Broken-down man wants gas+dB AR suppressor advice

As opposed to suppressing an AR the absolute most (damn the torpedos!) I am asking about which suppressors on a 5.56 AR have the best compromise of:
  • the least gas blowback + best suppression at the shooter’s ear
For reference I own a PWS MK116 (16”) Mod 1 upper (for the curious, on a Mod 2 lower). It uses a long-stroke gas piston arrangement, and I bought it specifically to minimize le gas. But don’t focus too hard on that…I may buy other uppers including DI.

1695236904112.jpeg

Due to eye health issues, I haven’t yet shot the rifle, but if the universe abides, I may so get to soon.

Note: The decibel reduction isn’t an idle masturbatory concern. My left ear has been confirmed by a doctor to have something wrong with it. I lose hearing in the left even if I double up and shoot unsuppressed. Shooting anything, even out in an open field!!! Can’t be around unsuppressed gunfire for the same reason.

Right ear is fine. It appears I can double-up the left ear and shoot suppressed and be gtg. I’m in my 50’s but apparently am actually 85 inside lol.
  • Don’t really care about muzzle suppression
  • Ditto flash suppression. No NV/thermal.
  • I shoot varmints like prairie dogs
It seems the Huxwrx Flow 556k would be in the running. Others?

PSA: Join the Gun Owners of America if you haven't already. And get others to join as well. Twin GOA victories in NM and ND. More lawsuits on the way.

Last week, coalition efforts led by the Gun Owners of America helped secure a restraining order against the Democratic New Mexico governor's extremely unconstitutional and overbearing weapons carry ban.

Almost simultaneously, in a slightly less covered case, the GOA also helped a North Dakota gun store owner facing a forced shut down order from the ATF secure a legal victory which saw the ATF backing down and rescinding the order.

The GOA is also preparing more lawsuits to be brought against the ATF for their "Zero Tolerance" policies that are forcing legitimate gun vendors to close their doors over the most trivial paperwork errors.

Boudreaux. (Because we need a bit of fun around here)

Boudreaux was in an advanced Biology class at ULL and was taking his mid-term exam. The last question was, “Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.”

The question was worth 70 points or none at all.

Boudreaux was really hard pressed to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote:

1) It is the perfect formula for a child.
2) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3) It is always the right temperature.
4) It is inexpensive.
5) It bonds the child to the mother, and vice versa.
6) It is always available as needed.

And then Boudreaux was stuck.

Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote:

7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground to where the cat can't get to it.

Boudreaux got himself an A.

Maggie’s WWII Vet

A couple of buddies and I always go to a local bar on Wednesdays for $2.00 16oz draft beers, a pretty good deal in todays economy.

I noticed a group of about 6 people come in, there was an older couple, both with walkers leading the group. I noticed the older gentleman was wearing some sort of veterans hat, and we discussed if he might be a WWII vet.

When I went to piss, he had taken his hat off, and set it on the table, and it clearly said, "WWII Veteran."

When we were getting ready to leave, I told my friends I was going to talk to him.

They were eating, and I excused myself for interrupting them, and explained that I only wanted to thank him for his service.

Everyone in the group was very happy for what I was doing, and it almost brought tears to my eyes speaking with him.

I have no idea how old he was, war was 1939-1945............if he was 18 in 1945, he is 96 today,
probably older than that.

There aren't many of them left, if you get a chance, thank them.......

2A ALERT: Biden to announce creation of executive level gun control office on Friday Sep. 22, 2023.

Main themes: Universal background checks to be forced onto ALL gun sales, both vendor and private. ATF redefining rules to make private sellers, including those who are just selling one or a few guns out of their collections, also subject to ensure that purchasers get background checks.

----------
----------
President Joe Biden will announce the Office of Gun Violence Prevention on Friday and the new office will be coordinated with Mike Bloomberg gun control proponents and others.

According to the Washington Post, “The new office will report up through Stefanie Feldman, the White House staff secretary and a longtime Biden policy aide who has worked on the firearms issue for years.”

Coordination in the office is expected between the “White House, the Community Justice Action Fund and Everytown for Gun Safety.”

Shannon Watts, a Mike Bloomberg affiliate who founded Moms Demand Action, praised the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, saying, “If this announcement is, in fact, the creation of a single point of leadership on gun violence in the administration, it’s a very big deal for the movement.”

She added, “A governmental focal point dedicated to creating a framework for overseeing national policy, research and resources would be more than symbolic — it would be a significant turning point for the movement.”

On August 31, 2023, Breitbart News reported that Biden’s ATF was using executive rule to expand background checks to the point of nearly being universal.

In a press release that accompanied the announcement of the proposed rule, Attorney General Merrick Garland said:

“The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was passed by Congress to reduce gun violence, including by expanding the background checks that keep guns out of the hands of criminals. This proposed rule implements Congress’s mandate to expand the definition of who must obtain a license and conduct a background check before selling firearms.”

The ATF’s rule will redefine language so that there is not simply a category of Americans buying and selling guns from and to one another — as they have done since 1791 — and a category of Federal Firearms Licensed holders (FFLs) selling guns at retail. Rather, every seller will have to prove he is not trying to make a profit, or he will be required to ensure the purchaser undergoes a background check before taking possession of the firearm.

Are the fast twist barrels a thing of the past?

My first precision 22lr rifle was built by Ga Precision back in 2020. Had Mullerworks send them a 24” mtu blank in 1:12 twist. He was recommending 1:13 but i wanted 1:12. They got one done for me and sent to gap to be built on rimx action. Gap built full blown custom rifle that is a work of art. It never performed very well at 50 yards. Shoots most ammo between .3 and .4. Shoots around 1-1.25 at 100. But it out shoots all my other builds at distance. It shines at 250 and out. Just wonder if anyone else has shared same experience.

Help with 30 Cal. Can

Thanks for the help all. I need some help picking a new can. I have a Nomad L and love it, but it is heavy. At the time of purchase in 2021 I was seriously considering the Nomad LT, but was scared of titanium. I now want a smaller, lighter can and have boiled the decision down to:

Stainless:

  1. Nomad 30 - if you would have asked me 12 months ago, this is what I would have purchased and sort of compared everything to
  2. Enticer S - Seems to be a great can at a great price, but don't love that it appears to be not as tough as the nomad based on firing schedules and barrel minimums
Titanium: I am not a huge mag dump guy, but still somewhat fearful of limitations in the future for classes, etc.

  1. Nomad Ti
  2. New Silencerco Scythe - Being all titanium, I am a bit scared of how it will hold up
  3. Enticer S Ti

I suppose first I need to decide what material I want then decide on a can.

If titanium, which one will be the most rugged? I am planning on using the can on a 18" .308 an 8" 300 Blk and various full length 556

I definitely chase decibels (hints the Nomad Lt purchase), but now want something that performs well that is shorter and lighter.

4/5-port Muzzle Brake with straight ports and wrench flats..?

Does anyone know of a self-timing 4/5-port muzzle brake out there with straight ports and wrench flats..?

I've been running a 5-port Insite Arms Heathen (Gen 1) for the last couple of years and it's been great, very little blast back at the shooter while still reducing recoil, and no headache after shooting... except for me having to fight with a strap-wrench every time I install/uninstall it if I don't want it coming loose on me.

I haven't found a "self-timing" brake yet that will stay tight without having to use a strap-wrench to really get it torqued on there. I've seen just about every popular self-timing brake come loose at bad times, either on me, or other guys I've been in a squad with, this includes brakes from A419, APA, etc. That "hand tight" shit is bullshit.

So for my next brake, I want wrench flats or another solid way (besides a strap-wrench) to take it on and off and tighten it down.

Lastly, I don't want any more concussion back at the shooter than I'm used to with the Heathen (which is one of, if not, the best out there for that)... so that usually means brakes that incorporate some straight ports, the brakes with all the ports angled back at the shooter are completely out for me, I like my hearing and driving home without a headache after the match more than that extra few percent of recoil reduction thanks.

I was looking at the ACE brake, dig the hex at the muzzle (in leu of wrench flats), don't dig those tiny little hex screws on the collar, and not sure they'd hold up to the brake being torqued on and off over time?

Any ideas? Does anyone know of a brand/brake I'm not aware of or am overlooking..?

TIA

Donated NM Muzzy Tag

Folks- I have a tag I can’t use that I’ve donated through NMFG and they have reached out to Holy Pursuits and are looking to set a hunter up with it. As we are getting down to it I’m hoping to help get it processed by letting folks on here know and maybe a deserving person will see it or someone will know someone etc etc. Tag is Elk-3-159. I believe the process would be reach out to Holy Pursuits if you or someone you know is elligible.

Carrying a folding knife in a pocket? Instant solution for protecting your pockets and making access to the knife faster.

So, like most people here are doing, you are carrying a folding knife as part of your regular EDC, right? Doesn't matter if they are passive swivel types, slick assisted openers, or automatics, they are simply the best choice for complete concealability.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. They have belt clips built into them. But the clips on many models, even high end knives, are not exactly reliable on the long run and I know many people who have lost knives and flashlights relying on the clip alone. One of my fellow contractors had his brand new Fenix PD35 TAC light wiggle loose from it's clip and drop over 3 stories from a rooftop HVAC unit we were working on and it's headcase shatter completely. He ordered a new one and I reminded him to get a Fenix hardshell holster for it as well. I actually gave him one of mine because I have a shitload of them and it doesn't hurt to have a few extras on standby... And clips still stand out and anybody trying really hard will notice that you are carrying a knife.

Pockets, especially dominant hand side pants pockets, are the best way to carry a folder for fast deployment if need be. But that presents it's own set of problems. One, a heavy duty folder continuously riding around in your pocket is going to wear a hole right through them after a while. And two, they are loose inside, which means they can settle horizontally into the bottom of your pocket and that makes reaching for it a bit awkward, especially if your work pants have just been freshly laundered and are a bit tight.

Well, that is not a problem anymore.

INTRODUCING: THE REVOLUTIONARY POCKET PROTECTOR. Nah, just kidding. It is just an ordinary faux-leather smartphone and passport/ID top opening wallet that you can get at any discount store. Remove any of the partitions inside normally set aside for IDs and such because you are not using it as an ID case, shear off any top straps if they have any. Then take one of those cheapo nylon drawstring bookbags, cut a nice big piece of fabric out of it, fold it up tight and press it into the bottom of the "holster" to beef up the bottom a bit, and now you got a perfect inside the pants pocket carrier for your heavy duty knife.

shopping.jpeg

The carrier keeps your pockets from wearing out. No more ruined work pants.

The additional bulk of the carrier expands your pocket a bit, and makes reaching into it much easier too.

The added tension and smaller space in the carrier also keeps that folder upright all the time with the swivel end down. You can be assured that thing is always in the position for instant drawing.

And on top of all that, these things are cheap. If they get buffed up and worn to tatters over time, simply get a new one...

This is my SOG Seal XR, a beast of a folding combat knife, inside my ad hoc pocket carrier which is around $2.50 or so and takes about 2 minutes to modify.
