When a suicide isn't......

Okay....yea....10 stab wounds from behind.....WTF do you mean suicide!?!?!? If there's one thing to say about tech these days, you got to admit the depiction of the knives on the body can't hurt your case. Now...let's get the Dog on the hunt.

Bang for Buck Hunting set up

Good evening marksmen! Stepped away from the rifle game for a few years and fell into bow hunting. Lost track of calibers and custom builds, manufacturers and PRICES!!
Think I narrowed down caliber to 6.5PRC.
Looking for a lightweight hunting rig Hunting only.

Sorry to bug y’all but I consider you guys the best informed audience.

I’m not talented enough nor do I have time to build my own, or plug and play a tikka or Remington.

Hoping a few of you have spent some time behind a quality accurate hunting rifle and had good results down range. Looking to spend approx. 3000
Fierce, Seekins, Proof etc…

Any suggestions

Thanks y’all

Wondering how much time we’re wasting?

After reading the three volumes of Bryan Litz’s series on “Modern Advancements in Long Range Shooting” I’m starting to wonder if there’s an intentional effort among component makers to make reloading more complicated than it needs to be(major profit motive). From a statistical perspective there doesn’t seem to be a truly efficient way to arrive at an ideal load for a chambered barrel without exhausting a significant portion of it’s effective lifespan.

My takeaway is that you should load for desired muzzle velocity with best practices in mind. Test a series of loads for an indication of ideal barrel harmonics and then go about shooting your rifle. Learn to read the wind and practice for positional shooting.

Are we wasting far to much on chasing something that isn’t obtainable? That being the, “ideal load”?

All thoughts welcome.

This was mentioned in the big Ukraine thread, but since this is The Hide, a near record shot kinda deserves its own place.

Couple of Brit papers and the NY Post have picked up the tale.

Presented for your careful and considered analysis:

The supposed official Ukrainian source for this feat:

I don't speak Ukrainian, perhaps someone can translate.

Archived, just in case it disappears

Shockingly, some comments in the NY Post article are doubtful this shot actually took place as claimed! 😲

Who better to carefully analyze this skillful use of what was doubtless a Dragunov or perhaps the mighty 6.5 Kreedmorski, than the experienced practitioners of the art here?

Gunsmithing A quickie sponge camo job

Just wanted to show the DIY guys how simple it is to re-paint or paint your stock with 40 bucks worth of stuff from Lowe’s.
I know a ton of you guys do this in your sleep, but thought some newbs might see how easy it is to do one of these without spending 175 bucks.

Mocked everything up, then sanded down the single color stock with 320 grit. Primed any areas that needed a bit of body work.

Painted the stock flat black. Bought some camo paint and cheap sponges from Lowe’s. Bought some rattle can clear in matte finish.

Sprayed the edge of the sponge in varying colors. Cleared. Took literally 40 minutes.

Precision Rifle Gear The G2 Heathen with Integral Tuner

image.jpeg

The G2 Heathen with Integral Tuner

With the Heritage of our proven 5 Port Original Heathen the NEW G2 features:

50% increase in 1st port volume

24 degree increase in upward angle cut-out of port window to reduce muzzle rise

12% increase in "floor" or bride area on the bottom of the brake to reduce blast downward, decreasing ground and debris disturbance

Front wall of the 1st port is angled at 22 degrees upward

An included removable Brass Tuner

This tuner excites me, lately, I have been asking all the top guys who use Tuners what their settings are, how much they needed to "tune," etc, and each one said not very much. In fact, the majority said their tuners were set to 0, and the addition of the tuner itself was enough to bring the load in line. To test this theory, I added a tuner to my Valkyrie, and sure enough, just adding it brought the load into tune.

So when I saw Harley posted this, I had to talk to them as I love my Heathen Brakes, and use them a lot.

I mean how cool are these tuners according to Insite very little movement moves the node. Or you can decide you don't need to tune in order to use the brake so you can remove the weight.

Low Velocities After New Barrel

New here so obligatory apologies if this is in the wrong place. I recently had a Carbon6 barrel made in 6.5 PRC for an old trued 700 short action. 22” 1:7.5 twist, button rifled. It shoots lights out, several groups at 1/4” during break in and sight in. 123 rounds down the pipe as of right now. After break in I chronod it at an average 2720fps, essentially the same as the creedmoor I intended to replace with the PRC. All testing has been done with hornady factory 143gr ELDX Precision Hunter and 140gr ELDM Match.

Now I knew cutting the barrel down to 22” would result in lower than published velocities, and I expected that but not such a significant drop as I know folks with the same length that are touching around the 2900 mark. I do not currently reload but I’m not opposed to it if I can get the desired velocities safely.

I guess my questions are, is there anything I can do to help speed it up and make the PRC shoot like a PRC? I’m a decently capable backyard tinkerer so I’m not afraid to do a little work on it, this is just an issue I’ve never run into so severely. Is it worth investing in the reloading equipment to make up the speed or am I stuck with 6.5 PRC prices to get 6.5 creedmoor balistics? If I can’t get much improvement I’d rather just sell the gun and start over with a custom action and everything.

Load development questions

New to reloading so forgive me. Just curious on a few things. When you do load development, let's say by starting with a low powder charge and working your way up, how many rounds/groups do you shoot per powder charge weight?

After you have found a load you believe to be accurate, do you verify with a larger group?

I have been doing 2 groups of three shots per charge weight, from low to max, and then after finding one I play with seating depth, and I feel like I'm not getting any actual data from them because the sample size is too small. Would I be correct in saying this?
