WTF is up with this Apple iOS 7 update?

Frank what did you turn off, that your battery isn't effected? It is definitely draining mine.

I am available for an upgrade (rockin' the iPhone 4). I was going to wait to see if the "iPhone 6" was going to be a bit better than the unimpressive 5.
When I saw what apple did by releasing the 5s and 5c instead of releasing a 6, I decided I would let my 4 crap out and replace it with a Samsung 4 or whatever it is. I have several friends who have them and they really like them.

The iPhone is the only apple product I own. Until the last two updates my phone worked flawlessly. I was eager to load the new update on it hoping it would run better. Well, it runs worse, so I think it will probably meet an untimely death in the next few weeks. I don't use 1/5 of the stuff my iPhone does, I just want a phone that responds quickly to my inputs and take decent photos. I can't stand it when I'm typing an email or scrolling thru my contacts and the phone seizes up for a few moments. My iPhone didn't use to do this. The new update made it start doing it all the time.

Interesting that all other phone creators caved to NSA except apple, your iMessage is secure because they refused to hand over the encryption keys.
Your facetime is secure.

Can't say that about any other carrier or any other phone.

:) No disrespect intended, just a lil something I read when I investigated which companies caved.

Companies aren't allowed to disclose whether or not they 'cave' to the NSA. It's part of the process, the "court" rubber-stamps an NSA warrant and the company in question is REQUIRED to give over the info and is further REQUIRED to NOT disclose that they have received a warrant. A huge company like AT&T/Apple is going to have a backdoor installed where in ALL data you generate is going to the NSA as you generate it, it's why they have data centers that are capable of storing many petabytes, the data is already there and then they just need a warrant to access it. The only companies that didn't cave, such as Lavabit, had to shut down in order to avoid the data capturing.

In other words, your Facetime/etc. ISN'T secure and never will be. The take-away point here is that the only way to find out which companies caved and which ones didn't is to see what companies are still operating and which ones aren't or in simpler terms; currently-operating = caved.

Good ol corporate America, build a nice piece of expensive junk then keep the software that runs it all fucked up... forever. Should I win the lotto I may buy one...or not.

I have an ipad 4. I downloaded iOS 7. It works great and has brought nothing but improvements in functionality. I'll leave aesthetic opinions to the women.

The battery drain can be more severe, depending which apps you run. When you upgraded to ios 7, basically all your apps are now using "location services". Go to system settings and enable the location icon to see when this is being done, and disable any apps that don't need it.

Also in system services Disable:

"diagnostics and usage". This sends info to Apple on everything you have done on your iPhone periodically so they can "see" what customers are doing
"location based iAds". This allows stores, malls, ect to track your shopping habits and personalize little ads to send to you
"frequent locations" keeps a database of your local towers and hotspots used. I don't like that at all.

Also check your iCloud settings and disable any items you can do without. the new ios backs up alot of what you type through "documents and data"
Turn off "background app refresh" for any app that doesn't need it (I would leave on for apps like a weather map)
You can also enable "reduce motion" in general settings to save battery by reducing the 3d effect

I hope this helps

The update dropped the ball and I would not be suprised if a service pack or new update comes out but with the tweaks IOS7 works just fine and it's been reliable 7 days running.

Of all the people on here, I am surprised at your defense of the fruit company(FC), being that you work in Network Security. FC is the NSAs wet dream; FC has been compiling people's entire lives into portable devices for the 'easiness' of the user, and I admit they do make 'pretty' devices, but the fact that they intentionally limit what the end user can do with their device drives me away from their products. Want more memory? need a new battery? Let alone programs, or 'apps'. Or FC's yearly, new device that incorporates 2 new features that the 'free market', came out with over a year ago. All data is mined now, but FC's devices are the most unattractive when it comes to having to use it.

Plus the new OS is actually making people nauseous, LMAO!
Apple iOS 7 makes some users quite literally SICK. As in puking, not upset ? The Register

Tweaking this seems to give it the "old" look on my phone and ipad. The goofy icons can't be changed but the overall look /feel is more like what I am used to.

Settings -> General -> Accessability -> reduce motion -> Off.

Settings -> General -> Accessability -> increase contrast -> ON.

Settings -> General -> Accessability -> larger type -> On.

The I phone series was a cartoon from the get go. I swapped over when the 5 came out, actually got along with it well. This change in nothing big, not even close to what I did from android to Itard.

ps, haven't played with it a lot, but enough to get by with email, text, notes, doc swap, etc and nothing has really changed. Actually I find it a bit more navigable.

OK, in the previous version, you could click the bottom button on the iPhone and an array of active aps would appear. You could turn them off by tapping the red dot X. What the heck do ya do now?

Double click the button. The list of apps you have used appears. Slide your finger bottom to top to get rid of them. Tap them to use them.

If you want to delete an app the procedure is the same: hold your finger on it and the 'x' will appear.

White devils voodoo, bwana.... I have a cell phone I only use it to call home, when I'm running late, or bring home supper. 34 days left, 2,120 minutes before I have to spend another $19.95 for 90 more days. Everything else can just wait.

It is quite amusing that many of the folks sporting an apple I phone also talk shit about Chinese made crap when it comes to almost any other product (especially optics)

I hate the looks as well, and the improvements are things apple finally incorporated that have been around since the original iPhone if you jail broke it. I'm sure once we get used to it we will like it more, and I've deleted several email while trying to reply so I hate it right now. They need to give us the options of going back to old color scheme and icons.... Think that would make lots of us happier.

Not only is this an Apple & oranges comparison, it's stupid at best.

Companies can spec any level of quality they want. When was the last time you saw a High End Spec'd Chinese Optic ?

Speaking of which, name a high end optic company that doesn't source their glass from China.

I have an original iPhone 4 I got shortly after they came out and I have never updated it, not a single fuck given. I don't even know how. The only time it's a problem is when I try to download an app and typically it comes back with an error saying it requires something 5 or newer, I once again give not a single fuck and move on. I will give fucks when I can no longer surf the hide and pornhub from it, I gotta get my 5 free videos per day.

You miss the point.
Folks will send responses to a thread about chinese made products, denigrating those products, using their chinese made phone that they can't seem to live without.

It's called irony, nothing more, nothing less.
It was only an observation.
You may think it is stupid to make an observation, but I do not.

Irony is the use of words to express other than their intended meaning. Irony can also be the juxtaposition of an actual result and the intended result. Neither are present here.

Making an observation isn't stupid. But making a stupid observation may indeed be stupid.

Following ils 7 install, I found i had to swipe right to left instead of left to right to delete email, safari will now allow opening more than 8 windows, and I can access the quick menu by swiping top to bottom on any screen.

At the end of the day, I could have lived without it on my two year old iphone 4(nada).

The essential feature of irony is the indirect presentation of a contradiction between an action or expression.

I find that folks using a device wholly manufactured in China as a means to ridicule devices wholly manufactured in China to be ironic.

I would find that to be "Situational Irony"

Situational irony, sometimes called irony of events, is most broadly defined as a situation where the outcome is incongruous with what was expected, but it is also more generally understood as a situation that includes contradictions or sharp contrasts. (Lars Elleström, Divine Madness. Bucknell Univ. Press, 2002)

Thanks for your attention and cloaked insult.

What you are describing could be hypocrisy: The behavior of the person using his phone not conforming with his belief about the quality of that phone.

The essential element to irony is in fact that the surface meaning and underlying meaning is not the same. Also essential is a statement contrary to what is meant.

I like your sourced info, but situational irony is a literary or dramatic device. Every contradiction or sharp contrast is not an irony, even in novels.

'Irony' is sometimes improperly used as a synonym for 'incongruous', meaning an odd or unexpected result. But for irony to be present in the difference between what is expected and what occurs it, by itself, must reveal some sort of deeper lesson about human failings.

Using a device manufactured in China to ridicule devices manufactured in China is simply an economic fact of life. If I drive my Ford to the car dealership to complain about my Ford, that is not ironic.

Let me restate this, APPLE S TATES: They refuse to respond to the warrant on the iMessage and Facetime, refusal to respond to a warrant is generally the same as refusing to cave.

I do assume that anything I do online is public. If you speak into an electronic device it is heard. That is the safest assumption!! For that matter, we had a laser device in the 1990's that hits a window and p icks up voices based on the vibes to the window/air pressure so even talking in your own house is not safe!

So far they can't read your mind though :) :)

I like my i-phone, the fact that they have 57% marketshare should indicate that others do as well. And that they vett all of their apps so you don't get virii etc....

Samsung galaxy, Droid - all fine stuff, but the I-phone is simplest to use. One guy I know has an app to program his drone (Hexacopter), you can do a lot with an iphone.

He also d ownloads telemetry, has google earth running and shows a map of the flight path he took. There is no app for that for droid...because 57% of the people use an iphone these MFG's used apple apps instead of 5 other flavors.

Room 641A - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia <-- Still believe them? They've been lying to you since at least 2003 and smart money would say those lies have been going on for decades.

"The US government, with assistance from major telecommunications carriers including AT&T, has engaged in a massive illegal dragnet surveillance of domestic communications and communications records of millions of ordinary Americans since at least 2001."
https://www.eff.org/nsa-spying

The list of AT&T being in bed with the NSA is as long Google has servers.

Furthermore, how realistic do you really think it is for a company to 'refuse' a warrant? The only company I know of that did was Lavasoft and they went out of business rather than honor the warrant. Simple fact is that the system is set up to make it illegal for a company to disclose that they've even received a warrant. So you'll never know the real story but based on their history, AT&T has and will always cave.

I don't know what all the complaining is about, I recently updated my phone and it works great.

Jellybean 4.1.3 is the one you're all talking about right? :D

I was wrong on the market share pe rcentage, apple claims 18.5% at this point.

Citing a wikipedia article LOL - that's funny. Let me go write one that says what I want without any facts to back it up, I'll put some obscure references to some opposing view opinion article and call it fact.

I "believe" Apple is headquartered out of Ireland so they can pay 2% federal sales tax instead of 35%, what can the US Gov do to them? THey could put tariffs but you can't require something to be made public after the fact.
That sucks IMHO.
Lavasoft vs apple? Ha.

I heard someone say because of all the complaints, Apple might let those that want to switch back to the old operating system. Anyone else hear that?

OK, lets cite the NSA themselves: Hows this for an obscure reference? Its even Top Secret...

Gee Wiz... What are those funny little blue icons that look like an apple with a bite taken out of it?

I did the update and haven't had a problem. IMHO, it's still better than microsoft, I turn it on and it works. I guess I'm simple like that!

My update was a nightmare. Three days of re-updating, running backups, and reloading data lost between the day of update and "last" backup. Lost a lot of info and the phone is slower and the operating functions look like a toy now.

A buddy of mine, just had the same nightmare you did. He ended up doing a factory reset and basically starting from scratch with what was basically a brand new phone.

is it safe to upgrade my ipad mini to 07 now?

Do you feel lucky? LOL
I left my iPod on 6.13 while seven has a cool flashlight app built into it and I didn't need that on the iPod.
Are are about 11 tweaks that you should turn off to maximize efficiency on iOS 7. Google it and if you are up for it.I think the graphics were better in the old operating system.

LOL I dunno what to say about that, I don't believe everything I read on the net.

For the record, it is safe to assume that if you are on the net or an electronic device you are being listened to and/or recorded - I would never argue that!
I work in IA, Information Assurance, and previously worked in Military Intelligence as an EW repairman fixing the electronic devices that are used to listen TO you.
I know that can pinpoint you with the guardian aircraft and directly listen in on your cell phone.

I am merely stating that apple claims they h ad to follow suite for text messages and cell phones but refused for Imsg and Facetime.

Assume it's not true, youi are safer that way.

To quote Robert Dinero from the movie HEAT:

Assume they got our phones, assume they got our houses, assume they got us, right here, right now as we sit, everything. Assume it all.

In MI our quote was "Just because you are p aranoid does not mean they are not out to get you".

So, leaving Wikipedia and fake TS stuff out, assume they DO have you.
All I said is that apple claims t hat they refused to cave to the Imsg and facetime.
