Dumb questions from a big idiot

I've been shooting for over 30 years but mostly just for fun and the occasional deer hunt, but recently decided longer range precision shooting might be fun. I'm probably wrong and I will probably spend a bunch of money on it, not be good at it from the get-go, and then, like the impetuous child I am, give up on it too quickly and move on to some other temporary obsession.

So I have this action I figured I'd use. It's a Remington 700UML (NOTE: for those unaware, this is not the 700ML muzzle loader, which is a different beast altogether, this is the "Ultimate" ML, which I am told is essentially a Rem 700 short action receiver without the cut in the bottom to accept rifle cartridges from a box magazine. I initially picked this up with the goofy goal of assembling a smokeless muzzleloader but I think I'd rather go another way with it. Maybe without that cut in the bottom, it's a little stiffer which might help in the precsion department? Or maybe I don't know what the h-e-double-hockey-sticks I'm talking about? Probably the latter...)

Since I'm not a gunsmith and always looking to take the easy way out, I figured I'd try one of the Rem-age style barrels, which have the Savage-style locking nut which apparently makes it easier to headspace.

Anyway, as you know, all decisions are best made under pressure and without research. So I'm looking at this Black Friday sale from x-caliber and thinking of placing an order for a barrel before the sale is over, but there's a crap-ton of options on the barrel that I don't know how to answer, and some I'd never considered or even heard of before.

I picked .308 because I'm old and not interested in learning about new calibers (but mostly because off the shelf ammo is easy to find; I am not a reloader)

I think I've convinced myself a 22" bull sporter would be good (there's also a 'heavy bull sporter'...?) Why? I don't know; I figured a shorter barrel might be stiffer but a longer barrel gets a little bit of extra velocity, so picking a bull profile might help get some of the stiffness back. Plus the extra weight would help. I'm not really planning on trekking across the arctic with it strapped to my back so weight isn't a big deal. Would that profile be really hard to find a stock to fit?

Breech counter-bore: I figure I'm using stock remington extractors so .700 is fine? Does .715 allow me to run either extractor or do I have to pick .700 for remington and 715 for M16 style?

Cal/Twistrate: I randomly selected 1:10 because I saw this chart ( https://www.ammoman.com/blog/308-twist-rate-chart/ ) and consider myself an expert now (just kidding). But what I have no idea about is 5R vs 6 is. What does that even mean?

I know this post will offend a lot of experienced shooters but thanks to anyone who takes pity on a clueless newbie and posts some general rules of thumb to get me pointed in the right direction. The above silliness notwithstanding, I'm not afraid to read and learn but I'm also looking to slap something together and play with it and see if I can get it to work, just for fun.

thanks and happy Thanksgiving

So, Victoria Australia, how was your election? (Teflon) Dan is the Man?

This part of Australia had COVID lockdowns only second to communist China in severity. And they voted for more?
People are waking up (literally) but still ASGH. Lets see how this is covered, or not. Lets see if these are people unhappy with more forced vaccinations and discrimination against the unvaccinated along with a push for "100% renewables in Victoria", or if there's fire with this smoke. Of course, just like Brazil, don't expect MSM coverage.

Trying to decide on ammo

Since you guys helped me figure out my magneto speed I was out playing today. Used a sensitivity setting of 6 except for on sk rifle match. It was about 100 fps slower so I had to increase it to 8. Cz455, yo Dave spring, lilja 21” barrel, krg bravo and a form 1 suppressor.
Ammo. Sd. Ed. Avg
Cci sv. 22.2. 80. 1036
Wolf mt. 23.6. 85. 1052
Eley club. 17.4. 54. 1045
Sk rifle match. 29.1. 102. 950

Was shooting from a bench at 100. Granted my shooting is lacking lately I’ve been busy for quite awhile so just getting back into it. But the eley did shoot the best at 1.6” 10 shot group. With out going crazy expensive is there another ammo that might hold a tighter velocity range? Also gotta hang some lighter gongs on my range. The 1/2” plates weren’t making a sound or budging.

Best hunting scope under 2000.00

  • What is the platform for the scope? Bolt Action, Tikka, 300WSM
  • What cartridge are you shooting? 300WSM
  • What is your intended use for the scope? Hunting
  • What type of conditions will you typically shoot in? Daylight, Lowlight
  • What are the typical distances you intend to shoot? 100-600 yds
  • Are there any specific specifications you would like? Illuminated, Lightweight
  • What is the price range you can afford? $2000 or less

I'm trying to put a new scope on my 300WSM. This is going to be used for hunting purposes out to 500-600yds. Shots can be all the way down to sub 100yds as well. I keep coming back to the Leupold VX-6HD 3-18x50 in the Illuminated Fire Dot or TMOA reticle also looked at the Burris XTR iii in SCR Illuminated. Just wondering if there's a scope out there I'm missing on my short list before I pull the trigger on one. I've went back and fourth between SFP vs FFP. I want this to be as geared for practical hunting purposes and situations as possible. Any feedback or suggestions???

Why is it impossible to duplicate a great shooting load?

Had a couple great loads last week 5 shots thru one hole. This week I load up the same and as usual both suck on paper. In the past 6 months I have only been able to duplicate one load, and that load I repeated 3 more times. And it continues to shoot great. Nothing changes. Same brass and prep. Annealed. Full length sized. Shoulders bumped .002. All trimmed to same length. Mandrel used to set neck tension. Same seating depth. Same GMM primers. Primer pockets cleaned. Same powder charge double checked on the A&D scale. And also as usual the other loads I tested with single digit SD/ES shot the worst. Am I missing something here?

Night Vision J-FB Fusion Binocular Review

These Fusion binoculars have been mentioned last year and news/rumors have been in circulation since. I am excited to say Visir Inc. is now offering The J-FB (Jerry- Fusion Binoculars) for sale; the first commercially available Fusion binocular system.

LET THE RECORD SHOW, I GOT SOMETHING FIRST BEFORE HORTA. Man that felt nice to announce ;), now on to the review haha:

Due to the physical constraints with cramming thermal integration into a I2 unit, I was concerned with the length of the unit. Wearing something that feels like pinnocio's nose x2 would certainly feel awkward and probably not good for the neck.

The first thing you notice about the unit is it's the size and weight, it comes in under 21oz (with L3 tubes) and is actually shorter than a PVS-14; I was impressed. Compared side by side to a PVS-14 and PVS-23 (F5050)

Getting into the nuts of it, went out with family last night during the new moon. So there was no illumination except starlight. Side by side comparison of the J-FB and the PVS-14. Can you tell which is which?

The picture with pup was the J-FB. Thru the tube of the J-FB, thermal overlay pod. I got that first time looking thru NV "wow" feeling all over again the first time I look thru the J-FB. Warm fuzzies and tight pants all over again. Full thermal and outline modes

Having used them for the last couple of weeks, I REALLY like them and think they are spectacular. Alot of small details went into this one that made if feel ever so slightly more like a premium product. The battery pack cable, as can be seen, is coiled so its self-retracting. The cable also came with caps that were tethered on to them, not seen as I removed them. A very nice presentation box and soft case. The unit has a bluetooth remote with velcro backing so you can attach it to anywhere. You can adjust the thermal overlay settings and NUC the sensor without having to constantly fiddle infont of your face; very convenient.

Now on to points I found a bit lacking. The image produced by the J-FB is competitive, as can be seen from the comparison photo; but the glass is definetly the main drawback. The glass was designed to make the unit extremely compact. But this also leads to a tighter eyebox and shorter eye relief. In order for me to observe the full 40 degree FOV of the tube, I set the bino about 1/2" away from my eyes. You still have a comfortable amount of peripheral fov, but its definetly not optimal. In highlight environments, objects around the edge of the FOV will exhibit what appears similar to chromatic aberation. This appears only in very high light, surburban-urban, situations and I wasnt able to pick up this affect properly on the camera. So its defiently not something thats glaring, but figured worth mentioning. Last there seems to be some artifacts/issues with the thermal overlay. Did you catch them within the videos? I knew what they were and could barely catch them, so more likely than not you didnt catch them lol. I've been told this was a software issue, and Infiray is sending me an update as we speak. So as long as Infiray's software fix works, I consider this a non issue and will edit this part of the review.

Despite the drawbacks listed, the unit works period. The fact that its not vaporware, will set you back well under 20k depending on tubes, and its performance; its pretty fantastic.

New Hampshire living?

My home base is in N. Idaho and I like it here alot, but not much contracting work here for the work I do. There is definitely more contracting work and better pay on the East Coast, of all the states I think New Hampshire would pay well, has the geography I like and is probably similar to Idaho weather wise. I like how they are the Live Free or Die state and I think I could like it there.

Any 'hide members here? How do you like NH? Pros and Cons of the state? Weather any good?

I'd probably head over in the Spring as pulling a trailer 2700 miles in the winter doesn't sound safe or appealing to me.

This alone speaks volumes for immigration policies.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer made some startling admissions last week about his immigration views: “We have a population that is not reproducing on its own with the same level that it used to. The only way we’re going to have a great future in America is if we welcome and embrace immigrants, the Dreamers and all of them, because our ultimate goal is to help the Dreamers but to get a path to citizenship for all 11 million or however many undocumented there are here.”

I didn't need to add on the additional text of the quote. I did so just to show the thinking DEMS/LIBERALS are REALLY using then the "frosting" on top to make it sound like they are human beings.
