What is a gunsmith

Found this on Quora of all places.

What is a Gunsmith?

Being a Gunsmith is a lot of things…

It’s cleaning 30 years worth of gummed up 3-in-1 oil and powder residue out of a an old .22.

It’s mounting a $50 scope to a $3000 rifle, because that’s what the customer wants.

It’s mounting a $2500 scope to a $300 rifle, because that’s what the customer wants.

It’s fine tuning the trigger on an Anschutz target rifle that the owner will be going to the Olympic tryouts with.

It’s figuring out why a hunting rifle that used to shoot 1″ groups, now shoots 6″ groups.

It’s making a new spring for a revolver they quit making parts for in 1943.

It’s explaining that grand-dads old rifle that has hunted for 3 generations, and never been cleaned or maintained, is beyond saving… (restoring would cost $3000 for a rifle you can still buy new for $700)… then doing the work anyway.

It’s refinishing a wood rifle stock with meticulous sanding, fitting, filling, and finishing until it’s like a fine piece of furniture.

It’s taking a poorly fitting scope mount on a fine rifle, and fitting it properly to make the rifle shoot like a fine target rifle.

It’s building a target rifle from an action and a bucket of parts.

It’s welding on a new bolt handle and polishing it.

It’s cutting and fitting, and chambering a new barrel to a rifle.

It’s taking a rusty, ugly, old pistol from the 60’s, and refinishing it in a “bright blue” to look like it was made yesterday - and the owner expecting to pay $50 for those 100 hours of work because Colts factory brochure from 1962 said it was $50.

It’s taking a hunting rifle that the owner has given up on getting to shoot, and narrowing your eyes at it and saying to yourself “Oh, you aren’t beating ME!”.

It’s cleaning up an old .22 for “Dad” so he can give it to his daughter for Christmas… it was dads first rifle, and it’s her first rifle so they can go shooting together. THAT job you do for the cost of the parts…

It’s filing a new front sight out of a block of steel for an old coot who is convinced he knows how tall the front sight should be, and then re-doing it six times because he won’t listen when you told him the first five times how tall it SHOULD be… Him you charge triple time for… stubborn old bastard…

It’s dreading seeing yet another old Reminton 760 pump rifle come into the shop.

It’s your eyes lighting up when a gorgeous old German Scheutzen rifle comes in and you get to examine it.

It’s that feeling when you’re the first one to take the lockplate off an old British Snider rifle made in the 1860’s, and see the chiseled initials of the maker inside… and from all the crud you cleaned out, you KNOW you’re only the second person to ever see it.

It’s being a young ladies first shooting instructor, and seeing her face when she shoots her first “perfect” score on the target.

It’s a damn heap of work, and a lot of self-teaching in half a dozen major trades… Machining, welding, jewelry making, metal finishing, woodworking, wood finishing, etc…

If none of these in this list make you smile and say “Yeah, I want to do this…” then nothing I say is going to convince you, and you shouldn’t bother.

That TacOps High

I have admired Mikes work from the moment I saw it. I finally felt compelled to shoot him a message, just to say that I am at the baby stages of building a rifle, and that I really appreciated the quality of work he did. Basically a fan letter. I don’t know what I expected him to say, but he replied just as I think everyone I’ve seen said he does. “Call me” So I did. And we had an awesome conversation. I can’t say thank you enough. Just a stand up guy, all the way. I hope to someday have both the reputation of work and craftsmanship, as well as of integrity and personality that he has gained.

That’s all, I just had to give props.

Recommendations of keeping your firearm related business in 2024

Just some suggestions if you want to keep your business. Not sure what I am talking about? Do your homework and research World Economic Forum Agenda 2030.

So here are the recommendations:

Rename your business to something "environmental protection related" or delivery related. All credit card sales should never be categorized to VISA as sporting good or firearms related.

Because you will be limited on food consumption, travel, and not permitted to own lead; label nothing as hunting. Instead call it vegan blending equipment.

Remember that electric vehicles will shut off if you don't have a travel permit to drive beyond 15 minutes from your home. So calling things "carbon neutral " will justify the activity and help you get your permission.

Just a few things to help. Especially those in Australia.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee Introduces Bill Criminalizing ‘Conspiracy to Commit White Supremacy,’ Criticism of Non-White People.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) introduced a House Bill criminalizing “conspiracy to commit white supremacy,” which includes criticism of non-white people which influences an individual to commit a hate crime.
The legislation, H.R.61 “Leading Against White Supremacy Act of 2023,” introduced last Monday by Democratic congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas, seeks to “prevent and prosecute white supremacy inspired hate crime and conspiracy to commit white supremacy inspired hate crime.”
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has introduced a House Bill to criminalize “conspiracy to commit white supremacy,” which includes any criticism of non-white people that influences (such as something published or said online) someone who commits a hate crime. https://t.co/QD93bVJmA9 pic.twitter.com/ROwLtvYIha
— Ian Miles Cheong (@stillgray) January 15, 2023
The congressional bill, which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary, states that someone engages in a white supremacy inspired hate crime “when white supremacy ideology has motivated the planning, development, preparation, or perpetration of actions that constituted a crime or were undertaken in furtherance of activity that, if effectuated, would have constituted a crime.”
Accordingly, “conspiracy” to engage in white supremacy inspired hate crime entails the publishing of material “advancing white supremacy, white supremacist ideology, antagonism based on ‘replacement theory’, or hate speech that vilifies or is otherwise directed against any non-White person or group.”
It also calls for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to gain “authority to conduct operations and activities pursuant” to what it deems “necessary and appropriate to interdict, mitigate, or prevent such action from culminating in violent activity.”
The bill would grant the department authority to “prosecute” persons engaged in such actions, with “records of white supremacy inspired hate crimes” maintained and annual reports provided.
In response, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) accused Democrats of “making a mockery of the First Amendment.”
“In case you weren’t aware of what the Democrats were prioritizing in the 118th Congress, just take a look,” she wrote. “When they’re not bankrupting our country, they’re busy making a mockery of the First Amendment.”

— Lauren Boebert (@laurenboebert) January 16, 2023
“Who wants to tell her about the First Amendment?” asked conservative attorney Harmeet Dhillon.
“Congressman Sheila Jackson Lee just introduced a bill that would make it a federal crime for White people, and White people only, to criticize mass immigration or to say anything that she claims would vilify ‘a non-White person or group,’” wrote one Twitter user.
“Sheila Jackson Lee should be introduced to the Bill of Rights. Particularly the first amendment pertaining to free speech,” another wrote.
“This is a disturbing, yet not surprising, piece of #AntiWhite legislation,” yet another user wrote.
Previously, Jackson Lee has argued that institutional and systemic racism “taints and spoils” the way America treats minorities, adding that there are “aspects of America’s laws, America’s structure as relates to the black community in particular and other communities that is racist.”

SOLD Trade 2 HK MP5s

I have two HK MP5s I dont feel like messing with the brace crap, so I’d trade for higher end optics. BUT that doesn’t mean I will take low offers, I’ll just keep ‘‘em and SBR route, eventually. One is the SP5 and the other is the K, shorter model. Both only used a few times and bought new by me.

looking for ATACR‘s. 4-16 or 4-20 mil xt and similarly mid/higher end Mil optics. Looking for at least 2 plus cash depending on what optics etc.. they are still selling for 3200 on GB., but I’m willing to work out something that works for both parties etc. I’m in Tampa, FL for face to face also.

I'd sell out right for
$ 2800 for the 8" model and
$2600 for the K.
K doesn't have the tri lug or paddle mag release but the paddle can be installed and the part is 90$ from what I found.

NIOA Acquires Barrett Firearms Announcement

Just say this in the news. Good or bad? Thoughts, gents?

Australian defense contractor NIOA has expanded its global reach with the 100 percent acquisition of the industry-leading rifle design and manufacturing company, Barrett Firearms.

In announcing the deal, NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa said the two family-owned companies came together out of a shared commitment to quality, innovation, loyalty, and mission.

“NIOA’s association with Barrett dates back to 2008. We have been inspired by the story of Barrett and admire what Ronnie, Chris and the family have built over more than four decades,” Mr. Nioa said.

“It’s been a story of hard work, perseverance, and purpose culminating in the delivery of critical capability for the men and women of the US military and its allies around the world as well as exceptional products to law enforcement agencies and civilian markets.

“Together we share the same mission - combining our expertise and family business values will ensure Barrett carries on building the finest products in the world.’’

Mr. Nioa confirmed the company would continue to operate under the Barrett brand as a separate division within the NIOA Group alongside NIOA Australia, NIOA New Zealand, the Australian Missile Corporation and the group’s investment in joint venture company Rheinmetall NIOA Munitions.

All management and staff at the Murfreesboro manufacturing facility in Tennessee have been retained and production will continue as normal. Over time it is expected that manufacturing activities in Murfreesboro will be further expanded.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Mr. Nioa also announced two key leadership appointments – current Barrett President Sam Shallenberger has been promoted to the role of Chief Executive Officer while long-serving Barrett Chief Operating Officer Bryan James becomes President.

Ronnie Barrett and Chris Barrett will provide ongoing support as executive advisers to Barrett and the NIOA Group.

Barrett founder Ronnie Barrett said “Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Barrett story. Rob and the NIOA team have great respect for the legacy Barrett has created as the leader in long range precision rifles. It’s reassuring to know Barrett will be in good hands with a family-owned company that is focused on manufacturing and delivering world-class firearms and munitions to a global network.”

The Barrett acquisition marks an exciting next chapter for NIOA as the company’s entry to the US market where it has long-standing trusted relationships with American companies such as Vista Outdoors, Leupold, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, and the Winchester-operated Lake City ammunition plant.

Zero Compromise Optic 2023 ZC527 MPCT2X and 10 MIL Turrets

05/19/23: 10 MIL and MPCT2X are starting to ship! Get in line for the pre-order here!!!

05/08/23
: And the first ZC527 10MIL NLE have arrived!!! Extremely impressed with this option with it's wider spacing and heavier clicks.
I personally picked the ZC527 10MIL NLE with the MPCT2X to compare the the MPCT3X reticle that is one of my favorite reticles. - Richard
More to come!

10 Mil Turret
Many competition shooters have been asking us for a redesigned turret to only provide 10 Mils
per turn on the elevation and we are now ready to release this turret option on our best-selling ZCO 5-
27X56 rifle scope. Utilizing 10 Mils per turn provides more space between the clicks thereby making
identification of the exact click much faster under time. This turret option is definitely going to be a hot
selling item for the serious competition shooter as well as many others.
We have kept the main row of numbers the same size as our current turret engraving and made
the next two rows above it slightly smaller. Since most target engagements are made within the 10 Mil
span of elevation those numbers are critical to see easily.

MPCT2X reticle
In order to remain on the leading edge of our primary market we must always be aware of what
our customer base is requesting for reticle designs. In order to meet the ever-evolving trends we have
done some updating to our original reticle offerings. The new MPCT2X has incorporated some concepts
similar to our MPCT3X which is our current best-selling reticle.
The upper half of the field of view has been opened up with only 3.0 mils of the vertical
crosshair extending above the center aiming point. This change is requested for shooters to see trace
more easily as the bullet tracks toward the target. We have also very slightly opened the space around
the center floating dot to be the same space as the MPCT3X. Additionally, we have redesigned the 0.2
Mil graduations throughout the reticle to provide a clear 0.5 mil mark on the horizontal stadia along
with line length changes to visually distinguish the different graduations. Finally, floating dots at every
whole mil point also make identification of these points much easier to find under time constraints and
create less confusion.
