Suppressors If you were a betting man... (Sierra 5 content)

The big brown truck delivered my Dead Air Sierra 5 tonight and having never been shot through, I thought it'd be worthwhile to take a good, hard look at the rear baffle and weld. Now I've read you cannot tell anything by looking at the weld on the last baffle but after taking a hard look at mine, I don't think that's the case. Pretty sure mine has a large crack that's almost half the circumference of the can. And you can see there's something there with the naked eye. Additionally, it's not "even" all the way around and there are differences in various sections of the weld that again, can be seen with the naked eye.

We'll start out with the good portion. You can see the "gold" bead which goes around the circumference of the tube/baffle. You can see, on the right side, it starts to turn blue.

Now the bad. Rotating the suppressor, you can clearly see a dark line which is a crack. Don't worry I zoom in later. This can be seen with the naked eye. You're also able to see a section where the weld bead has a texture.

Here, the crack stops at about the 2pm position.

Let's zoom in! I'll sort of work my way around the rim.

Now here's the thing...if this is indeed a failure point and it's visible to the naked eye, one could imply a number of things that potentially happened to let this suppressor, and others like it, out the door. None of them make the manufacturer or Dead Air look good.

I could be wrong. Maybe this is "normal" but I don't think so. I'm going to reach out to Dead Air and send them the photos. I'm also going to reach out to my suppressor vendor, who had this can for 250+ days, knowing the issues the can was having, and didn't at least take a look and contact Dead Air about their stock on hand. All of them should have been sent back for inspection and the vendors that carry them, should have insisted on such.

I really should have insisted as well but believed there was no way to tell if it'd fail just by looking at it. This leads me to believe differently.

I do have a video bore scope with a flexible arm and I may try to use it and see the underside of the baffle. Will report back if that works. I'll also try my standard bore scope and obtain a few images that are even more close up with a higher resolution than my digitally zoomed in iPhone pics.

Next step, I install the mounts on both rifles this'll be used on and check to make sure everything is aligned correctly.

Optics FS - Nightforce ATACR 4-20x50 F1

I have 2 brand new Nightforce (C644) ATACR's for sale that are still in the original sealed box. I was gifted a scope and that changed my plans, now I'm selling these. $2900 each and I'll pay the shipping. Save on taxes. Sorry if the photos are bad, I can retake upon request. I have bought and sold here before, you can check my profile reviews. I can upload pictures that have my username or whatever you request. Not in a rush to sell.

Surprise: ATF rewriting more rules

I'm sure ATF will fairly weigh the public's opinion while reinterpreting the law, despite the fact that neither creating nor interpreting laws is within their authority.

Shotgun wing shooters

Question for the bird hunters. Does anyone make a tracer round for shotguns? Don't laugh to hard and hear me out. I absolutely suck with a shotgun, like can't hit the broad side of a barn locked inside the barn. Ones I do hit is purely accident seems like. Just don't know where the heck I'm hitting, way to high, low, infront, behind. Theory is if I knew where shot is I would know which corrections to make. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

ES too high

Every time I shot 10x 5-shots groups, there would be about 3 groups with ES over 30. sometimes they go into the 40s and 50s range.
I have tried Lee collet die, Redding full length sizing die, Forster Neck bushing + Full length size + mandrels (2/1k and 3/1k tension), Imperial Dry Wax. Did not see any difference.

The best 10 groups are typically with virgin brass where my average ES is 20 and SD is 10. but I still get 1-2 groups with ES of about 30.

My steps:
- De-prime
- Wet tumble
- Dry brass in oven for 1h at 200F
- Lube case and Neck bushing + length sizing
- Mandrel
- Dispense powder then seat bullet

What else should I do?
Thanks for any help.

Suppressors How to Suppress AR 5.56 the Most

Hello everyone,

I've been reading dozens of threads and I'm having a hard time coming to a solid conclusion. It seems there are two camps:

1. Flow through, proper 5.56 caliber suppressor is the best because it suppresses at the shooters ear but also reduces port pop
2. Max volume is key, a large 30cal plus suppressor can perform great on an AR in 5.56 because volume is key and the larger bore diameter reduces port pop

What I'm trying to do is suppress my varmint gun the absolute most with 40-62 grain full power ammo. The plan is to dedicate a suppressor to either a 16" 1:9 twist or possibly even a 20" 1:8 twist barrel but I'm flexible. This isn't a range gun at all and will be shot maybe 200 times a year realistically. Here's my criteria:

Don't care about weight and don't care about size (for the sake of the argument at least)
Don't care about full auto rated, gun wont be shot that much
Don't really care about blow back gas (can i tune the gas down? not experienced in this area)
100% willing to tune the gun to the suppressor. Have experience assembling ARs, can easily change gas block, buffer, BCG, barrel, etc.
Would prefer a direct thread mainly for simplicity's sake and because i wont be swapping the suppressor at all.

If anyone could share their experience and recommendations for combinations of suppressor/gas tuning equipment to suppress an AR the most, I would greatly appreciate it. Having trouble filtering through the internet threads. Yes I'm pretty much willing to throw a 9+ inch can on it and call it a day haha.

Thank you.

Almost free cell service

My cell phone died the other day, figured it was time to check around for better plans. USCellular offered me unlimited plan for $40 per month. Then if you sign up for auto debit you get $10 off. Then if your get Social Security (or a bunch of other options) you get a $30 government rebate. Looks like All Ill pay is tax on the $40 and the rest is free.

FWIW

Another valuable perk of being old is the National Parks Senior Golden Eagle Pass. Gets you free admission to any National Park and its good for life.

Light tactical rifle concept

I have read a lot of how most people like short barreled bolt actions and the general purpose concept. This makes me think about the Rem 700 LTR.

I’m thinking something close to a GAP gladius or XM-3 with some weight savings.

I have a 24” heavy rig in 6.5 creedmoor and am thinking about cutting it down to 18”or 20”. I just don’t use it that much.

I hunt occasionally and do some local competitions. Most of my shooting is targets, coyotes, and shooting deer in my garden.

Thoughts or advice? What do you have and what would you change?

Post some pics if you have them.

My community rose to the occasion.

my area of Michigan was hit by a series of tornadoes last Wednesday- from F1- some claim F3s - with winds in excess of 110mph. Just north, next little town had 5 fatalities some from cars being sucked off the overpass and thrown into the woods . It was a 140-150 mile wide storm front .
Most now have power restored we got ours back last night .
There are literally millions of trees down, thousands of homes damaged wide spread flooding and miles of high tension lines down and poles gone .

At dawn the next morning I was out to check on the peoples I care about that I couldn’t get a hold of - cell towers down, one text I received after the storm took 12 hours to show up.
The first person on my list was a dear old friend - 78 years old and lives alone . When I got to his little farm he already had the mules out and was using them to drag trees out of neighbors driveways and off the road .
We’ve been cutting years worth of fire wood this week.
But back to the story - my community that I love living in and am proud to be a part of - the week was filled with neighbors helping each other - strangers helping each other . I’ve even heard two stories about people letting complete strangers shelter in their house - it happened so fast 9:50 pm they issued tornado warnings and the first one was on the grin my county at 9:55; .
It many not be devastation like Maui or Florida this morning but it’s as close as I’ve ever seen. Reminds me of the hurricanes I experienced in North and South Carolina. And in MI that just doesn’t happen on this scale
Stores that had generators were open and no price gouging that I’m aware of - many stores giving away water - many local communities had water supplies contaminated- some areas - the city of Canton got 10 inches of rain in 2 hours .

As corrupt and broken as my state is unfortunately becoming out here in the farm county people still care about their neighbors and I saw people towing cars out of ditches and fields - people helping people hook up or fix generators- a local mechanical service did small repairs and easy hook ups for free - a week is a long time to be without power !
A local furniture maker handed out free donuts and water and coffee at some of the stores they supply merchandise to.
No looting no theft - no price gouging.
I knew I could count on my group of neighbors as we are always there for each other to see the same across the grain belt of my state and even in small and midsize towns was fantastic.

He didn’t just banhammer a couple guys trying to list sale ads in the bolt rifles section. He took out both the Ace of shades and the Jack from the club in the Deck de Cocks. And the silence is near deafening. I found myself turning the brightness up on my screen, because my eyes hadn’t adjusted yet.

Firearms Surgeon 223 barreled action

223 rem match built by Spartan Rifles.
I'm the second owner (bought it here on the hide years ago), but I never shot it. The original ad is lost due to the site being updated. Previous owner said 250 rounds fired and was a good shooter. Based on my other rifles, I believe it is a DLC finish and not cerakote.

-Surgeon action
-Bartlein barrel, 1/7 twist, not sure of contour (heavier), is fluted and threaded with blend in cap, 17.5" from end of action
-Timney trigger
