Arken 5-25x56 thoughts!

Just out of curiosity I picked up an Arken 5-25x56, I wanted to see what the hype was about. Mind you I have have had some high end glass, SnB, Kahles, Zeiss, NF blaaa blaaa..etc.. And I am not a big fan of Chinese wears but I figured the other guy did the dirty work for me already so second hand ain't so bad. Ok, all this said, here's my 2 cents on this optic.

Turrets: Pretty good, they are easy to set, and the feel is nice and positive, with very discernible clicks, I like them, besides the fact that any turret with just white lines as rev indicators kinda suck. It tracks spot on so far, to me this is one of the most important features. A second rev indicator would take the turrets to another level. Score - 7/10

Retical: Very good, it's not too fat at max magnification, it does not obscure your image, it has nice subtensions right where they should be, a nice center dot for precision application. Score 9/10

Parallax: Is not accurate, it's got that Nightforce issue where the numeric value on the turret is no where near the actual distance value of your focused parallax unison. Granted accurate parallax settings are one of the hardest things to recreate. Score - 5/10

Glass: Not bad at all, sure it's not like my higher end optics but it's clear enough to see blades of grass at 500y, at a mile I can just about read the company name on a porta potty. It's got a wide field of view and a pretty forgiving eye box. I would say it's about the same clarity as the NX8 NF series and maybe just a pinch under the MK5HD but closely behind. Score - 6.5/10.

Build Quality: Seemingly pretty good, it's got a solid 34mm tube, it has a solid feel and the accessories that you can get for it are solid like the scope caps and throw lever. The mounts and rings are pretty good as well. A big plus is if it shits on you then it has a lifetime warranty, that beats the SnB warranty by a long ways. Score 7/10.

If you just laid the optic in my hands and didn't tell me anything about it, besides the fact that it's got Japanese ED glass, and just said "test this out," I would have come back to you and said it's probably worth about $1200 to $1400 bucks. Then if you told me that it came in at under $600 bucks I would be shocked. It gets projectiles down range accurately and very affordably. The moral of the story is that this optic is going to shake things up for the competition, maybe Riton, Sightron, Burris, Athlon and Vortex..etc, is it a good scope? YES it is! is it an SnB or ZCO, no it's not, that said it doesn't have to be.

Knife Sharpening?

I am considering doing a 'project' so to speak...that being to create a semi permanent knife sharpening station where I can sharpen a lot of knives rather quickly or with less hassle. This is PRIMARILY aimed at my kitchen, ie cooking, which I often rather enjoy. That said absolutely no one else here takes care of knives or whatever like I would prefer. It took months (or longer) to make them stop putting knives in the dishwasher (for example). We do not have a bunch of 'nice knives'. I have nothing high end or Japanese, but rather cheap(er) but still utilitarian. Still though I like my knives sharp.

The first thing I am looking at is the "Razor Sharp Edge Making System". What that is is basically MDF discs (yeah like the other type of plywood stuff) that are mounted to a bench grinder or bench buffer and you put stuff on each wheel to grind or polish your knife. If you see the videos online it looks very impressive for what it is. If I had high end knives I wouldn't let them anywhere near any kind of electric setup... but seeing how my most expensive cooking knife is probably less than $50 it's no big deal.

I totally get the whole 'heat' thing that a system like this can cause. While I don't have nice cooking knives, I do have fairly nice pocket knives so I do 'get it'. I think my most expensive pocket knife is right around $300 bucks so I do see the appeal, but buying nice cooking knives only to have people put it in the dishwasher or throw it in a drawer with 12 other utensils is a big fat no from me.

Getting a regular bench buffer and installing the wheels on it is very straight forward, which as of now I am tempted to keep it simple. What I DO like however are those little bench top jewelry buffers. The one that I am looking at has variable speeds from 500 to 8000RPM. It takes 4" wheels and is much smaller than a regular bench buffer. One is around 6lbs whereas a big brother more traditional one is more like 30lbs.

If I were to get a smaller one I could use it for many other things--which is mainly why I am considering that, IE more than one use. Plus it's smaller and could be used at the dinner table and then put away. If I do go that route I would have to make my own MDF buffer/polishing wheels. The thickest I could use would be about 3/4 of an inch with about a 4 inch diameter. Plus the arbor size (the hole where the wheels mount) can only go up to 1/4 of an inch. If I go this route it will be all experimental. If I go the 'regular bench buffer' route it's all very straight forward, but it will be a one trick pony. Plus if I did buy a variable speed 'traditional bench buffer' just that alone is several hundred dollars (at least). If I go with the cheaper type it has two modes: stop or go and one speed only.

Anyway I thought I would group source some experiences from the crowd here. Maybe somebody else has done this before or has experience with those types of sharpening wheels, or has a better overall idea. If you have any ideas or think of something that I missed please post it here.

Suppressors Next TBAC choice, think I know.

Picked up a 50% off cert and trying to decide for sure what rifle can I want next.

Currently own
- 22TD
- Ultra 7 CB gen 1 .30cal
- Magnus CB (should be getting free’d any day)

Pretty sure it’s the 338Ultra in BA so I can convert it to CB to fit the myriad of stuff set up for CB I have already.

Don’t currently own a 338 but with an AXMC, I’m only a barrel away.

The SR is cool but have had zero problems with the CB and nothing full auto in the inventory.

That would really round out the options on hand I believe, anything I’m not thinking of and overlooking?

SOLD Badger Ordnance C1 34mm scope mount black

I’m selling a 34mm Badger C1 in black that I no longer have a use for. It’s in fantastic shape and was only mounted and shot briefly before I sold the optic that was in it. I’m looking for $215 shipped in the CONUS

Looking to sell my AICS Chassis. I originally had a Zermatt Origin SA 308 in it, but I'm looking to go back to a more traditional stock. This chassis started out as with Green skins in it's normal pistol grip configuration. I added tan skins as well as the thumbhole grip kit. - Badger Ordnance IMUNs, I believe this is the 20MOA rail version - Very rare afaik
- Anarchy Outdoors Thumb Rest
- Velcro Patch on the right side for a 2-round Holder from Short Action Precision (not included)
- (1) Large stock spacer, (1) Cheek spacer, All of the original AI hardware/screws and plastic inserts
- (2) Original AI Front Block
- (1) Atlas bipod Spigot Mount (Works with the Atlas BT10 V8)
- AI Original Bipod Stud Mount (For Harris Bipods)
- Badger Ordnance Picatinny Rail Section for IMUNs - "ILARK 310-11" (This does not work with AT Chassis, it will need some modification to fit)

Skins:
- Full Pistol Grip TAN set, Stock is modified to work with a monopod, with Thumbhole Kit (currently installed)
- Full Pistol Grip GREEN set

Looking to get $1400 OBO Shipped and Insured for everything. $1000 without the IMUNs. Paypal/Venmo/Zelle

What to do with this stuff??

I’ve got bins full of stuff that should be sentimental. Sports, academic awards, trophies, medals, plaques newspaper articles, photos, videos and a bunch of other crap I’ve been hauling around for over 20 years. At one point, this stuff was cool, but after whacking my shin on an 80lb custom fabricated iron behemoth of me doing a wrestling move I was known for in HS, I’m ready to throw the whole lot of it in a dumpster. It’s feeling like a bunch of excess baggage that doesn’t really matter anymore. Never had kids to show it to, I help coach a few kids at the local HS/ college teams, but this junk isn’t actually helping anyone. What do you guys do with stuff like this?

question to see general thoughts on this

so several years ago i was in a pawn shop , seen a SKS in a crappy black folding stock , for giggles i asked to see , right off the get go a 4 digit chinese type 56 , in the crappy lighting i seen the other parts matching the reciever , i thought it was a early sino so negotiated a price and made the deal

get it home and started to see alarm bells , machine marks around all serial numbers , clearly a renumbered rifle , clearly not a sino so clearly a bad buy , thinking it was a bubba serial renumber posted pics in a sks forum and to a small measure of relief , NOT a bubba job , was a Israeli capture rework that was importedin a batch

everyone , oh its a shooter and always will be , not worth anything as collector value just enjoy it , well i dont collect "shooter" rifles , and my sks's get shot no matter what niche they fill

i sat on it for what be 4 years and started toying with the idea of a Bubba'bushka faux Dragonov , which ruffled the feathers of just about all who had told me it was basically a turd ,lol , i went ahead and did the full transformation over the summer which gave me a gun from sour grapes to one i will enjoy

do you fall into the hardcore no bubba anything or do you feel certain circumstances are ok as long as tastefully done

Argentina Dove hunting

Would highly recommend.

Our days have consisted of:
7:00am- breakfast and coffee, hour to two hours.
8-9:00am - in the field. Bird boy carries a case (500 rounds), shotgun, and a 5 gallon bucket to the "hide". The hide can be anything from netting to tree branches to a good bush.

11:00am, 500+ rounds later you've shot many doves. I've been averaging 50-60% hits. Local kids are showing up to pick up all the dead birds because free meat is better than no meat.

12:00pm- lunch and cervezas, then siesta.

2-3:00pm- siesta is over, back in the sprinter van to a field.

5:00pm, 500 rounds later and hundreds of dead doves it's back to the lodge for appetizers and muy cervezas.

8:00pm- dinner and cervezas.

9:00pm, bedtime, Ibuprofen for the bruised shoulders.

As a bonus, they hate parakeets and they are fair game. If the kids can find a wounded one they'll run over and hide behind you in the bushes and fuck with it to make tons of noise. Then all the parakeets will keep coming in and they find it highly entertaining when they get shot.
From what I could understand as my Spanish sucks, the parakeets harass people and they love seeing them shot.

AI .308

Quick question. I recently bought my first AI rifle. A new AT in 308 (thanks for the great deal EuroOptic). I noticed that there is more internal length in these mag than in the AICS mags. Haven’t reloaded in a few years. Is conventional wisdom still stretching the round out as long as possible within the constraints of the mag? I’ve had some great 308s in the past, and have some decent data from those as far as where I’m going to start with load development, but if anyone was willing to share what they’re using for overall length, or charges of varget for Sierra 175’s, I’m a factory AI-AT 308 with the 24” barrel, I’d love to consider that as well. Thanks!
