Shooting until catastrophic failure - KAC SR-15

DISCLAIMER

I stumbled across this youtube channel a while ago and I started watching it. The guy raises money with his Patreon, he buys an upper with his proceeds and then mates it to a full auto lower. He dresses up in a lot of body armor and starts mag dumping until there is a failure. His most recent video that I watched last night is his test of the SR-15. I am not shitting on KAC. He shoots every single upper until there is failure. Some of you may have a different opinion but as best I can tell, heavy profile barrels last longer than thinner and piston rifles (short and long stroke) tend to last longer at this test then internal piston.

KAC SR-15 has a melt down

Staball Match very dirty?

I have been messing around with Staball Match as a replacement for Varget in my 6BR so I can drop powder on my 750.

I have been finding it seems very dirty and carbon is building up FAST in my chamber. Groups start out good - at least 0.5moa and great SDs of around 8 on a clean barrel.

After about 150rds, brass gets hard to eject. Not heavy bolt lift, but hard to pull bolt back. I noticed that i get a carbon ring building up on the outside of my brass necks.

I stuck my bore scope in the dirty barrel/chamber and the carbon in the chamber seems crazy.

I never see stuff like this with Varget, even after long cleaning cycles of up to 500rds. I knew this stuff would be a little bit dirtier but this surprised me.

Help me decide: Barreled action or Barrel + Action

I'm thinking about assemble a new bolt action rifle recently and did some research on parts.

I searched on PVA, i see their barreled action for Zermatt Origin is 1750 and for TL3 2299. Let's say, if I choose TL3 the action itself is 1300 by Zermatt (might be a bit cheaper from other vendor) and the barrel sold by PVA would be around 600. There'll be like 300 bucks differences.

Some other businesses like preferred barrel blank will install barrel onto the action for free if you buy both from them.

If the custom actions / parts are deemed to have very tight tolerance, what's the point I buy a barreled action over I just buy those parts and put them together with proper torque?

Check this out

A buddy of mine game this to me for Christmas. From what I can tell, it's a 4"-50cal. shell, mfg. in 1918. It's got anchors stamped in it so I'm guessing it was fired in a Navy cannon. It's 35 inches long, brass and the projectile weighed a cool 33 pounds. The max range was 15,000 yards! I love guns and extremes and this thing makes me giggle. I can only imagine the sound!!!

SOLD Unfired AI ATX updated 223 option

I have up for sale an unfired 22’ dark earth ATX that I bought new without a barrel. It would be new in box condition but it got a couple small dings in the safe at some point, visible in one of the pictures. Selling as I don’t have time to shoot this one which is why it’s unfired a year after getting it. I have another AI which is the action the rounds on used barrel were fired from. I do have some barrels that I would add to it if buyer wanted a complete rifle.

Barrel options

1. I have a 223 conversion; bolt body, barrel and 2 mags that I’d sell with this but only with the rifle not individually. $1700

A. 6.5x47 27” Bartlien heavy varmint from black canyon customs with around 350 rounds on it. Threaded 5/8x24. Cerekoted midnight bronze. $600

B. 6x47 unfired Bartlien heavy varmint from black canyon customs. I’ll have to measure this one it’s either 24 or 26”. Threaded 5/8x24. Cerekote smoked Bronze ? $600

C. 6br I bought this one used on here a while back and have never shot it. Bartlien MTU 26” 1:7 twist black with 5/8x24 threads. 600 rounds on it according to seller I got it from $400.

I'm having a bad month

About a month ago, I started having pain in my neck, and then my left shoulder. My muscles were really stiff, so I assumed that was the issue. After about a week, the pain was so bad that I went to the ER. They did an x-ray and just said it was arthritis in my neck. I called my RA doc and she gave me some gabapentin and an order for PT.

I went to PT, and in the process of evaluating me, she tore my *right* rotator cuff. Unbelievable. Then I had screaming pain in my neck and left shoulder, and my right shoulder.

I went to an ortho doc and he did x-rays on my right shoulder, neck and left shoulder. He told me I needed MRIs of neck and both shoulders. I showed the MRI reports to a friend who's a surgeon and he said was going to need surgery on my neck and right shoulder, but the neck was the priority. He sugarcoated it a little, but got me in to see a neurosurgeon the next day.

I saw the surgeon and I need a laminectomy and fusion on C2-T1. I'm getting a catscan on Monday and seeing the surgeon again on Wednesday to setup the surgery. He said I'll need to wait until sometime next year to fix the right shoulder. In the meantime, my spinal column is pushed against bone so closely at C2-C3, he told to be very careful. A trip and fall or car accident would be, in his words, catastrophic. I told my wife to drive safely on the way home, or she might be be wiping my ass for the next 20 years

On top of that, we had a family ski trip to Canada planned (and paid for). I'm trying to talk my daughter into going with my wife's family. I hate to ruin it for everyone.

And I know this is rididulous, but I just put together a new rifle and bought a bunch of reloading gear over Black Friday. I realize that it's not important, but it's just irritating that I don't even know when I'll be able to get behind a rifle again. If at all.

And the pain is so bad that I can't sleep. Which means my wife can't sleep. And on top of that, she's having to work and pick up the slack for me. I don't really have the personality to be waited on or to ask for help. I feel miserable for everyone.

TL;dR I'm screwed

Tidbits About Bullet Seating - Mandrels, Neck Lube, etc.

I'm working on testing methods and products and gathering data on bullet seating. I'll be posting some comprehensive data once I get to an appropriate point of collection, but I just got some interesting information that I though was worth sharing.

I bought an AMP Press a number of months ago and have been testing different neck lubes, different processes, annealing vs. not, etc. Tomorrow I'm heading out to BLM land to do some ~2k yard ELR with my 300, and some closer in stuff with my 6 BRA, which means tonight I'm doing a bunch of loading. For my 300, I tried two slightly different processes:

Process 1:
- Anneal
- Size
- Lube necks with moly (topic for another post, but I've found moly to be the best neck lube on annealed brass)
- Mandrel
- Trim
- Primer, charge, seat

Process 2:
- Anneal
- Size
- Lube necks with moly
- Mandrel
- Trim
- Lube a second time
- Primer, charge, seat

Below are the graphs from the AMP Press showing the difference. I did 16 on process 1 and 46 on process 2.

Process 1: Single neck lube before trim, primer, charge, etc.
15-Dec-2023 18_39 1x moly.png

Process 2: Neck lube before trim, then second neck lube before primer, charge, etc.
15-Dec-2023 17_19 Lot PR0359 double moly.png

Notes:

- On process 1, some of the plots spike at the end because I needed to re-zero the press height
- You can see that the extra lube step on process 2 pretty dramatically brought in spread. It's about a 30lb spread on process 1 vs. a 16lb spread on process 2.
- I'll post the muzzle velocity results after I get back tomorrow.
- I'm expecting somewhat of an SD improvement from the set of process 1 vs process 2, as I've already documented a correlation between seating force SDs and muzzle velocity SDs in my Mandrel Musings thread.
- For my 6 BRA, the two different plots I've got show a stark difference - includes annealing vs. not for one firing. But there is also one other factor that plays a significant role that was unexpected. More on that later.

How many rounds on this receiver?

Looking for some input here. Purchased a BA from a member here. Was told specificlally “350 rounds on barrel and receiver”. This is what I received today.

I take good care of my shit so maybe this is just what 350 rounds of abuse looks like. But what do yall think? Anyone have a receiver that looks like this after 350 rounds?

Nitride is chipping in several places. Bolt stop also has excessive play in it.

Optic objective lens very close to barrel

Wondering if this height will be a problem, such as recoil causing contact between barrel and optic?

I like these lens caps and would prefer to keep them. Obviously my clearance would be better without them. I’m running low rings because it gets the optic line-of-sight to perfect cheek weld height for me. I can slide 4 stacked pieces of computer paper in there (between barrel and optic).

See attached photo. Thanks

USO B17 Thicccc Girl Scope Mount?

I’ve tried Scalarworks and ADM and neither have enough distance between the rings to fit on my 3.2-17 USO B17.

It’s a 34mm going on an LMT 6.5cm.

Who’s using something that’ll fit? I know on the LMT I could use rings but I’d rather not. My calipers measure 2.9” absolute minimum and that’ll be pushing it.

Thanks!!
