedmoor. 24in barrel, gray Seekins stock, arca plate for quick attach to tripod, factory box and one 5 round PMAG.

Has the upgraded Seekins bolt, but everything else is stock. I do have an Area419 stainless brake if interested that I can include for an additional $100. Gun has 340 rounds fired through it and is a fantastic small game gun. I haven’t shot it much in the last year or so, so I’m moving on to other projects.

Asking $1600. Will consider trades for Nightforce NX8 1-8 mil (prefer new reticle), vortex razor 1-6 MRAD, 212 gr 300 PRC ammo, trade toward thermal optic.

Newbie looking for first precision rifle advice

Hey there guys, so I’m a newbie to precision shooting but long time milsurp collector and casual Saturday bench rest 100 yard shooter. I’m looking to switch my gun hobby from collecting to long range shooting though. To me, long range is like hitting a torso size target at 1000 yards.

So, I have been doing some shopping around and the Christensen BA Tactical caught my eye. Thing is I’ve deiscovered the company has a mixed reputation and from what I’ve read maybe overpriced for the quality they deliver. What are your guys’ thoughts on those? Or is there a good alternate? I am looking for something tactical-ish, detachable mag, threaded muzzle, and to be straight honest, good-looking. I’m open to alternate rifles. I don’t want to build a rifle at this point, and especially since this is my first rifle and who knows I may end up not liking long distance for some reason and not want to go too far down the rabbit hole.

The next thing is caliber. I do not have a reloading setup, and am a few years away from having one, so I would like to stick to factory load ammunition (this availability and price are big factors). I wanted a 338 lapua until I realized they’re $4-$6 per shot. Then I leaned towards 308 win until I came to understand that while very available, it is essentially outdated and there are more flat-shooting rounds available like 6.5 creedmor (my current leaning). I would also like to use the rifle for occasional hunting so definitely no 22 caliber rounds. But what do you guys think?

Lastly, I have some questions on optics, but should I post that on another sub-forum/section? Not sure how stringent the rules are with multiple topics in one thread are here.

Any input and advice is greatly appreciated. I don’t have friends into serious shooting nor did I grow up in an area with many rifle enthusiasts or even family that shot. So thank you thank you!

Well, check that one off the bucket list. I got kicked out of a parade.

We did the July 4th parade here earlier in the month and there were somewhere around 7000 people along the parade route. We went with one of our MRZRs with a M240 on the arm mount and had all of my guys dismounted tossing out candy to the kids, and handing out cards and our flyer to everyone as we went. We were trailing behind the HMMWV that was driven by the county Sheriff and Undersheriff and had the county commissioner's on the back of it tossing out candy. At one point one of them came over and asked if we were there to provide fire support.

Later that day there were people like Glen Beck at the local college stadium that I heard had something like 25,000 people attending prior to the fireworks show. It was an absolute madhouse and we basically got chased down by people asking about night vision, the vehicle or wanting a flyer because they didn't get one.

Fast forward to yesterday and about 3 miles over in a neighboring town. There was another parade as the 'local' religious group that inhibits Utah has a giant holiday over the weekend. It's basically their 4th of July, Independence Day and Columbus Day all at the same time. We had decided, based on the July 4th turnout, to attend this parade and the festivities afterwards as well and registered for the event roughly 10 days beforehand.

We started to get our overall plan together this week and waited for Saturday. On Thursday, I get a call from a local number that I do not answer and get a voicemail to return the call in regards to the parade. I call back and am told that we were selected to be cut from the parade because it was going to be so large this year that the local police and fire departments needed it to be smaller before they would sign off on it. I didn't think too much about it and figured we got cut as we weren't a purpose built parade float; oh well.

After teaching my guys all about mission planning and being able to pivot without as much as whining about Plan A not working out, we got to work. Mapping the day's activities, parade routes and the timelines of where any festivities would occur post parade, we put a plan together and were ready on Saturday.

This is where shit got really stupid.

We arrive at the location we picked at a city park where the parade would end. After the parade, this park would have 'activities' for the next few hours and was an obvious gathering point. It made perfect sense to post up there in the parking lot with one of the mil vehicles, candy, flyers and a promo to shoot some machine guns to get some traffic and let the locals know what was in their backyard. Set up was fast, and we even had a police car swing by and talk to us about how cool this was and told us good luck.

As the parade started, I noticed something was off. The parade route had like....1/10th the people the July 4th parade had and the actual parade consisted of shit like 3 guys on the back of a truck playing religious music to a group of weird looking millennials from the local high school theater class on foot doing I have no fucking idea what. This was some Children of the Corn level shit. The only way I could describe this 'parade' and the people along the route, when compared to the party atmosphere of the 4th, is 'Little Dick Energy'. That was around the time it made sense to all of us; we weren't cut because of parade size limits, we were targeted. We didn't know that we were right at the time, but that was confirmed earlier today from someone who contacted me to let me know that there was an actual discussion within the city to exclude us because of the fact that we would basically make their parade all about us and not about lame local religious things. Can't tithe to NV and machine guns, so we can't have that now can we!

So whatever, let's fucking do this. Tent is up. Tables look great. The crew is talking to people. My wife even came to give kids candy.

We're in the parking lot for all of 30 mins until the Karen of all Karen's with a clipboard appears. I could feel her Karen-ness before I even managed to catch her marching over towards us out of the corner of my eye.

In the middle of what seemed like a panic attack, she demands to know what we are doing because she is the park manager. I think the lack of anyone giving a shit just set her Karen level another 2 or 3 levels higher. We explain what we're doing and she goes on about how we weren't in the parade. I go over with her how we were, until Thursday because they had called us. She then denies that even happened. I then show her the missed call and VM on my phone and she confirms that is their number but they had probably called me because I wasn't registered for the parade. Wait...what? How did you call me if I wasn't registered?

You could see on Karen's face that she was caught in a lie. Everyone just stared at her and then she ran off in a huff.

A few minutes later, all I hear is the shriek of Karen as she is holding up her phone like it was Thanos' glove to proclaim that we needed to leave within 5 minutes or 'she was calling dispatch'. Not the police. Dispatch. LOL WTF. Even my wife laughed at her.

I again, ask about the parade and what had happened. She of coarse doesn't want to discuss that but wants me gone or she's calling dispatch. Multiple people, some who were guests at the park who we didn't know, begin to ask her what the problem was as well. She had lost any control she had of her park and an uprising was on the horizon. The absolute best was an older guy in a wheelchair who had wheeld up behind her. I look at her and ask if she was going to continue to stand on the sidewalk as he was trying to get by. She looks at him and nicely says that the wheelchair ramp was over there; he responds with telling her to GTFO of his way because he wanted a flyer.

Seeing that she was a few minutes away from being burned at the stake, she threatens us again with 'dispatch' and that 'they wont be nice when they come!!'. My response of letting her know that I have 5 deployments and that I don't give a single fuck about her, or dispatch, put her into limp mode for a good minute because apparently, no one (including her 11 cats) had ever talked to her like that before.

I tell the crew that we're going to go as Karen is just going to escalate this to the point that she's going to pepper spray herself or something. Technically it is city property, but there are no restrictions to this and we weren't in the park.

In hindsight I wish she would have had the cops come because I have a weird feeling it would have ended up with the cops rolling their eyes and then us talking about night vision and machine guns.

But....I got kicked out of a parade and a park yesterday.

$150 Million Jewel Robbery at the Flying J Truck stop on I-5?

This got virtually no air time but it's one on the biggest jewelry thefts ever. Apparently the 2 guards pull the truck over at the Flying J on the Grapevine on I-5 in the middle of the night and go inside wearing their pistols and don't come back outside for a long time. How much time do you need in a Flying J? Two 27 minute dumps simultaneously? Folks outside are able to bypass all security systems on truck and load all the jewels and watches up and disappear unseen. And no one says anything about this on TV? WTF.
